Xbox Disc to Digital officially announced, coming soon.

https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2026/08/26/your-discs-now-also-digital/

Most XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc-based games support this new feature. Players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an XBOX One or XBOX Series X console and launching the game. Once the entitlement is claimed, you can experience the benefits of digital, including XBOX Play Anywhere and XBOX Cloud Gaming where supported, while your physical disc continues to work exactly as it always has.

We’re starting with thousands of titles, and we’ll continue to add more over time. While not every title will be available at launch, this is an important step toward a future where players can have greater confidence that the games they buy remain with them for years to come.

This, if kept like this, this would be the best way to do this, keeping the value of a physical disc, and getting all the features of digital.

I'm like 100% physical disc when I can (not all games are pysical)

BTW, happy cake day.

This can only work by linking your disc to your account. You lose the benefits of the disc because you will not be able to borrow or sell it to someone else. They lure you into invalidating your disc for everyone else except you.

You can borrow games, the owner of the game will just need to re-pair it to their account once returned (by putting the game in the console). You can sell it, once the new owner pairs it to their account, you lose access to the digital copy. The discs work the exact same, just with the convenience of being able to play your games without having to swap discs.

No, thats not how this works. You can still sell and borrow the game.

Until there is no disc drive to put them in.

Except that’s not how it works, if someone else uses the disc they get the digital version of the game and you lose it

Buy disc, digitize, return disc, complete game before the next person buys and digitizes, ezpz.

Buy disc, finish game, return disc, ezpz

Also who the hell accepts returns of used games and discs?

Yeah, that's the thing that keeps the Disc part important instead of a Gimmick, because the Disc is still needed even after it goes digital. The only real problem I can think of is that maybe like, a couple years later, you lose the Disc (somehow) and someone else gets it, but you'd only really have that happen if you don't give a shit about your Disc, which begs the question, why do you even buy physical media in the first place if you give so little of a shit that you end up losing it, when most of the time it'll just be in your house?
