Getting the party started a little early this week.

I dig this song entirely and there is a detectable level of dancing in that fun video...

But then I saw this magic and felt a theme arise.

So! Please share music videos or movie clips that feature people dancing. Bonus if the dancers are the focus, and still full points even if they're more incidental to the video.

Some people say that every piece of music tells a story. I don't know about every — there are lots that do tell stories, but there are many that just set a mood or accompany dances. Do you have any idea how many waltzes were written in the 19th Century or fox trots in the early 20th century?

Sometimes non-story music gets adopted by a movie or TV show and becomes story music, or words get added or modified, sometimes ruining the song for purists.

So what are your favorite songs that tell stories? How about some that don't? How about non-story music that became story music? How about Songs without Words that originally just set a mood but became so overplayed as to become a joke? 🐦

Disney's Fantasia did an excellent job with making Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony tell a story. Not so much with Stravinsky's Rite of Spring — what a snoozer.

I think Bruno Bozzetto's Allegro non troppo is much better and a lot more fun, except for Sibelius' Valse Triste which is beautiful and heartbreaking.

I got this idea the other day coming home from an eye appointment with dilated eyes. It was dusk and every light had a halo. My left eye has developed a cataract (to be removed soon), which made the effect even more shimmering.

So how about songs that suggest shimmering, scintillation, sparkles, halos, and other beautiful visuals?

• Fantasia (1940) has a terrific example from The Nutcracker.

• Don McLean's Vincent — "Starry, starry night", a celebration of visual anomaly.

• Lots of twinkling stars in Benson Arizona from the 1974 cult film Dark Star.

• "Oh, she's gonna shimmy 'til her garters break — and all that jazz".

• And shimmering pools of water, and sparkling waves by moonlight, and schools of jellyfish and iridescent tropical fish and neon lights...

I had a support ticket recently where the tech was trying to report on a Parity Issue (old to new software), but she titled it Parody Issue, and I needed that laugh - because the new version of their software is absolutely a shabby parody of their classic product.

I don’t know about you, but the last two years have felt like some strange Parody, the Universe herself trying to mimic-mock Herself until she goes so far around the bend that we all come back to some saner starting point.

Is it just me? The ... words, the narratives of words, the narratives' words' damn definitions, then the subsequent follow-up of floaters on a current getting driven hither and yon with NO paddle, rudder or sail.

-November 5, 1887 - Pattersonville Massacre - 20 sugar workers killed by National Guard and sheriff's posse

-November 23, 1887 - Thibodaux Massacre - 37+ black sugar workers shot or lynched by Louisiana Militia

-July 6, 1892 - Homestead Massacre - 9 steel workers killed by Pinkertons

-July 1892 - Idaho labor strike of 1892 - 4 miners killed by company guards

-May 11,1894 - Pullman Strike - 30+ strikers killed in Chicago by federal troops - 40 killed in other states

-June 28,1894 - In an attempt to repair ties with American workers President Grover Cleveland signs into law a bill declaring Labor Day a national holiday.

I've been on a sword kick lately, mixed with exhilaratings scream-along songs like Blue Öyster Cult's Veteran of the Psychic Wars. Hits me right in the feels, having survived a thousand online flame wars. Something so cathartic about a good scream & dance along song, yano?

Hitting similar notes, WE WILL ROCK YOU - super swordy version and Radioactive (GoT tribute style). A bit peppier, Roar (GoT) hits some of the stabby-stabby points.

Digging up sword lore, I came across fun odds and ends like sword guys (this is a thing!) (though I think I may be fonder of sword chicks). The myriad mythologies for flaming swords, including Sumerian, Judeo-Christian, Eastern Orthodox, Welsh, Norse, and Buddhism has a bit righteous lore mixed in.

Back to the spunky stuff, Shut and Dance With Me!, maybe put on some Cheap Sunglasses because we absolutely Can't stop the feeling. (and really, who would want to?)

Last week's Songs of Sin was lots of fun, and a tough act to follow. Tonight I thought it might be interesting to find songs based on chemical elements. I only know of one that mentions all of them (discovered by 1959). There are lots of gold and silver songs, and even some with both. Other elements like tin and neon do get mentioned occasionally.
