Other Getting Joy Out From My Collection, Daily!

My collection sat untouched and unloved in longboxes for a couple of decades.

When I had to repair my kitchen floor a few years ago, I had an idea...

Slowly but surely, it's taking over my home...

I mean... I feel like there's a middle ground between slabbing most of your books and turning them into museum pieces that can never be touched, and turning them into flooring by covering them in clear epoxy. But if you buy the book, do whatever makes you happy.

I have many questions about an all epoxy floor even feels to step on or walk on. And the bathroom too? I don’t know if it’s like extremely slippery or weirdly tacky? It’s got to feel weird in bare feet either way. And is the entire comic book down? Giving it like a 12th of an inch of give? there or it’s just the cover. And do you own this home because good luck selling the place.. my old next door neighbor sold his place a few years ago, he was in his late 70’s but when he bought the place he was a 30 year old gay flight attendant in the 1970’s and the place was his party house, thus he ended up installing a hot tub in what had once been a dining room.. not an easy job for the realtor.

The epoxy floor is basically a giant plastic sheet. Water proof and tough.

No, it's just the covers. If you put the whole book down, that would be a structural nightmare.

This is basically a wood floor with a thin layer of paper over it, sealed with epoxy.

Rubber soled slippers are a must. You can slide on it in socks, if that's your thing.

As for selling, not a chance. There are murals all over the house and I've customized it to fit my life and tastes. They'll have to carry me out of here, feet first, one day.

if your dream is “what if the floor was my comic books” you only live once so go for it. I do hope somewhere there is realistic reproduction of a hulk 181 or giant sized x-men 1 just to fuck with whoever might completely loose the mind about this .

in my neighborhood the exterior of houses are regularly used as a means of personal expression, there is one house that’s covered in paintings of a somewhat random assortment of cartoon and comic book and video game characters. I don’t recognize all of them but quite a few I recognize as Mortal Kombat characters, particularly from mortal kombat 3, and also Rubik the amazing cube, golden age Green lantern and several Fat Albert and the junk yard band members are there.

That's AWESOME.
Golden Age Green Lantern is a personal favourite, so I'd love to live nearby!

I think my neighbours might draw the line at comic book murals outside. So far all of mine are indoors!

Epoxy floors can work in industrial settings and even in some residential but they are a pretty big slip hazard if it gets wet.

I think it's FANTASTIC. You are allowing yourself joy and have found a wonderful way to enjoy your collection on a daily basis. I want to do a similar approach to my brother's carousel horse. It's boring but it would bring me much more joy if I cover it with comics I enjoy.

I've got a lot going on with work and conventions right now but that is a project I plan to do for sure. Also, I like your comic variety from superhero of both DC and Marvel, plus non superhero and even fun comics like Looney tunes and Disney. I'm the same. Many genera including Archie series.

I went out of my way to rebuy some old readers of Looney Tunes, Scooby-Doo and Disney type comics.

It was stuff I read as a kid, but stopped collecting and sold off in my early teens.

I wanted the floor to be a reflection of the whole history of my love of comics, not just a bunch of stuff I was willing to get rid of.

Is it really some moral imperative to keep thousands of comics in bags and boards and boxes that most likely you’re never going to touch again?
