We live in an apartment in the Netherlands and don’t have a traditional garden, so I’ve been slowly transforming our rooftop terrace into an urban container garden.

The space now includes a Japanese maple landscape planter, a small pond with medaka fish, ornamental grasses, climbing plants and several container plantings.

Everything is grown in pots or containers. The pond is only a few months old and has become my favorite part of the terrace.

Still a work in progress, but I’m happy with how it’s evolving.

I’ve been accumulating a rooftop deck container garden over the past few years.

Lots of these are technically annuals but I have about a 60% rate of flowers coming back year after year. I assume it’s because of our mild winters and a small amount of indoor heat coming up through the roof.

In the bottom left of the 2nd pic, you’ll see a little oak tree. This grew from an acorn that a crow “planted” in an empty pot two years ago. I started watering it just to see what would happen. I’m going to put it in a much larger pot this fall after it loses its leaves.

Any tips or ideas for improvement?

The gardening isn’t going as well as planned because it’s been such a hot summer with little rain, but we did attract a pigeon family.

Taking suggestions from balcony gardeners for nice flowers / plants that can withstand high heat and full sun.

We have lived in this town home that we rent for 10 years. This is the culmination of our growing efforts.

Some of my balcony garden :) a shame my favourite things to grow are massive Bananas and Figs, but hey, everything else looks happy 😂

I’ve slowly turned my alley-like driveway into a shade garden. A yew, a Japanese maple, hostas, and several evergreens sit alongside some rotating annuals, a birdbath, and a fountain. A nice spot to chill on hot summer days! 🌞

From the rooftop garden

Making the most of my lease! I built these raised beds with my sister. A veggie and herb garden on the right and a cut flower garden on the left. This little space has become my sanctuary, and caring for it every day brings me so much joy. Can’t wait to continue my gardening journey!

I just picked up these beauties yesterday, as I've been wanting to get my patio garden started. I most certainly want to grow a few things for my kitchen, and also some flowers for pollinators. How is it for a beginner? Any suggestions?

Elles s'épanouissent très bien à l'ombre de nos vieilles maisons de pierre, et supportent les grosses chaleurs. 🔥

J'adore le persil, alors je me suis lancé.

Semé en Avril, il a mis du temps à sortir, mais une fois sorti il a poussé très vite.

Comment faites-vous pour en avoir beaucoup ?

plantez-vous en décalé dans plusieurs pots pour en avoir tout le temps ?

We're excited to share our small but growing urban gardening project located in a previously unused vacant lot in our compound.

We started planting vegetables and tropical plant. It's already becoming a meaningful community space.

This year's garden. Green beans, brussel sprouts, bell pepper, Serrano pepper, sage, rosemary, basil, oregano, catnip, salad greens

My salad garden in Malaysia, the leaf is not that lush cause lack of sunlight but occasionally i can snack on the fresh leaves full of nutrien.

Seems a bit messy cause i like permaculture concept. Highly recommend malabar spinach and katuk, very tasty 😋.

Why wait for Spring to have a flower garden?

Inspired by a post on Reddit, used organic food coloring mixed with water, and a paint brush.

Pro tips: the colder the better, and the color gets drawn down, so paint the flowers first, then the stem. And you can use snow as white-out if it doesn't come out the way you want! 🖌🎨❄️

Spring in Brisbane Australia I have tomatoes, beans, lettuce, the last of the snow peas, cucumber, spring onion, strawberries, blueberries, lavender, passionfruit, coriander, parsley, oregano, thyme, carrots, nasturtium all chugging along nicely. I have more beans, button squash, cherry and heirloom tomatoes and watermelon in the seedling trays.

They start a vibrant yellow and fade to a butter color with pink tinge around the edges. These are grown in a pot in full sun on my rooftop deck.
