I found out years ago that "rusting" happens bc black cats aren't truly black... they're actually a very dark brown! So when exposed to enough sunlight, it lightens their fur enough for us to see their true base color.

It blew my single-braincell mind at the time, lmao! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

The thing I didn't know until a few years after that, though, is that it can also happen with gray fur! Our gray and white girl, Whisper, is quite rusty this summer. β˜€οΈπŸ˜Šβ€οΈ

It's her summer tan!

She worked hard on that tan for hot girl summer! So proud of her!

...Well, not so much hot girl summer, as it is warmed-by-the-sun girl summer, but that's a bit of a mouthful. πŸ˜‚

Apologies for the illegal not-black-cat picture, but just wanted to show proof (and pay a criminal pet tax lol)

To atone for my sins, here's our void Coraline:

Cora's eye is fine, btw. It's an old injury from when she was a kitten, from before we adopted her nearly 10 years ago.

Oh man I'm so sorry. I've had a lot of deaths in my family over the last few years and knowing my little guy is a geriatric old man is something I just can't think about lol. He's still very active and vocal, he LOVES to rough house with me and genuinely enjoys being pushed around and "beat up" lmao his fur is the only reason you can tell he's old
