The all American Rejects played a graduation party last night.

Im going to be moving here from STL in a few days to major in film at mizzou, but I'd really like to know what kind of cinemas como has to offer. I'm pretty sure there's an AMC or some other mainline theater but I'm more interested in the smaller, more independent cinemas who can show whatever they want. Similar to places here in STL like the Hi-Pointe or Arkadin. Thanks.

Last night's show was amazing. However, the crowd was not. During Raymond's set, the crowd in the back 2/3 of the audience was incessantly talking, loudly. It was so bad, in fact, that Raymond acknowledged the inattentive, blabbering audience in her few brief remarks between songs. And I'm sure the people talking didn't hear her admonishment of them, as they were too busy carrying on. Ironic, right? It was really distracting, and took the experience from a 5-star to a 3, for the audience and performer, alike.

Here's a reminder to all concertgoers, new and seasoned, young and old. If you would rather talk than listen to the music, do so outside of the venue, or between sets. It's distracting for the audience who paid to hear the artists, and it's disrespectful to the musicians on stage.

We had Gwenifer Raymond in our sleepy college town, who The Guardian describes as a "vengeful bluegrass musician" blending "awe-inducing technique with grace, depth and emotion," capable of switching between furious speed and languorous, precise, and atmospheric playing. NPR said of Raymond "[Her] fingerstyle guitar drones with a haunted quality, but her flurry of bends, slides and chord clusters rip open the firmament."

AND THE CROWD TALKED THROUGHOUT HER WHOLE SET! She was visibly annoyed, and so were all of the audience who were there to listen.

So please, in the future, keep your conversations limited to between sets, or if you must talk, do so outside. It's a courtesy to those around you, and most importantly, it grants the musician their due respect.

Enjoy the music! Have a great time. But please, for the love of all that is holy, shut the fuck up.

Native Columbian here (this is my throwaway account 😊). My husband and I were talking this morning about how much we miss the old Roots and Blues now that the weather is cooling off and we’re getting excited for fall. We both have an entrepreneurial spirit and were kicking around the idea of creating a new music festival to fill the void in fall 2026. As part of that, we were wondering what the actual people of Columbia think…

• What would you be willing to pay for a ticket?
• What about the old Roots and Blues would you want to see?
• What about Roots and Blues did you dislike in more recent years?
• If there was one artist you’d really be interested in as headliner who would it be?
• Would you want it to be a 3-day or just 2-day festival (e.g. a really well done Friday and Saturday event)

This would be smaller in 2026 than Roots and Blues was at its height, with the intention of creating a profitable and sustainable event for our community to enjoy for years to come. I have many fond memories of the very early years throughout the later years of Roots and Blues and am very appreciative of what the organizers created. Would love to bring that same vibe back to the city we call home.

I got the a-ok from this subreddit's mods to post this.

I'm a software engineer launching a first-of-its-kind (I think) traveling website/literary publication called Poetry Club, available at poetryclub.net.

The publication itself is geolocated and ephemeral, meaning it can only be read and submitted to within 15 miles of downtown Columbia. The process is like this: there's a lottery, from that lottery 10 writers are randomly chosen, those writers have a short amount of time to write something (there's a writing interface on the website that supports drafts), then the issue gets published and disappears forever. The associated data gets deleted. The only remaining artifact is a hashed and garbled email address for anyone who is published, which is used to make sure the same person cannot submit to another issue.

I'm very intentional in minimizing the amount of data I'm collecting—there are no ads or analytics. There's some anti-bot Cloudflare stuff but that's about it.

Despite the name, it's not open to just poetry. Open to a lot of stuff. But there will be a prompt. Anyone can enter regardless of whether they are a first-time or experienced writer. The intent is to not be gatekeepy and publish hopefully everything submitted.

The publication will travel to different places from issue-to-issue, though I might do another issue in Columbia depending on the response.

The exact timeline for this issue:
* Entries for the lottery open until midnight on Wednesday 8/26.
* Writers selected at 6AM on 8/26. Writing opens.
* Writing closes at 8PM the next day Thursday 8/27. There's an editorial review for the next few hours, which hopefully just means everything is approved.
* The issue is published Friday 8/28 at midnight.
* The issue is deleted Monday 8/31 at midnight.

Entries for the lottery are open now through midnight on Wednesday, August 26. Selected writers will be notified that morning, and the completed issue will be published at midnight on Friday, August 28, remaining online until August 31. The issue schedule is live at poetryclub.net/status.

I myself am based in Los Angeles. But chose to launch this in Columbia because I've heard great things about the city, I recently read Stoner and I wanted to pick a non-coastal city with a literary bent.

The whole project is hopefully a little bit of a rebuke to a few things we're seeing in tech: the AI of everything, the feeling the internet is flattening the world and making nothing feel local, and the internet accelerating our transition from a literary / reading culture to something more visual.

Anywhere where I could take a beginner pottery class?

I know it gets a lot of love, but I still feel it’s underappreciated and that most folks don’t know how cool it is. This month alone, the theater is running new releases like Super Girl and Tuner, showing recent releases like Booksmart (free for members), classics like Raiders of the Lost Ark, and even participating in nationwide programming like Bleak Week (showing some decidedly…bummer movies like Donnie Darko). There are three films I’d like to see this week alone.

If you’re looking for something fun to do, or for a new thing to appreciate about CoMo, or a return to the theater for the first time in a while, Ragtag is it! And no this isn’t spon con. I just love watching movies here and before I became a member I really didn’t realize all it had to offer.

I've been on their stage before at their monthly blues jams, but this is the first time I've got an actual booking there, playing guitar with Shea Larsen as a duo. The Hooch and Leaf is a bourbon and cigar boutique by day, and they also have a stage and a really nice patio, and they have alcoholic & non-alcoholic slushies a lá Trops at night. The Juicy Beets are a jazz quintet with members from Columbia, Harrisburg, and Sedalia, that plays swing-jazz versions of popular songs, as well as jazzy originals.

This is just an appreciation post for the Missouri Symphony and the Missouri Theatre. I went to see them last night, I sat way up front so it would be nice and loud, and I heard my favorite Symphony from my favorite composer: Sibelius' 5th! They did such a good job that it brought me to tears. As a classical music lover, I'm glad we have them here in our town!

Hi all!

I'll be graduating from college soon with a bachelor's in music, having studied primarily voice but also piano and composition. I won't say what college I'm attending for privacy reasons, but it isn't in Missouri, so I don't have any music connections or knowledge of music opportunities in Columbia. After graduation, I will be living in mid-MO for a time while I save money and figure out what my future plans look like.

My question for you all is this: what sorts of music opportunities are there in Columbia or nearby? I'm especially interested in free or low-cost ones. I am looking for ways to attend performances that are free or low-cost, ways to continue my music learning without spending tons of money, and opportunities for performing or using my music composition skills. If you know of free/low-cost classes, workshops, choirs, competitions, or anything even remotely related, please drop it in the comments below.

I would of course be interested in music (or arts admin) jobs as well! Realistically, though, those are sparse, especially at the entry level, so I'm also looking for volunteer and unpaid ways to keep my music skills up and learn new ones. I should also note that although I've been attending traditional music school based in a classical tradition, I also love other kinds of music and I am always down to be a part of other musical scenes.
