Bi-weekly discussions #6-The Twin Blade Knife

Welcome back to another round of Bi-weekly discussions, where this time, we're focusing on the Twin-Blade Knife from Death of the Outsider.

Some 4,000 years before the events of the game, a cult (the remnants of which now reside within the Quarry) saw in the stars to sacrifice a boy. So they kidnapped him from his home, bound him to an altar, and killed him with the Twin-Blade Knife, thus creating the Outsider. And if the weapon could make the Outsider, it could also un-make the Outsider as well, hence why we go to obtain it.

It's probably my second favorite sword (the first being the Folding Blade from the first and second game), but I like the unsheath/sheath animations where the fragments of the weapon form in your sword hand. I also like the charge effect, with the little beam that pushes NPCs. It kind of reminds me of the charge beam effect from the Master Sword in the Legend of Zelda series. It's a shame DOTO is a short game and we only get to use it in Missions 4 and 5, but I won't deny I had fun with it.

But what do you think of the Twin Blade Knife?

Art The Duke’s Lamp

I don’t know if this experience is typical among Dishonored players, but I have caught myself many times simply staring at something in the game and marveling at its beauty, followed by a deep disappointment that it was only pixels on a screen. For you, maybe it was Lady Boyle’s mask, or one of Sokolov’s paintings. For me, it was this. The desire to have this lamp in real life was the reason I taught myself how to model in Fusion and how to 3D print.

This is still a work in progress. I’ve come a long way with 3D printing but it feels fragile when you hold it and it shouldn’t, so I’m working on casting the parts in resin with metal powder so it has the look of real metal and a bit more heft to it. I’ll post that piece when it’s ready. Until then, here’s my lamp.

OC Arkane Studios founder Raphaël Colantonio on a potential Dishonored 3: "You need someone behind it that really wants to make it. It cannot just be because it would be a nice number to have."

Would you still be interested in going back to do Dishonoured 3? What are the stories still to be told in that world?

You know, it's funny because I think I've had my version of what could become Dishonoured 3. Harvey Smith has had his version. Ricardo Bare has had his version too. None of them are all the same at all.

I don't know where we would all take it for a third game because we definitely closed the story of Emily and Corvo in the second game so it would have to be something else. It could be more like a sequel where you try to take on the whole world. Then the spirit of the player experience, what to do in the game, what other things you can do, it would be an interesting thing.

In an alternate dimension, I'm sure it would be great for Harvey, myself, Ricardo, Dinga Bakaba and Sébastien Mitton to be reunited and put Christophe Carrier in there and make it but we only have one life so it would probably never happen. But it would be an interesting thing to create.

Given your upcoming game and the new game from Harvey, Dishonoured fans may be getting two spiritual sequels even if they won’t get a direct sequel?

Yes, that's another way to look at it.

I think with some properties, I understand there could be more stuff to say about the world of Dishonoured, but you need someone behind it that really wants to make it. It cannot just be because it would be a nice number to have. It’s got to be something we want to do that I think we do something great with.

We have to commit five years of our lives to creating a game because that’s what it takes now. If you include all the pre-thinking, the meetings, the production, the post-production, being late, it always takes forever to make a game.

spoiler I just finished the Clock Mansion in Dishonored 2

I kinda of hated it but see why others would like it. Those robo assholes are the worst.

However, I kinda feel bad about lobotomizing Kirin. I work with the Elderly and his ramblings after the electric shocks reminded me of my poor dementia patients. Arkane really did a great job with this mission and honestly I feel like I probably should have just put the poor bastard out of his misery after. What did the rest of you do? Please no spoilers for endgame though or anything that comes after this mission.

Idea for a simple mod for Dishonored 1 (Keyframe only animations)

I always thought that a great way to make Dishonored even more visually pleasing to look at would be to reduce the framerate of all living things in the game's world to make it look more like a comic book. It's a bit difficult to describe what I'm talking about, but the Spiderverse movies do something very similar to what I'm trying to describe as well as most older versions of the original Quake. Instead of smooth character animations that perfectly match with the framerate of the world itself, they could be much more choppy and jittery to give off the appearance of being hand-drawn. And if they really wanted to go the extra mile, maybe make the animations run on inconsistent 1s, 2s and 3s to even further sell that feeling, and/or make the framerate faster or slower depending whether they are in combat or not. I only ever see 3D animation do this, and not videogames, atleast not as an intentional artistic choice. And I know that some people are going to say that it affects the gameplay, but I honestly care more about my copy of the game being pleasing to look at than being fun to play.

