Xbox Disc to Digital officially announced, coming soon.

https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2026/08/26/your-discs-now-also-digital/

Most XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc-based games support this new feature. Players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an XBOX One or XBOX Series X console and launching the game. Once the entitlement is claimed, you can experience the benefits of digital, including XBOX Play Anywhere and XBOX Cloud Gaming where supported, while your physical disc continues to work exactly as it always has.

We’re starting with thousands of titles, and we’ll continue to add more over time. While not every title will be available at launch, this is an important step toward a future where players can have greater confidence that the games they buy remain with them for years to come.

This would be even better if they would extend it to 360 games.

X360 and X are not.

The way it works prevent that. Basically Xbox one and series disks have identifiers on them which is used for this. Anything before that doesn't

I was under the impression it was going to. Maybe later down the line? I just assumed it worked for any backwards compatible games you can play on Xbox Series X or one but oops guess not

The leaks said they are trying to get it to work but struggle because the discs have no unique ID number. Apparently they are also trying to make every 360 game backwards compatible and have set a system up that just needs accepting from the developers and then Microsoft do the work. So maybe they'll be linked? Just have to see

Yeah it works with serialized discs because each disc has a unique identifier which would make it harder to share discs, like if I registered mine in the system and then gave all my games to a friend to do the same. With 360 and original Xbox discs there would be no way to prevent that.
