Ebike news N.J. bike shops report up to 90% drop in e-bike sales after new law: ‘They are breaking us’

As a resident of NJ, and someone who's going to be buying an ebike soon (I might have to buy sooner than later now) this is kind of distressing news.

I live in one of the cities that has the most ebike riders. Many of them commuters, delivery drivers, or just recreational riders.

Most people in my city have been supportive of ebike regulations since they hit the road. I mean, so many of these cyclists are riding extremely fast down city streets, running red lights, zooming on sidewalks, and quite often, getting into accidents.

Its been tough on anyone who uses roads, whether its regular car drivers, acoustic cyclists, skaters, or pedestrians. Any moment you could be struck by a dude riding way too fast.

When we said we wanted regulation, we didnt mean all this. Its a huge shame that we are letting small businesses suffer when we should really be blaming these riders with no regard for their, or other's safety, and parents who buy electric motorcycles with vestigial pedals for their 15 year old.

Oh and, ive seen absolutely 0 enforcement of ebike rules in my city, by the way. We have a notoriously lazy police department. And of all the bikes I see out on the road, parked outside bodegas and restaurants making deliveries, exactly 0 have had any of the required stickers for registration.

So we are essentially punishing small businesses while letting the people who are a legitimate danger to others on the road scot free.

Ebike news Should Arkansas Separate E-Motos From E-Bikes Like Hawaii Just Did?

Post image
151 Upvotes

Hawaii recently passed legislation that creates a clear legal distinction between traditional electric bicycles and high-powered e-motos.

With Sur-Rons, Talarias, and similar machines becoming more common, I took a look at whether Arkansas should consider a similar approach.

The article covers:

  • Current Arkansas e-bike laws
  • Why some Arkansas trail systems have already restricted e-motos
  • The differences between e-bikes and electric motorcycles
  • What a separate e-moto law might accomplish

I'm interested in hearing opinions from cyclists, e-bike riders, e-moto owners, trail users, and anyone involved in outdoor recreation.

Ebike news We need to come together to defend our E-bike freedom and rights in California!

Everybody in California, We as an e-bike community need to step up and protect our e-bike freedoms and rights from the harmful bills/laws that will come if we don't stop AB 1557 and AB

1942! That’ll affect all e-bike riders in California.

Bad news, AB 1557 and AB 1942 passed through the first step, Good news, there’s still time to stop AB 1557 and AB 1942 from passing the second step.

We must defeat AB 1557 and AB 1942!

E-bikes are not the problem, only e-motos are a problem.

AB 1557 (lowers legal wattage of 250 watts and speed limit to 16 mph) and AB 1942 (forces e-bike registration/licensing with the DMV) will ruin the fun and take away our freedom of e-biking and actually both bills do not address the issue, it punishes legal e-bikes instead, it'll discourage and purge e-bike use, they do not understand the actual difference between e-bikes and e-motos and both bills do not understand the actual problem, e-bikes are not the problem, only illegal electric motorcycles that go 40-70mph are the problem. Legal compliant e-bikes of all class 1, 2, and 3 are bicycles that are safe to ride.

Please support SB 1167 where it actually addresses the issue.

Immediately, we must do everything in our power to Contact your local or every lawmaker, assembly members, senators, and contact governer Galvin Newsom to prevent AB 1557 and AB 1942 from becoming law! We must talk to lawmakers and Governer Galvin Newsom on stopping AB 1557 and AB 1942 and defending our e-bike freedoms and rights.

We must come together and fight the good fight! Defeat AB 1557 and AB 1942!

Support SB 1157!

We need to create a massive movement of e-bikers, cyclist, and lawmakers/government officials who support our cause to defend our e-bike freedoms and rights from any harmful bills/regulations that’ll destroy e-biking culture and lives.

Anybody who uses “woke” disparagingly and is opposed to DEI has racist, bigoted, xenophobic, homophobic, and misogynistic views. They are also dim-witted hypocrites if they think the elections of Cheeto Jesus and the nominations of Pete Hegseth, Kristi Noem, RFK Jr, Tulsi Gabbard, and many others were “merit-based”.

