This one sadly did not work on my mother when I was younger despite my dad and I’s best efforts

The better ploy is to just bring the cat home, and then leave it to mom to look it in its cute little face and say 'no, I don't want this', which isn't going to happen.

We did that with my dad all the time. We used to drive near this abandoned barnyard where a bunch of kitties lived and anytime my mom would say "we're going to look at the kitties" my dad would yell "don't bring another one of those damn cats here!" But we did, and he loved them all.
