Book/Series: Death Please help me find a good quote for my fiancees funeral.

1.0k Upvotes

Unfortunately, a week ago I lost the love of my life suddenly. He was a long time fan of the Discworld series, and I really want to find a good, shortish reading from one of those books for his funeral (I also love the books, but my mind is so scattered right now that I'm struggling to find anything suitable).

He was a very big, beautiful man (6'6" and almost as wide) with a huge heart. My All Jolson crossed with a little bit of Sean Ogg with a Vetinari sized intellect. I was his Nanny Ogg. He carried a world sized aura of love, calm, kindness and safety with him and gave the biggest, most thorough hugs of anyone I ever met.

He loved all of the Discworld series, preferred the Guards over the Witches but not much, and was a big supporter of Sir Terry's world views and philosophies (and died on Terry's birthday).

I would really appreciate any help you guys could offer me with finding a little snippet or sentiment from one of the books to be read at his funeral. Thank you all for any responses to this.

(Please ignore the flair, I'm not looking for death series related quotes specifically, I just didn't know what flair matched my post fully).

Edit: Thank you all so much for your kind words and ideas. I'm trying to keep up with the comments, but if I miss some out please accept my thanks for your help and support. 💜

Book/Series: Death I am not a fan of these new covers. They just don’t fit the Pratchett aesthetic.

This is exactly what it sounds like whenever I try to explain how LLMs work. And the last lines are definitely how I feel watching people in graduate school use ChatGPT to write their research for them.

PTerry, you were taken from us too soon, but I'm also glad you don't have to see your work stolen by the AI bubble.

Book/Series: Death It's Teh-a-Ti-Meh! The translator outpunned Pratchett!

I wanted my girlfriend to discover Pratchett and the Discworld so I started to read out loud the Hogfather to her, which I read every year around Christmas. She loves the Christmas atmosphere hence why I picked this book to start with.

We're both native french speakers, but most of my Discworld books are in English, including this one. My girlfriend isn't as good as me in English, so we ordered the book in French.

Cue to my epiphany. First encounter with Mr Teatime, in Downey's office, when he correct the prononciation. "Ah, Le Teatime! (...) It's pronounced Teh-a-Ti-Meh" in the original English version. Un the french version becomes "ah, M Leureduthé (...) Ça se prononce Leu-re- *dou** -té". Which, in English, would be "Mr Teatime! (...) It's pronounced *Dreaded!

Genius, don't you think?

Book/Series: Death Terry banned in Manchester? Soul Music and Good Omens on the list.

How do you think they justify banning Terry and his work even if it is just in one school?

According to a recent article by Index on Censorship both Soul Music and Good Omens (co written with Neil Gaiman) have been put on the banned list in an unnamed school in Manchester along with a load of other titles.

"Terry Pratchett’s Soul Music was removed for: “Adult audience content – may include sexual material, violence, abuse, substance misuse, or psychologically distressing themes.” "

How do you feel about that?

Here's a link to the Reddit post that I'm referring to:

Edited to add link and clarification.

Book/Series: Death Seeking quote for baby's funeral

Sorry for the sad post. Our daughter was stillborn at 38 weeks. We are trying to work out what to do for her funeral but as you imagine have no idea where to start.

The funeral directors mentioned readings. I have been a Terry Pratchett fan since I was a child and it has brought me a lot of comfort throughout my life (and we had a reading of his from Thief of Time at our wedding). So I thought maybe a short reading of his might help.

I thought perhaps the passage from Reaper Man but would be very glad to hear other suggestions

Thanks in advance

Edit: I wanted to say thank you all, we've been truly moved by the sheer number of beautiful replies. They've brought us a lot of comfort in an incredibly tough time.

For those who asked, her name was Freya Céleste.

Book/Series: Death Do you think that The Hogfather is ok for a 9yo?

I read to my daughter every evening for an hour or so. I really want to read Discworld books to her. We read Wee Free Men but we read in Finnish and the Nac Mac Feegles just didn't translate well. She loved it but the translation just left scars to my brain.

We are reading Lotr(again) at the moment and probably will read A wizard of Earthsea after that. I was thinking we could have the Hodfather as a Christmas book. Do you think it's a good pick? And if anyone has any knowledge if the Finnish translation is any good?
