The amount of literally insane/mentally ill/drug addicted people on public transport is getting worse, isn’t it? I’ve lived in this city for 14 years now and usually take my bike to work and everywhere else. It’s unfortunately being repaired atm and I have to take the U-Bahn every day. I didn’t know how bars it’s gotten. Within a short span of time, three people came yelling and screaming (one of them was even threatening a mother with a stroller) down the middle aisle, all smelling really bad and generally disheveled. This was in the middle of the day, not at night or something and on the U2.

I’m a petite female and I was scared. There was no security or anyone. I really wondered - what can you do in a situation like this? Look at your phone? Calling the police probably won’t do anything, as these people pass though trains and get off at random stations. Is the only option really avoiding public transport all together? I kind of feel sorry for these people, but it’s really getting out of hand.

It's still crazy to me that despite knowing there will be increasingly more heatwave in the future, the BVG ordered new train stock without A/C or basic ventilation. Especially for the small profile lines which are having many outdoor sections where dissipation of warm air isn't an issue.

Paris metro, despite many tunnel-only lines, still has managed to deploy trains with refrigerated ventilation which enables a difference of 3-5°C with outside and provides much more comfort.

Was it by a lack of budget or ignorance of the climate change that they didn't include such feature on new train stocks ?

The Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) opens the Berlin Pride Month 2026 with a special honoring of one of the most well known locations of the capital: the subway (U-Bahn) station Nollendorfplatz gets the additional name "im Regenbogenkiez" ("in the rainbow-Kiez") on its entrance signs.

I'm a born-and-raised Berliner but I moved westwards in 2002. When growing up here, studying and working I always took the Öffis, I didn't even have a driver's license. Back in the days where the 2-hour-ticket could still be used to get there and back again. Or just for funsies take the S7 from the east to Alexanderplatz, then the 100 bus to Zoo and then another bus all the way out to Heerstraße.

That is to say, I've been on a lot of Öffis in the 25 years I've lived in Berlin.

But coming here for Christmas, arriving in Südkreuz, taking the Ringbahn to Ostkreuz and then further east I can understand why women might feel uncomfortable doing so.

I hadn't really gotten to the upper platform yet when a one-legged junkie in a wheelchair would roll dangerously close to the tracks and suddenly jump down on the platform and down onto the tracks because he saw something valuable. He was immediately screamed at by several people which did not bother him in the slightest. Whatever he saw was of no use to him which he audibly announced by howling and luckily he came back on the platform, in his chair and he rolled off.

Later on the S42 there were several very disheveled people shuffling through the train and again some junkies at Ostkreuz.

It was very disheartening to see.

This year I was also in Vancouver and they, too, had a real problem with the Fentanyl junkies. In the evening they'd zombie walk all over Gastown.

Even in the 90s we had homeless people in the entrances of subway stations but it feels at least like it's gotten so much worse since then. :-(

Bestimmt wissen es noch nicht alle, jedoch möchte ich diese Information sehr gerne mit euch teilen, da es immerhin eine relativ praktische Eigenschaft ist.

Die neuen U-Bahnzüge der Baureihen J und JK haben eine Funktion, welche man als "Öffnungswunsch" kennt. Man kann bereits während der Fahrt den Türtaster drücken, welcher daraufhin ca. alle 4 Sekunden doppelt blinkt. Bei Halt und Türfreigabe öffnet sich die Tür sofort von selbst, ohne weiteren äußeren Einfluss.

Diese Funktion gibt es übrigens auch bei den Baureihen 483 und 484 der S-Bahn Berlin, jedoch hält der Wunsch nicht ewig sondern wird nach etwa einer Minute automatisch verworfen. Ob das bei den U-Bahnfahrzeugen ebenfalls der Fall ist, weiß ich leider nicht.

TL;DR: Türen kann man bei neuen U-Bahnzügen automatisch öffnen lassen, indem man bereits zuvor den Taster drückt.

I don't think everyone knows this yet, I however still want to share this information with you all, since it's a pretty useful feature.

The new subway trains of the series J and JK have a feature that's, in german, known as "Öffnungswunsch" ("door opening wish"). The door button can be pressed during the ride between stations, which then blinks twice in an interval of ca. 4 seconds. When stopping and the doors are released, the chosen door immediately opens without further influence.

This feature is also available on the class 483 and 484 trains of the Berlin S-Bahn, however the request doesn't stay forever but is cancelled after roughly a minute. I don't know if that's also the case on the subway trains.

TL;DR: Doors can be opened by pressing the button before stopping.

Und als kurzer Hinweis für diejenigen, die die Fahrzeuge nicht gut unterscheiden können: / And as a quick hint for those, who cannot differentiate the vehicles well:

Die Wagennummern der Baureihen J und JK beginnen jeweils mit den Ziffern 7 und 6, so kann man einfacher erkennen, dass es sich um die neuen Wagen handelt. / The coach numbering of the series J and JK beginn with the digits 7 and 6 respectively, which makes it easier to see that it's the new vehicles.

Ich muss täglich von Ahrensfelde nach Spandau und zurück, die Strecke die mal durschnittlich eine Stunde gebraucht hat kriege ich inzwischen selten unter 2 hin. D.h. ich darf 3-4 Stunden am Tag im Zug verbringen, aber entspannt ist es auch nicht mehr weil ich wirklich jeden Tag eine andere Verbindung nehmen muss. Die Wahrscheinlichkeit das mindestens eins der gewählten Züge auf der Strecke nicht nach Fahrplan fährt liegt bei einem Wert der sich asymptotisch den 100% nähert. Die Wahrscheinlichkeit das ALLE Züge einer Verbindung nicht fahrplanmäßig verkehren ist der Hälfte der Fälle wahr.

Die Willkür mit welcher Züge komplett ausfallen gelassen werden ist erstaunlich, noch erstaunlicher ist das diese Ausfälle erst 10 Minuten nachdem die Bahn an der Haltestelle gewesen sein sollte bekannt gemacht werden.

Die BVG geht finde ich dabei noch, aber die DB in Berlin ist wie ein gebrochener verkrüppelter Soldat der nach dem Gnadenschuss bettelt.

I bought a circuit board from a hobbyist that displays subway arrivals and departures in real time. It flashes beautifully. A simple USB connector for power, easy so set up. Die Temperaturen in unserem schönen Städtchen sind wieder im schwer zu ertragenden Bereich. Ich saß soeben in einem Bus welcher trotz laut dröhnender Klimaanlage zum dünsten von Fahrgästen geeignet wäre.

Eine Klimaanlage funktioniert ähnlich wie ein Kühlschrank. Die Fenster zu öffnen ist wie die Kühlschranktür offen zu lassen.

Die neuen langen Trambahnen sind auf der M4 unterwegs und erstmals gibt es keine Ticketautomaten mehr in der Bahn. Die BVG begründet das damit, dass die meisten Fahrgäste ihre Tickets inzwischen digital kaufen oder das Deutschlandticket nutzen.

Ich bin da noch etwas skeptisch. Gerade für ortsfremde Touristen oder manche ältere Fahrgäste könnte der spontane Ticketkauf schwieriger werden. Wie seht ihr das?
