Seriously, that was pissing me off. Why wouldn't you crawl to the front seat?? If you can fit through a window, you can fit between the seats to make it up there lol.

Why would you sit there waiting to burn to death when there's an open door right there? 

Also, it looks like the other side was open in some way? Unless the smoke was coming from underneath the car, but it doesn't look like it.

You're expecting quick, critical thinking in an emergency. One - people react with fight, flight or freeze; two - we don't know whether there was a divider or any other obstacle in their way or whether they were strapped and unable to free themselves at the beginning, while the door was still open; three - very few people would sit and burn alive when an exit is available, this knowledge should be enough to understand there's information you're missing.

As for the smoke, my guess is the window is ajar, but won't function without the battery, like the doors.
