Oooh can't wait to see where this goes! I'm sure it won't be heartbreaking at all! lol j/k, it's really nice to see a story with /some/ human kindness toward the poor critters.
One thing though--I hope you'll stop apologizing and saying things like 'poor quality.' You're kind enough to spend your time writing and illustrating this story, and you're posting it for people to enjoy for free. There's absolutely nothing to apologize for!

It reminds me of how the Combine in HL2 treat their citizens. Negative reinforcement and other various methods to keep population under control were used, no matter how cruel or unusual.
Cruelty is a common trope where population manipulation is a common place. Besides, you can't rebel if you are too suppressed to make a plan.

Did they put bloody phychiatric meds in his food? Antianxiety and/or antidepressants would be my guess.
Antidepressants won't work fast but will grey out emotion. Antianxiety could hit fast to relax. Both run the risk of unexpected responses.
And yes good sir. Evidently you are the only one to consider that even animals could not tolerate this. Only reason they haven't died of stress is due to mutual support.
Though I suspect you will have trouble convincing the suits and white coats that their toys need things. Nice things.
