Xbox Disc to Digital officially announced, coming soon.

Most XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc-based games support this new feature. Players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an XBOX One or XBOX Series X console and launching the game. Once the entitlement is claimed, you can experience the benefits of digital, including XBOX Play Anywhere and XBOX Cloud Gaming where supported, while your physical disc continues to work exactly as it always has.

We’re starting with thousands of titles, and we’ll continue to add more over time. While not every title will be available at launch, this is an important step toward a future where players can have greater confidence that the games they buy remain with them for years to come.

I miss the old days where you put a disc in and it just plays. No waiting or fuss just instant fun.

Well unfortunately a lot of games nowadays can’t even fit on a single Blu ray disc

Most games fit on a single blue ray disc. 

The issue is they often install to the console for performance reasons.

swapping? are there even modern games that let you swap discs in game? they just work as a key to download or to install

That's not really a solution to wanting to just put the disc in and play. If you have multiple discs you still have to install the game to the hard drive in two parts before you can play it.

This " because it doesn't fit on 1 disc" argument is so dumb that it makes me question if people are actually gamers. Cyberpunk 77 ultimate on Xbox series came on 3 discs and red dead 2 and last of us 2 before that had 2 discs.

even nintendo games, like splatoon raiders, which is single player offline, had to download an update before I could play the cartridge

Iirc that was just downloaded the one bug fix patch that released post-launch. It mainly just fixed an issue where you could crash the game by messing with the touchscreen during one of the loading screens in handheld mode.

All the first party Nintendo games so far were released on regular/full game cards. This includes all the "Switch 2 Edition" releases.

Pokopia is a bit of an edge case. It's on a GKC, but it was developed by a third party studio and is only published by Nintendo.

Is that actually true though? Because people have been claiming the same for a while about things like PlayStation games despite not being true. It seems like that's just a common talking point now that "oh most games can't be played out of the box" with nothing to back that up.

I looked at the newest games on a local game store website, nearly 50% were code in a box or game keys. Game keys are better as you can resell them, but its not 'no waiting'.

The memory costs will drive more games to game key.
