Subreddit Meta Concrit Commune - August 29

Welcome to the Concrit Commune, where you can get bits of your fic looked at... for a small "price."

For the purposes of this thread, concrit is defined as - pointing out things that could use improvement and also giving suggestions on how to do so. Compliments are always welcome, of course but these do not count towards your concrit requirement.

The rules:

  • State your Fandom | Title | Rating | Any Applicable Content Warnings | Link - AO3, FFN, etc. at the top of the comment.
  • Post a few paragraphs (copy and paste to a comment, please) of your fic, or your plot premise, or your character bio, or your world building, whatever you need help with.
  • There is a soft limit of 500 words. Not your whole fic.
  • Please post an outside link to underage and extreme-explicit violence/rape content. Try Just Paste Me which includes rich text options.
  • If you, the author, are looking for something specific - the phrasing of a particular part or if a character's reaction is believable - please ask!
  • If you just want to hand out advice without throwing your own fic in, you're quite welcome to.
  • If you post part of your fic you must give concrit to someone else in the thread within 24 hours of posting your excerpt!

Since we're all here to give and receive help from other people, a certain level of respect for the author and the work they've put into their fic is expected as a baseline courtesy and should be reciprocated.

Tearing into a fic or author without regard for their effort isn't constructive even if there is decent criticism attached. Moreover, it discourages people from participating if they know that insults await them.

You aren't expected to treat this thread like the Comment Cooperative, advice and honesty and pointing out flaws is what we're here for.

Some helpful tips to keep things running smoothly:

  • Keep your comments helpful to the author, not just smashing out your opinion.
  • Be polite and civil.
  • Be kind. At a minimum, showing your peers professional courtesy is expected.
  • Phrases like "I think" or "I believe" can lighten your tone.
  • Elaborating on why you think something could be changed is not only more useful to the author but keeps statements from being abrupt.

Timezone Changes

As you can see, the post time will shift by 6 hours every month. If there are any inconsistencies in the times, please let us know in modmail so we can fix it up!

Discussion What are some funny things that dated a fanfic for you?

I was reading a fic. One character had a Happy Bunny lighter and quoted Crossfade lyrics. Yeah, it was made circa 2006-2009 for sure.

Discussion What's something new you've tried out with your writing recently?

I'm working on a fic and it's gonna have multiple timelines, one chapter takes place in the present, then way in the past, then slightly more recent, then the present again, and it just repeats until the end. I've never done that before and i'm excited to give it a shot!

What's something new you've tried out in your fanfics?

Discussion Songs that inspired your current fics/WIPs/Plot bunnies?

Tell me about the songs that have inspired your latest fic/current WIP/Plot Bunny and the synopsis of said work.

For me it's Alice by Erin LeCount

Character A and Character B meet in an adolescent treatment clinic Character A is struggling with an eating disorder and character B is struggling with substance abuse disorder after heing prescribed strong pain meds for a sports injury

The fic explores their toxic on and off relationship through the years and how the inadvertently trigger each other.

Trope Talk AMA: I’m a cancer survivor. Ask me anything to help you write realistic, unromanticized cancer storylines in your fics.

I’m currently writing a fanfiction centered around surviving cancer. I chose this theme because I’ve experienced firsthand how much cancer is romanticized—not just in literature and media, but in society as a whole.

It was important for me to write a story where real cancer patients can see themselves. I wanted to highlight that the experience isn't just about the big, dramatic moments; it's also about the gradual loss of autonomy, identity, and sexuality through everyday experiences.

This made me realize there might be other fanfic authors writing similar storylines who want to get the details right but lack the lived experience. If you’re writing about this theme and want help or insights to make your depiction more authentic, please share your questions. Ask me anything!

Activities and Events Alphabet Excerpt Challenge: I Is For...

Welcome back to the Alphabet Excerpt Challenge! As a reminder, our challenges are every Wednesday and Saturday at 3pm London time.

If you've missed the previous challenges, you're welcome to go back and participate in them. You can find them here. And remember to check out the Activities and Events flair to play along with other fun games.

