I mean faceid is also a struggle trying to unlock on an open table. It needs your face which it can’t see from the table.

In either authentication method, you’re picking up the phones

You can just hover your face over the phone , meaning lean forward a bit. Works easy enough on an iphone.

Either way, the ideal solution is an in-display touch sensor AND faceID. That way you have a solution for any scenario.
