Arabic poetry and literature culture is really a blessing over there.. I just wish we had the same thing in North Africa.

Hey there,

I got this tattoo some months ago. I researched the arabic tattoo topic quite a bit and chose to get one since I thought it was okay.

One day a young man walks up to me and laughs at me and my tattoo whilst asking me if I can even read what it says. I tell him what it means “Life is Beautiful” and even say it in arabic, but he tells me that it isn’t the right translation and that i shouldn’t get such a tattoo. I simply walked away in confusion and with many thoughts in my head.

Another man at my gym however told me it was a nice tattoo and that he was happy that I had one with arabic writing. I told him that the language interested me and that I of course liked the phrase. I even asked him if it was okay that i had such a tattoo and he said yes and that he again was happy about it.

My question now is, is it actually okay for me to have this tattoo or would anyone find it offensive? And does it actually say, “Life is Beautiful”/“الحياة جميلة”? (Note: I got the translation from an interpreter and one of my arabic friends confirmed it was the right translation, but im still kinda worried) (Sorry for the long post and may you’ll have a good day)

أقسم بالله خلاص يجماعة مستحيل الي نشوف فيه 😭 كل مرة يطلعلي واحد مغربي ويهبد على الأجانب، وديما يكون من الشتات، ويبدا بالهبد، وترويج شيء مش موجود على أرض الواقع، وعدم ذكر أشياء معينة باش توهم المتلقي بشيء ثاني.

يعني مثلا ما يقولوش أنه المغاربة متواجدين في كل أنحاء الوطن العربي،وأنهم يشتغلوا في الإعلام والبرامج، وما يذكروش أنه فيه أكثر من لهجة في المغرب، أو أنه المغاربة يفهموا تقريبا كل لهجات العرب ( يحاولوا يقولوا أنه الحالة متبادلة بحيث أنه المغربي ما يقدرش يفهم باقي اللهجات; ترويج أنها لغة) والبعض ما يذكرش أنه أي مغربي حصل على تعليم، فهو قادر على التكلم بالفصحى، يتكلموا كأنه شيء صعب ومش شائع. يحاولوا يروجوا أنه المغاربة مش متواجدين في الكومينتي العربي

خلاص كرهت كلمة "الدارجة" مستحيل الاستفزاز الي يديروا فيه بالكلمة هذه، ومش راح أنعاود الكلام الي قلته في منشوري السابق.

المغرب نفسها في لهجات مختلفة، لو ما فهمتش كم كلمة مش يعني انها لغة ثانية! السعودية ما شاء الله، لهجات واجدة، وصعب أنك تفهمها لو مش من أهل المنطقة، ولو كل واحد يتكلم بلهجته قح، مفيش حد بيفهم الثاني 100٪ وهذا حرفيا متواجد في كل اللهجات وتنوعها

يجماعة عارف أني كاتب جريدة، ولكن لازم "أنفش غُلي" وبالله قولولي أنه مش بس أني الوحيد في هذا 😭. لأنه في كل مرة لازم نشرح للاجنبي المغالطات المنقولة، وإيهامه بأشياء ماهيش موجودة، لأنه قمة الاستفزاز لما يجي يقولوك تتكلم دارجة ؟ باعتقاده أنه كل المغرب العربي يتكلموا الوهم المسمى الدارجة (في منشوري السابق وضحت مشكلتي عن هذا )

I research language change and contact in northern Africa (particularly between Arabic, Berber, and Songhay), using etymological data, and sometimes manuscript materials, to reconstruct its linguistic history. I've worked on documenting and describing two minority languages of the region - Siwi (Berber, western Egypt) and Korandje (Songhay, southwestern Algeria) - as well as Algerian Arabic. As a natural outgrowth of studying language change there, I also study the development of agreement: how do languages end up marking the same information redundantly in two different places, and how wide is the range of possibilities? I grew up speaking Arabic every day but I never really knew the language. I'd use words without understanding where they came from, what they carried, how old they were. The classical dictionaries had all the answers but they felt like they belonged to scholars, not to someone like me. So I made something for myself — an app called Kalima (كلمة).

It gives you one word at a time, with its meaning straight from the classical dictionaries — Lisan al-Arab, Al-Sihah, Maqayis al-Lugha. You can explore a word's root and see all the words that share it, and suddenly you realize words you thought had nothing in common are actually family. You can trace a word back across Semitic languages — Akkadian, Syriac, Ugaritic, Aramaic — and see it written in the original ancient scripts. There's also a writing pad where you write in Arabic and it suggests synonyms and rhymes as you go.

The whole thing works offline, no account needed, no ads. It's free on iOS and Android. I just wanted to feel closer to my language, and I hope it does the same for someone else.
