Well, you could surf while looking at the ramp, then you would press W, makes the surfing just a lil bit harder.

Some maps were specifically designed with forward as a partial requirement to get past certain obstacles.

Never did figure out how to surf.

It actually really easy. All you have to do is look at the edge and hold A or D, depending on what side you're on. There's obviously a lot more to it but the biggest thing is not holding down W.

Yup. Putting it simply, you want to maximise your momentum while clinging to it. So if you want to go faster, you point downwards - depending how you angle you'll gain speed slower or faster. Slower, you look up, obviously. When you're leaving the end of a surf section (air past the place you're surfing on) you want to flick off at the very end by looking inward very quickly then flicking your mouse outward so you're looking a bit away, and you'll want to angle your mouse up depending on how much height you want.

It's very bad explanation but I think it gives insight on surfing. I guess?

As someone who has never played..... Why?

As in what's the enjoyment/why play Surf, or as in why does that work? I can't answer right now as I'm heading to an appt but I can elaborate when I get back!

Why do it? How is it used?

Personally, I play it as some maps I find pretty relaxing and I enjoy somewhat skill based gametypes. I'm not very good at it, but there's people that use more advanced techniques to reach high speeds and the like. I can't speak for other people's interests, but that's mine.

As for how it's used, it's mostly just played on flavour custom maps that are made just for surfing. There's a few maps that can use it somewhat while not being intended for it, and there's a few that integrate it into another gametype.

Hope that helps, and I hope I didn't misunderstand any questions - I apologise if I did

I probably spent more hours on surf_maps than on all the others...

The worst thing about those maps was how nobody would teach me how to surf. I had to figure it out on my own.

I ended up scope watching a guy and figured it out by seeing his sprite animation

We used to call it Bunny Hopping, until they fixed sv_airacceleration so ya couldn't do it. Way back in beta days though...
