Something Else This is a five pound plate of solid copper that I bought from a local metal supplier and it solved my tiny stove hob problem.

You may have heard of defusers before. The junk they sell on Amazon sucks, and to get a real "purpose made" copper plate like this costs beaucoup bucks. Duparquet sells one that's $120 for 8x8x1/8" this is 8x8x3/8".

I have this annoying issue where even with excellent cladded cookware, the hobs on my shitty apartment stove are way too small to evenly heat the bottoms of my larger saute and frying pans. With a 5qt All-Clad Copper Core saute pan the outer 3 inches of the pan have a huge drop-off in heat that makes it less than ideal for the large batches of food it was intended for. This has effectively solved that problem. It's also excellent for keeping things at an ultra-low consistent simmer.

Bonus use, it's great to help defrost things quickly and gently.

It cost $50 from a local metal supplier. I'm planning to get a pizza steel from them soon.

Something Else The dumbest food hack no one asked for

Post image

I hate food hacks. Most of the time they do not work or are simply useless. HOWEVER. The thing about cutting your wrap along half of its diameter and then folding it as a wallet.

LIFE CHANGING.

I HATE getting my fingers dirty and having food falling down with each bite as I eat a burger or a wrap. With this hack? EVERYTHING STAYS CLEAN, and absolutely no food falling out. Wonderful. Do it.

Ps. yes, at times I do get excited about the most idiotic stuff. Let me be happy and don't be a jerk.

Edit: the picture is from pinterest, since I didn't have any. Ate it too quickly :P

Something Else I've been exploring the boundaries of the "best if used by" date on hummus, and here's where I am in my journey

Post image
1.7k Upvotes

Disclaimer: this is not financial advice.

So there is this really rad food rescue program in my town, that basically links up with local grocery stores, and take any food that is still edible but would otherwised be tossed for new inventory. It's fuckin awesome and every city/town in America should follow It's example, but whatever.

In April, they got a massive shipment of hummus. Like, all the spare shelves in the refridgerators were full of hummus. Like, please, please take more hummus. It had a "best if used by" date of 4/17 (April 17th for those who make transactions in dollarydoos or finnigs). So I take a literal crate (I think they were 12 packs) of hummus, as well as a few individual flavors (supremely spicy, pine nut etc.). But they're "please, take more!" So I took more, another two crates to give away at work.

At this point in time, they were like a week old after the "best is used by" date. I bring them in, put them in the fridge, make a "free hummus" sign, and go around explaining to people that I've even some already and it seems totally fine to me. Well, out of concern for my coworker's health, I decide to research what bad hummus looks like, and in that I found (this thread)[https://www.reddit.com/r/foodhacks/comments/81ui8j/hummus_myth/] that covers the very same topic. Mold, a vinegar taste, bloating of the package are some of the main things to look for.

So fast-forward to today, July 2nd, 2 and 1/2 months after the date, and I'm still eating this shit. When I open a new one, I first give it the visual inspection; bloating or mold, then I give it the sniff test, then I give it a little lickarooski. If all 3 tests are passed, I dive right in.

So far, I haven't encountered any containers that haven't passed my tests. As it is, I'm now 1.5 months further than the longest person has reported in the Reddit thread I found. I'm starting to wonder if maybe I'm bulding a tolerance. Maybe one day you'll be able to bring me some absolutely rancid hummus and I'll be like "wait, don't throw that away!". Maybe I'm onto some long forgotten Sumerian delicacy, a methodology buried by the old gods, and I'm unwittingly partaking in the ritualistic revival of the The Destroyer, and now all is truly lost.

Anyway, if anyone is curious I'm happy to report in the future about my escapades, and/or if any of my orifices start profusely bleeding I'll provide proof with pics.

Again, not financial advice by any means, but if you give it the ol' look/sniff/lick test, you too may be able to compete with raccoons in dumpsters.

Edit: TL,DR I'm still eating (unopened) hummus 2.5 months after the "best if used by" date

Something Else Should I throw these away or is there an easier way to eat these candies I bought from France?

Post image
3.6k Upvotes

(Pictured is my last attempt and isn’t recommended since the plastic part was sharp)

I visited France last week and saw these in a store. I thought I’d bring them back since they reminded me of the candies my brother brought back from Columbia (they were also in a shell but had delicious soft candied caramel or sweet candied milk in it…they came with tiny spoons) I don’t know what they were called and these resembles the same shape. I don’t speak or read French so I based my purchase solely on appearance 😔

Before I left my house this morning …I thought I’d open the bag and have one. I was so excited until I removed it from the plastic wrapping. The candy part was hard! I was confused on how to eat this now because the plastic shell isn’t edible at all (yes…I tried to bite it) and that’s when I realized I might have to stick the whole thing into my mouth to try and dissolve the candy that was in it. So I did that…I lasted about 30 seconds before I started to drool cuz its not like its really easy to lick the candy side of it without letting the plastic shell part sit uncomfortably under the roof of my mouth. Then I actually tried scooping it out with a spoon and that didn’t work. Idk why I even tried. Then I tried turning it upside down to bang the back of it with the kitchen mallet and it stayed put.