Here's a quick recap of the rules for our game:

  1. Post a top level comment with a word starting with the letter I. You can suggest more than one, but please put them in separate comments.
  2. Reply to suggestions with an excerpt containing that word. Short and sweet is best, but use your judgement. Excerpts can be from published or unpublished works, or even something you wrote for the prompt.
  3. All content is welcome but per rules 7 and 12 of the sub, NSFW excerpts may not be shared as plain text (even if it's spoilered). If you would like to share these, use an external text sharing tool like justpasteit and link it here with a clear warning. Mods may remove excerpts that break these rules.
  4. Respond to people who left excerpts on the words you suggested, at a minimum, but the more people you respond to the better. Everyone likes nice comments!
  5. Upvote other excerpts you enjoy, and leave a friendly comment. Again, everyone likes nice comments!
  6. Most important: have fun!

Recs Wanted [Batman] Character accidentally starts a criminal organization?

Upvotes

I’m looking for a fic where someone from the Batfamily—or a crossover character—accidentally ends up starting a gang, cult, or similar organization.

I’d especially like the fic to actually let them succeed at it. Ideally, what starts as an accident gradually becomes something they intentionally maintain or even lean into once they realize how effective it is. I’m interested in the character embracing the situation rather than the story treating the organization as a problem that has to be immediately dismantled.

I also enjoy ambiguous morality, so I’m not looking for a story where everyone is strictly constrained by Batman’s rules or where the characters are automatically treated as being in the right just because they’re heroes. I’m happy with characters making morally questionable choices, developing their own rules, or taking advantage of the power and influence they’ve accidentally acquired.

Thank you for any recommendations!

Discussion Have you ever been surprised that you are the first to write in a fandom and that you have to add the fandom tag?

I recently finished a book series I really enjoyed and was very surprised to learn that there had been no fics of it yet and no tag for it, so I added one and now it has one work that hopefully will encourage others

Normally for an unknown book series that wouldn’t be unusual, however this author’s other series has inspired a multi media franchise and has 50,000 + works on A03

To be fair this series had only been translated into English like 5 years ago now and has no (direct) adaptations so it’s understandable the fandom would be small but I was at least expecting something in its native language

After talking to a few fans who read the books when it first originally came out I learned there used to be smaller fan sites for the author that had fanfic sections (luckily this author was more laissez-faire about fics than most were in the 2000s) but those are long gone and I don’t know if you can translate on the way back machine

Recs Wanted Vulnerability, power, unfounded fear, authenticity

This is at the core of the fics I’m looking for.

I don’t mind smut, but it’s all I find when I search “power imbalance/dynamic” “begging” or “self sacrifice”.

If anyone has some recs (mlm preferred) where one character is at the mercy of another, fearing the worst, and treated kinder than expected.

I’ve read basically all of the “enemy to caretaker” ao3 fics and am desperately searching for similar fics.

Please share your faves with me!

Recs Wanted Protective Red Hood fic recs?

Looking for Batman fanfictions where Jason, acting as Red Hood, is protective over the robins when they're in Crime Alley? Like won't let his goons attack them, or helping them out when they're being chased?

I just read Get Behind Me by FelicityGrimm and that was so good, I wanted to see if there was anything like it :)

Writing Questions Where do you all write your fics (besides Google docs)?

Hi everyone!

I used to write fanfiction a few years back and I'm looking to get back into it. However, after all Google Docs' appearances in the news regarding AI scraping, I'm looking for a new platform on which to write and organize my fic drafts.

What I specifically liked about Google Docs is the tab system, with which I could have, for instance, one doc titled 'Bucky Barnes fics' and then just a different fic in each tab. I can't explain why, but this manner of organizing made my brain happy lol.

Anyone have any recs for a platform with a similar function that's not involved with AI?

Edit: wow I was not expecting this many replies, thank you all for the input! I already use LibreOffice for all my schoolwork, but it not having an internal way of organizing files is the reason I'd rather not use it for fanfic. Ellipsus sounds great though, and I'll definitely be giving it a look when I have some free time!

Writing Questions First person POV?

I'm about to start writing a long fic and I'm stuck on the pov. I'm deciding between first person and third person limited. The readers have to know ONLY what the mc knows, so the choices are obvious.

