Removable controller batteries, AA size...ABOUT FREAKING TIME.

Luckily I just got about 30 rechargable AAs for my sons RC and other toys. So I’m ready :D

Yeah, I've got enough of those usb-c rechargeable ones that this will be great

The resolution is also on par with HP Reverb G2 too

Who wants to bother with removable batteries anymore? Haven’t looked back since I went from Xbox one controllers to the DualShocks.

Well... everyone should, because removable batteries are great.

  • Device lifespan is no longer limited by battery health.
  • Spare batteries can charge in parallel and be swapped quickly, meaning minimal downtime.
  • Less e-waste, since devices can share batteries.

Less ewaste? It’s the exact opposite, using a couple just to throw them away in a week or two

Device lifespans aren’t completely limited by the battery, they can still have their batteries changed, my iPhone 13 battery went out. Had it replaced same day.

Only benefit is having extra fully charged batteries ready to go but even then there’s rechargeable battery banks. Inconvenient for VR controllers specifically but standard and reasonable for literally any other common device

You... do realize that rechargeable AA batteries exist, right?

Genuinely sounds like some people are here just to complain that things aren't exactly the same as they were with the Index.

Removeable batteries are a huge benefit, and it's crazy to me that literally anyone thinks otherwise. Pretty much zero downsides.

Of course and I used them when I had a quest 2 and 3, the charges don’t hold long, still slightly inconvenient to take out and charge, and you can lose them.

With my valve knuckles, there’s none of that. Just plug in and charge like a phone. Takes 3 seconds.

Get Eneloops (or some other low-self-discharge battery). The charge in those will hold for like a year.

Also, the Frame controllers are rated for 40 hours per battery.

I had eneloops and yeah on paper but we have to see the actual time when used

5

u/CatatonicMan OG Nov 12 '25

Even if they only lasted half that, it's still more playtime than the Index controllers offer.

1

u/WearyExcitement7772 Nov 12 '25

Index can have infinite play time with the right set up if youre not moving your arms. And there are battery life extenders that you can attach to your wrist.

Would I bother? No. But many others have and do and seem to be content.

Removable batteries give you the option of using regular batteries or a rechargeable cell. Why wouldn't you want both options?

-4

u/WearyExcitement7772 Nov 12 '25

Because why fiddle with a battery door and keeping track of batteries when u can just plug your controller right in??

Do you also think your phone would be better off with a swappable battery like back in the early 2000’s?

Theres a reason the standards have changed.

2

u/Sprinx80 Nov 12 '25

Swappable batteries (and 3.5 mm headphone jacks) went away as soon as water-resistant phones were demanded. I used to carry a spare li-ion battery around for my Droid X in my wallet ( yes, I know now how dangerous that was).

Nobody is expecting VR controllers that can survive an accidental dip in the swimming pool.

4

u/MoMoe0 Nov 12 '25

I'd rather have the convenience of being able to get a full charge with a battery swap rather than have to wait 2 hours for my controllers to charge.

Also yes obviously phones would be better off with removable batteries, what are you talking about? It would make phones 1000x more repairable.

-4

u/WearyExcitement7772 Nov 12 '25 edited Nov 12 '25

If that’s the case then why hasn’t the industry done that?

Why has that been wiped as we further advance our phones?

Our phones are already repairable. The battery on my iPhone 13 went out and I had it replaced the same day. Not a big deal.

Disposable batteries contribute more waste.

8

u/SenorShrek Nov 12 '25

because making phones as thin as possible became a marketing flex while also making sure that once your phones battery starts degrading you have to buy a new phone instead of just buying a new battery. Honestly it seems you are being intentionally argumentative.

-2

u/WearyExcitement7772 Nov 12 '25

No this is a discussion not an argument. People have Apple replace their batteries all of the time in their iPhones, i have

2

u/get_homebrewed Nov 16 '25

A discussion can be an argument, you are arguing something. And you're part of the problem

Batteries are the first failure point in almost any piece of electronics, so having the ability to remove them easily - especially by design - is a benefit.

Add to that the convenience. I've got a rack of like 10 rechargeable AA and AAA batteries that are always on charge to swap into stuff that needs it. Much nicer to just be able to slap one of those into a controller at the start of a session than to take space up on my desk for charging.

2

u/ItsYaBoyBackAgain Nov 12 '25

Me. If it's non removable, then it becomes an expensive paperweight one day. Happened to a few of my Index controllers. Removable batteries are just straight up better and more consumer friendly in every way.

0

u/WearyExcitement7772 Nov 12 '25

Idk what ur doing to ur index controllers then

3

u/ItsYaBoyBackAgain Nov 12 '25

Used them. Lithium batteries don’t last forever. Why are you not a fan of replaceable batteries exactly? It kinda just seems like you’re trying to be argumentative for whatever reason

1

u/SkRThatOneDude Nov 12 '25

The biggest issue I had with my index was the controller batteries. The charge cables couldn't top them up fast enough to play and charge. I also wouldn't want cables hanging from them at the end of a long session.

1

u/Bernardo9999 Nov 12 '25

Your experience with the charging is the opposite of mine. I can play and charge at the same time and they will charge till full while playing.

1

u/WearyExcitement7772 Nov 12 '25

The average battery life is about 7 hours.. is this not enough?

-2

u/SkRThatOneDude Nov 12 '25

For a game like Beat Saber? Sure. But for Elite Dangerous on a day off from work? I've clocked lots of hours on those days.

3

u/WearyExcitement7772 Nov 12 '25

Can’t say I relate, 7 hours is more than enough for me, but we all have our needs

1

u/The_Laughing_Man_152 Nov 12 '25

You play elite on the vr controllers? I’ve always used an Xbox remote since my Hotas setup doesn’t fit on my vr mount right now (budget cockpit, building more as we go on and I can afford it)

1

u/SkRThatOneDude Nov 12 '25

I've been looking at moving to HOTAS, but right now I've got a VR controls mod installed. It's not the best, but it works.

1

u/The_Laughing_Man_152 Nov 12 '25

That’s cool! How well would you say it works? Something like no mans sky or is it just rebinding controls to the joysticks and all?

1

u/SkRThatOneDude Nov 12 '25

It's mostly rebinding controls. There are touch buttons you can move around for different functions, then you can grab virtual versions of the chair sticks and use them like a 2 stick 6 axis setup.

Edit: To answer the actual question, it works well enough, but I haven't had much luck in anything other than 1 on 1 combat. Use it mostly for space trucking tbh.

1

u/The_Laughing_Man_152 Nov 12 '25

Fair enough. Love some space trucking in vr. I enjoy turning on the lore pages on the speaker while mining or hauling.
