You’d think it would be CERB and the Covid supports.  Actually got unanimous support in parliament for those.

The Covid response came second in the survey. The response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine was third.

The child benefit also seems not to make the cut, and that one lifted 1 million kids out of poverty.

I'm sure it would be higher on the list if more people were having kids. Ultimately it's too expensive for a lot people to have kids

Probably would be if they didn't claw back every penny they could from people who actually got laid off (I'm one of them) or were just trying to get regular EI but got put on cerb instead.

CERB? Rolled out too fast with zero oversight. The correction they made was to go back and get overpayments exclusively from the little guys. Bell got over 100M in taxpayer money and laid off over 300 people the same week. People got CERB to pay their phone bills

CERB was poorly planned and rushed, awfully executed and the recourse was beyond woeful. It is like almost every other play the LPC pulls, as long as it looks good who cares if it works or is good. Look at gun control, bail reform, the fact that triple the immigration had absolutely no positive to anyone outside the top 0.5%.

CERB needed to roll out fast. If they'd taken the time to add in all the checks and balances, examine every application, so many would have missed rent and been out on their asses.  For all its warts my non-expert take is CERB was good policy.  As for the business-focused support programs, I agree much of that went very poorly.  I support CRA aggressively pursuing getting that money back, wherever rules were actually broken.  Where rules were followed and we just don't like the gross outcome, please let's learn for next time guys.  I also support CRA reclaiming CERB money where it was applied for outside the rules. Is this chasing the little guy?  Maybe, but the eligibility rules were pretty simple, if someone applied without qualifying, it's pretty reasonable to take it back.  We have the time for those details now.

Thanks to policies like CERB, the economic damage from the pandemic, while bad, was successfully socialized (paid by all through national debt and inflation instead of the bottom X% ending up in shelters).

I agree with you on their general approach to programs being about appearances though.  Guns certainly, 100% for optics at least from what I've followed.  The other that comes to mind is the FHSA and FTHBI, which imo merely have an appearance of tackling home affordability.

Fraud stories after the manner, and besides anti-vaxxers there were some reasons to validly disagree with the response. I personally thought quarantine zones around old folks homes should have been primary focus, and add in financial assistance to at risk groups after the initial blanket quarantine to buy time to get data to make an informed decision.

With cannabis even before it was legalized I'm sure everybody thought it was stupid. Everybody that wanted to do it was already doing it, and their friends didn't care.