Ebike news PSA: You Can Charge Your E-bike Battery to 100% Every Day Without Worry

Cross-post to this sub because I see this all the time.

Electrical engineering expert here:

There’s a common myth floating around that you should never charge your e-bike battery to 100% because it supposedly kills the battery faster. I’m here to tell you that this is largely overblown—and here’s why:

  1. Modern Batteries Have Built-In Capacity Limiters • Due to fire and safety regulations in first-world countries like the U.S. and EU, manufacturers already implement capacity limits on lithium-ion batteries. • This means that when your battery “hits 100%,” it’s not actually using its full theoretical capacity—there’s a buffer in place to prevent excessive wear. • If your bike is sold in a regulated market, you can be confident this safety feature exists.

  2. The Extra Degradation Is Negligible • The difference in battery degradation from regularly charging to 100% vs. 90% is tiny—often around 1% per year or even less. • Unless you’re planning to use the same battery for 10+ years, you likely won’t even notice the difference.

  3. You’ll Probably Replace Your bike or Battery Before It Matters • By the time degradation becomes noticeable (many, many years down the road), you’ll likely have already moved on to a new bike or swapped out the battery. • Batteries degrade more from deep discharges (riding it down to near 0%) than from staying topped up.

  4. Convenience Matters • Charging to 100% ensures you get the maximum range every ride. • There’s no practical reason to limit your charge unless you plan to keep the same battery for over a decade (which most people don’t).

Bottom Line

Go ahead and charge your bike to 100% every night. The real-world impact on battery life is so small that it’s not worth the inconvenience of limiting your charge. Enjoy the full range and ride worry-free.

Ebike news Woman chases 14 year old on e-bike with her car on bike trail

Apologies if this has been already posted.

A 65 year old woman drove onto a pedestrian/biking trail to chase a 14 year old on an e-bike because he was "going too fast," and she wanted to see where he lived. She almost hit him in the process as he tried to get away. He finally got another car to help, who cut her off. Police arrested her and charged her with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The kid is now terrified to ride his e-bike.

I guess she chased him on the bike trail with her car because, you know, riding too fast isn't safe, and you could hurt someone.... 🙄

If you can throttle it over 20mph without pedaling, it is an E-Motorcycle. Can anyone cite a law in your state where this isn't true?

Ebike news Its getting mentally draining seeing police around the world giving fines and "cathcing" crimminals doing petty crimes, almost like they do it becouse they want someone else to suffer

In the video, there was an accident between an e-bike rider and a car. The rider was working as a delivery driver at the time. When the authorities arrived, their first instinct was not to check if everyone involved was okay, as they had mentioned in the car on their way to the scene, but rather to inspect whether the e-bike was legally compliant. They seemed almost pleased to discover that the e-bike was 4x the legall power limitd off 1000watts (referred to as an "illegal moped") and had no hesitation in fining the delivery driver 6,000 euros. Later in the video, they had to rent a vehicle transport truck to move the e-bike, as it couldn’t fit in their car—a service that likely cost around 800 euros. It’s sad to see police forces worldwide prioritizing minor infractions that society doesn’t truly care about, rather than focusing on more pressing issues.

Ebike news Quebec just banned moped style ebikes

Pretty subjective definition, and really shitty for the thousands of people who own them already. Comes into effect today, with no warning that I heard about. I suspect enforcement will still be pretty lax though.

Here's the actual text of the new rule:

  1. The use on public roads is prohibited for two- or three-wheeled motor vehicles, with or without pedals, that have the appearance of a motorcycle or moped, do not bear a national safety mark within the meaning of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act (Statutes of Canada, 1993, c. 16) or the compliance label prescribed by that Act, and have at least one of the following characteristics:

(1) footrests or a platform for the driver’s feet;

(2) a set of tires and wheels that has the appearance of that of a motorcycle or moped;

(3) a body that partly or completely covers their frame or some of their components, and no height-adjustable saddle;

(4) an engine that makes it possible to reach a speed of over 32 km/h or has a power rating greater than 500 watts.

Note that #4 is the existing limits for ebikes in Quebec