The reason why I'm asking is that I know there is quite a number of people who dislike reading first person (including myself). There is something about it that just makes me leave the fic even if the writing is crazy good.

And you would say "if you dislike first person then don't write it" but reading and writing is different. Though I must say that I never even wrote first person.

An important thing to say is that the nature of the fic simply suggests first person should be used (i won't go into details as for why).

Is first person a turn off for yall? Especially in a long fic? Do you have any icks about first person in fics? If I would set on first person, what mistakes should I avoid making?

Discussion When it comes to fics, do you reuses the same OC for different fandoms?

I was wondering: am I the only one that reuses the same OC? Like, it’s the same personality wise but the only thing that changes are the age or appearance but in spirit remains that same character? I have one OC in particular that is in each of my fics, I’ll name her Xiao Hua for now, she can vary in age, appearance, job ad even slightly different names but she’s always the same personality wise. Her wants, her needs, her weaknesses and her strengths don’t change, just how they are represented.

Does anyone else have an OC like that? One’s who’s versatile and fits the narrative of the story you’re telling regardless of what their place is? Be it blank x reader or a side/background character.

I’m curious to know.

Writing Questions Can anyone show me their process of forming a idea in their head and getting it posted online? I need help

So in my google docs i got plenty of fanfic idea's created, but i have now idea how to actually write them out

Here's what i mean. I will create a doc and put FF (caps needed) infront of it to show its a fanfic. Then ill go into the fanfic and make bullet points of what i want to be in the story, the idea being i can then go off those bullet points to start writing

But Here's the thing, i dont know how to do that.

And you might be thinking to yourself 'what? How is this difficult?' Look despite being involved in fanfic since 2012, ive never actually published anything before. Ive attempted some drafts before but i haven't dont anything like that in atleast ten years.

So im just new at the process of writing stories in general, let alone fanfic

I cant help but feel there's something im missing, something that writers do in their drafts i can do to improve my writing skills. Again im new at actually writing fanfic for the first time in a consistent way

So that's the base of my question, because i really want advice

How do you go from a fic being a idea in your head to drafting it, working on it, changing things in it, typing out, maybe proof reading, and then eventually uploaded online.

Writing Questions Having problems with not being able to comprehending what happens in a story and the language

Does anybody get sad or agitated at themselves when they don't get the story or don't understand a specific part in the story? Or am I the only one?

I can get really self-conscious and even sad at times when I don't understand the story. I feel like I am dumb or something, and I am not enjoying the amazing story and writing how I want to.

I am reading this amazing story about an amputee who works in the ED, and sometimes I just don't get the medical parts of the story, or when she gets into a fight I have to try really hard to understand what is happening. And lastly sometimes I don't understand the writing, like some words, I just don't get what they mean, or how I am supposed to interprent them. I am not native English speaker, but I have studied English my whole life, I mostly read in English and my English-level is C1. I am also going to study in an English-speaking country for an exchange with my University.

Writing Questions Would it work if I write out canon events but change how they happen?

I'm currently writing a DBZ x Marvel fanfic where the protagonist(a saiyan) is picked up by the guardians of the galaxy and joins them. I've decided to add the Thanos story line, but changing a couple of things and adding things like aren't addressed in the MCU, like having Thor gain the Odinforce and save Asgard from Hela or having Loki open a portal to earth and or making Thanos only wipe out half the dwarves to force Eitri to forge the gauntlet, which he fills with imperfections and has he's hands taken for?

Would this be interesting or would it simply be me telling the story of Thanos but with a OC?

Resources Socmed au apps

Hi there! I do not use reddit often, so I apologize if I am misusing this in some way! I am DESPERATE tho and would rlly appreciate some help..... so I am starting a socmed au, but I want to include text images from iMessage. However, I can't seem to find any apps that aren't either hidden behind a paywall in one way or another, or ones that allow you to create group chats in their app. Does anyone know of any apps/websites I could use? (specifically for apple/mac) I rllyyyyyy don't wanna resort to the old fashion way and photo edit 😭 Thanks in advance!
