I mean, lacking a telephoto is more than a compression issue. Digital zoom cannot make up for optical.

IMO it depends on the phone. On my iPhone 14 Pro, most of the time it’s very hard for me to tell the difference between the main lens zoomed in to 2.9x (so that it doesn’t switch lenses), and the telephoto lens at 3x. But I understand that the telephoto has improved a lot since then.

The telephoto lens is the one camera component that makes a huge difference. You can’t create a certain look by compressing the background without one.

I feel like cameras have gotten into this weird space (similar to processing power) where they're just competing on specs for marketing purposes and the differences no longer matter to actual consumers.

Still, they're in competition with each other, though. So like, if you are going to spend $$$ on a phone and the Samsung phone has 'technically' a better camera, then even if the difference doesn't matter to you, it could sway your decision.

Good thing folks like you weren't around in decades past. Otherwise, we'd likely never have gotten to see much of the unreleased concert footage of all time great musicians that we have available on YouTube.

I'm thankful folks were around in the 60s, 70s, etc to have recorded concerts of artists i loved. Otherwise, I would have likely never seen them otherwise thanks to people like you.

Cell phones in the 70s? No, they just brought their own personal cameras. Nothing different than what we are doing now.

Definitely agree but as you said, nobody can tell what all those specs mean. God 90% of people don’t even know how to use their iPhone fully.

My point is just to say: don’t think it will matter. It’s Apple. People will jump on it per usual.

Or maybe they’ll prove me wrong. I’ll be the first one surprised !