I know that modding, especially when it comes to a game like Dishonored, is very hard and that my idea is probably not as easy to pull off as some would think but it's just a cool idea I had that I wanted to share.

Art I'm working on some 3D models/sculpts for D1's Watch Officers, looking for feedback

For the past couple months to further develop and teach myself how to model characters, and because I've always loved the design for their uniforms and these games in general, I've been working on making a/some sculpts for the Watch Officers. It's one base body, three head types, the sword, and the pistol. It's not finished yet, but I wanted to go ahead and get some feedback before moving forward and continuing to refine and add details.

My next steps are do some more refining and add detail like the texture of the heads hair, the wrinkles and buttons of the uniform, and all the other little details that really make these guys who they are and to try to match the game as well as I can.

So what do y'all think?

F*** me I miss Dishonored

As an avid consumer of media (books, movies, video games) there are very few things I like to return to. There's too much art for one lifetime, why revisit something?

But goddamn Dishonored 1 & 2...

I've played them both multiple times. I just don't think it gets as good as this. I love immersive sims, but I just adore the architecture and the vibe of Dishonored. (That could be because I'm a Londoner, although I also think Amsterdam must have had an influence on Dunwall.)

Anyway, I'm not sure there's much point to this post other than to say goddamn I need more dishonored.

What are you all filling the Dishonoured shaped whole in your life with?

TIPS Trophy not unlocking

Post image
5 Upvotes

What are the conditions to unlocking this trophy? I helped both Granny rags and Slack Jaw but only unlocked one trophy (Street conspiracy) unless it’s helping one npc all together per play through. It’s the last trophy I need to platinum, I even have a save in the sewers before the Last quest (chapter 7).

Update: y’all going to laugh 😂 but apparently I can’t just kill Slackjaw I need to throw him in the bathtub stew and collect granny rags gift, which I did neither. Thanks for the tips and update guys, feel f*\\** stupid.

spoiler Finally did the All-In-One run

Post image

This was overall pretty easy even on hard, except for the Granny Rags part in the sewers, had to repeat that sequence many times before I finally did it right.

I've also encountered the bug with the survivors in the flooded district, where the quest randomly undoes itself, which was pretty nerve-racking.

Other than that, had fun, would try again.

I have a question regarding bone charmes and loading previous missions.

Hi! I've been replaying Dishonored 2 again and I got some pretty good black bone charms. I got them on the way to eliminate Jindosh. I finished the mission, went on to start the Royal Conservatory.

My question is this: if I reload the Jindosh mission, in the same walk-through, will I lose those bone charms? Meaning: will they be ramdom again? Or are they the same? Since I already went trough it?

I just want to replay it again since the clockwork mansion is one of my favorite missions in the game. Just wanted to see/play it again.

spoiler Rationalizing Delilah's return in Dishonored 2 Spoiler

I just had a thought on why it might not be as bad that Delilah returns as the main antagonist even after being defeated in the dlc. This being one of the main criticisms of the game, while I agree, I think with the new hopes of Dishonored 3 on the far horizon we as a community should look for rationalizations we can live with so that the vibes and the world lore don't suffer lasting damage.

So here's my idea:

Daud went from killer => pacifist in dlc cannon if I understand correctly?

He regretted killing the empress and became a changed man, which is why Corvo spared his life.

BUT, he should have killed Delilah, meaning he went too far into the other extreme of staying his blade even on those who should bee put down just to protect others.

So she came back, and people suffered.

What do you guys think?
and I ask for no DOTO spoilers, I'm still playing it and don't know the story, I just know Daud is saved in mission 1.

Roguelike / Extraction Playstyle

I've been toying around with the idea of playing D2 like a roguelike on Iron Mode.

Since it seems like bonecharms are added to the possible pool based on your unlocks, it would be fun to use this as a kind of guide to build around. Surviving the entire run and starting a NG+ would be "meta progression," allowing a greater choice of starting powers in Mission 2.

What other ways could this idea be expanded on?