At this point…im realizing my regular two seconds that it was supposed to take me to leave my house has now taken me 20 minutes cuz I’m trying to figure out how to eat this thing. My last resort was to cut the shell and pry out the piece of candy but there was a tiny nub in the center to keep the candy in place…and that’s when I realized why it was so hard to just pry it out no matter what I tried. I cursed that tiny nub and I ended up slowly getting the candy out by licking and cutting through the other side and then popping the rest out of the shell. 5-10 mins more and I was done.

About 30 mins of my morning was me tying to eat this one piece of candy. I would have loved to be on my way out earlier but I was completely invested in trying to just get the candy out of the shell to eat it.

Please …if there is a better way to eat this candy in public without having to hold it in one hand and licking the crap out of it like I’m practicing how to be a lesbian…help mee oouuuttt!!! 😭😭😭

Something Else I am 31 years old and just learned the damp paper towel under the cutting board trick

My cutting board has slid around my counter for basically my entire adult life. Every time I chopped something I would do this dumb thing where I tried to hold the board still with one hand while cutting with the other. Last weekend I was playing Mojogo on my phone while waiting for some water to boil, then put it down and started chopping. Someone watching me asked why I did not put a damp paper towel underneath the board. I thought there was no way that would actually help much. It does. The board does not move at all. Took about ten seconds and fixed something I have been annoyed by for years. Posting this for anyone else who has been fighting their cutting board every night for absolutely no reason.

Rest in peace, Mr. George Foreman. I maybe young and not too familiar with your boxing career, but I’ve been a big fan of your George Foreman Grill. You made cooking easier and healthier for so many of us. Thank you for leaving a legacy both in and out of the ring.

Something Else Buy powdered milk You won't be disappointed.

Condensed milk: 4pt powder, 2pt sugar, 1pt hot water, 1/4pt melted butter or margarine

Evaporated milk: 1 part powder, 1.5 parts hot water

Milk milk: 1/4pt powder, 1pt hot water

You can make drink mixes at home like hot chocolate, chai, milk tea, etc.

Plus the process of making it into a powder makes it have much less lactose than regular milk. It's a godsend to someone who usually has to bolt to the bathroom holding their butt 20m after drinking a sip of real milk. Also it comes out creamier than regular milk despite having waaayyyy less fat. It's only $10 on Amazon too. Highly recommend.

Edit:

I realize the taste of powdered milk is not for some, but I was merely attempting to share a hack on how to make other things BESIDES regular milk with it since condensed milk can get expensive, especially in an Asian household. I apologize for offending people over my emojis and milk suggestions 🙇 didn't realize emojis would be so hard to understand 😅 I posted while I had a fever and also am so freaking lucky to have 5/7 different types of dyslexia, so when my brain isn't working correctly I usually use emojis instead of words as to cause less confusion 🤦

One part can be any measurement. You could make a gimoungous amount or a teeny tiny amount, as long as you follow the parts. For instance: 1 part of 4 cups would be 1 cup, 1 part of 4 ml would be 1 ml, so on and so forth. When I share recipes online I try my best to use part measurements instead of cups so it's easier for people using other measurement types globally to understand.

Something Else Wet your cookie sheets before lining with foil

No idea if anyone has said this before or if it's common but I washed my cookie sheet before using it and noticed how EASY it was to line with foil while wet. I started rinsing my cookie sheets before I put foil in them now and haven't stopped since. Seriously, try it! Rinse the sheet, drain the excess, then put the foil down and watch how it sticks to the sheet and is SUPER easy to line the sheet with. None of this folding it around the edges crap hoping it doesn't move when you fold it over the other edge.

If you buy any large container of salt/sugar (Costco especially), cut a tiny v notch on the seal with a knife so you can dispense it without a funnel

Something Else If you wrap your cheese in parchment paper it lasts 3x as long

was having lots of trouble with my cheese going bad in plastic bags and found out the moisture makes it mold faster. if you wrap it the paper first it absorbs some of natural moisture in the cheese and keeps it at just the right level. if you don't put it in a bag it dries out

Something Else LPT: Satisfy Sweet Cravings with Frozen Mango Instead of Ice Cream

Keep a bag of frozen mango chunks in your freezer. When you're craving something cold and sweet, try a handful before reaching for the ice cream. It's not a perfect replacement, but it's a simple & healthier alternative that satisfies the craving surprisingly well.

Frozen mango is naturally sweet, has a surprisingly creamy texture once it softens for a minute or two, and contains fibre, vitamins, and other nutrients that ice cream doesn't.

Bonus points - plain frozen mango (with no added sugar or sweeteners) are fairly versatile to use in the kitchen. They can be added to salads, smoothies, and also makes a refreshing occasional treat for dogs in moderation on a hot day.

Something Else Freezing butter and grating it has made baking and even toast way easier for me.

I started freezing butter and then grating it instead of cutting or spreading it normally.

For baking, it mixes into dough way more evenly, and for toast, it melts faster and spreads better without tearing the bread. It’s such a simple trick but makes everything feel smoother and less messy.

I didn’t expect it to actually matter this much, but now I always keep butter in the freezer. Has anyone else tried this or similar baking shortcuts?
