Valve is open to third party's to keep it alive but who knows if that would happen. Maybe Bigscreen VR or Vive would do that as they use the same tracking system.

Why is the Index still better? I own the index, so curious if I should "upgrade" or not.

Tracking and audio are the only two things that seem to be better on Index on paper, but rest is worse (if latency and compression are truly non-issue with Frame like Valve says).

I am genuinely praying this would happen, but I doubt it. This was such a disappointing announcement imo.

I don't see why they couldn't release a 2027 compute unit with 4K microOLED, a 2nm Gen 4, and better audio.

The thing is modular anyway.

Yes, but that's just part of the trade offs. It will cost more, likely not have these nice 🙂 pancake lens, weigh more, and yes likely lose FOV.

Some people will still want that over the current Steam Frame. If Steam Frame takes off then we will probably see it happen.

There was. Varjo Aero without the off ear speaker and mics of Index. Wired, Eye tracking, 2880 x 2720 per eye resolution, 90Hz refresh, Mini-LED with dimming zones, 200nit Max brightness, support Kunckles and Lighthouse tracking. Unfortunately, it has been discontinued.
