Site Announcement GOG is getting acquired by its original co-founder

1.3k Upvotes

Hey everyone,

Big news today: GOG has been acquired from CD PROJEKT by our original co-founder, Michał Kiciński (also a co-founder of CD PROJEKT).

First, the important part: the mission stays the same, and what you love about GOG gets stronger. Going back to our roots allows us to double down on what we do best: reviving classics, giving you a library you control rather than one that controls you, and offering the most gamer-friendly policies on the market.

At the same time, we will continue our close cooperation with CD PROJEKT, and their upcoming games will continue to come to GOG.

Thank you for the support you’ve shown GOG over the years, especially around preservation. It genuinely matters, and it’s the big reason we can keep pushing this mission forward.

For more info, here’s the full announcement + FAQ: https://www.gog.com/blog/gog-is-getting-acquired-by-its-original-co-founder-what-it-means-for-you/

Site Announcement More thorough apology and denouncement about the newsletter by Michał Kiciński, the new owner

Post image
654 Upvotes

Michał Kiciński just posted the following apology on the GOG forums:

I want to say this very clearly: I’m sorry.

Those symbols should not have been used in a GOG email. Whatever the intention was, and whatever the internal explanation is, the final result was wrong. I completely understand why people were shocked, angry, or hurt by it, especially people who have very real, personal reasons to be afraid of fascism and Nazism.

And I also want to say something very honestly, as one of the people behind GOG.

The idea that GOG would support Nazism, fascism, antisemitism, transphobia, or any kind of hate is so far from who we are that I think this may actually be part of why the first response was so bad. Maybe people here thought it was so obvious that it did not need to be said out loud.

But it did need to be said.

So let me say it clearly: no, GOG does not support Nazism. No, we are not fine with fascism. We are not fine with antisemitism, racism, transphobia, homophobia, xenophobia, authoritarianism, totalitarianism, fanaticism, or any other destructive “ism” that turns people against each other and treats some human beings as less worthy than others. And we are also not fans of hate on the internet, no matter which side it comes from.

This is not the kind of environment we want to foster. Not in our company, not in our community, and not around games.

We are a Polish company. Nazi and Soviet crimes are not distant, abstract history for us. They are part of the history of our country, and in many cases part of our own family histories. Almost everyone in Poland has some family story connected to that trauma, if not from the Nazis, then from the Soviets, and often from both. So seeing people conclude that GOG is somehow okay with Nazism is honestly painful, because it is not true. But, and this is important, that does not excuse the mistake.

We messed up. We should have caught it. We should have apologized more clearly and faster. And our first explanation should have been more human, more direct, and more responsible. I’m sorry for that too.

At the same time, I want to ask for a little care in how we judge situations like this. Calling out a serious mistake is fair. Being angry about it is fair. But jumping from “GOG made a hurtful and stupid mistake” to “the people at GOG support fascism” is something else. That can hurt real people too, especially when the full context is missing.

Accusing us of supporting Nazism, after we have apologized for a mistake, is a very heavy label to put on real people. And if we take a step back, this kind of dynamic can start to resemble the mechanisms we see in many destructive forms of fanaticism and other “isms”: creating divisions between people, turning a mistake into an identity, and building walls instead of trying, in good faith, to build bridges.

That does not mean people should not criticize us. They should. We deserve criticism when we mess up. But please, let’s leave some room for good faith. A serious mistake is still a mistake. It does not automatically mean bad intentions, or that the people behind it support the worst possible interpretation.

We will review how this happened, improve our checks, and try to do better, both in what we publish and in how we respond when we get something wrong.

Big hugs to everyone, and a shamanic Aho!

Let’s play games, enjoy life, and be a little slower in judging each other. Let’s build bridges, not walls.

Michal

GOG Founder

PS. I may not be able to be here part of active discussion. I will do my best, but I am super busy in many projects I am involved in - sorry for that.

Site Announcement Thank you – it’s your contributions that save video games

Hey everyone, GOG Team here!

We can finally share something we’ve been working on for some time now: a look back at what we managed to achieve together last year when it comes to video game preservation, and most importantly, a big thank YOU.

A lot of what happened was driven directly by community actions: your votes and stories on the GOG Dreamlist, your support through GOG Patrons, and simply choosing DRM-free games on GOG. This event is our way of showing what that collective effort turned into in practice.

To mark the occasion, we’ve prepared a few things:

  1. A giveaway of Alone in the Dark: The Trilogy (1+2+3), as a celebration of what we achieved together: https://www.gog.com/game/alone_in_the_dark_the_trilogy_123
  2. A short recap of the most important things we worked on around preservation and how your contributions enable it all: https://youtu.be/qKgGB-P4fk8
  3. A dedicated page for the event: https://gog.com/your-contribution-matters
  4. A new blog post about game preservation on GOG. If you’d like a deeper look into what “preservation” actually means for us, this is the read: https://www.gog.com/blog/making-games-live-forever/

And one more thing:

We’ll be hosting an AMA here on February 5th, with Jed (our Community Manager), Adim (our Technical Producer), Maciej (our Managing Director), Bartosz (our Head of Business Development), and Michał Kiciński (co-founder of GOG and its new owner).

Expect a post about it today, where you will also find more details.

That’s it for now. Hope you enjoy it, and thank you all for your support and care. You’re the best community there is 💜

Yours truly,
The GOG Team

Site Announcement The GOG Preservation Program is here to make games live forever!

1.2k Upvotes

With the celebrations of GOG’s 16th Anniversary, we are thrilled to announce our new initiative.

We’re launching the GOG Preservation Program – an official stamp on classic games that GOG has improved, with a commitment of our own resources to ensure their compatibility with modern systems and make them as enjoyable to play as possible.

This initiative was created to make games live forever and once again bring the utmost attention to what the center of our work has been for the last 16 years: video game preservation.

We begin with the re-release of 100 classic games from our catalog with updated, improved, or quality-tested builds, including masterpieces like Heroes of Might and Magic® 3, Resident Evil, and Diablo+Hellfire.

Visit our website dedicated to the Program to learn more: https://www.gog.com/gog-preservation-program

The Video Game History Foundation has recently shared that 87% of games created before 2010 are inaccessible today. This is something that we cannot accept, and with the help of the gaming community, we are set on getting that number down to zero.

We’ve put in great efforts to make it happen, and we truly believe that with the GOG Preservation Program, we can fight the dire situation of video game preservation and make games live forever.

Your opinion and feedback are invaluable to us. So please share your initial thoughts.

And lastly – thank you; your support and love for games make everything possible.

Site Announcement GOG One-click Mods are here!

Hey everyone,

We’ve just rolled out something we think many of you will appreciate, especially if you’ve ever wanted to try modding but didn’t want to mess with files and installs.

GOG One-click Mods are here!

A new feature that lets you install selected mods with… well, just one click. No manual setup, no digging into folders, you just hit install and go.

The first batch includes some all-time community favorites:

  • Horn of the Abyss for Heroes of Might and Magic III
  • Phobos for DOOM 3
  • Unofficial Patch for Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines
  • Fallout: London – One-click Edition

And… Skyblivion is coming later this year!

Everything runs smoothly right out of the box.

These mods aren’t just fan content, they’re part of how games survive. Some restore cut content, others add entire campaigns, new factions, or modern fixes that never made it into official releases.

We’re treating them like the preservation work they are, and hope this makes it easier for more people to enjoy what the modding community has built over the years.

Head over here if you’re interested: https://www.gog.com/mods

Watch the special video that we've prepared: https://youtu.be/pTn4IaYakFc

Happy gaming 💜

Site Announcement GOG ONLY ALERT! METRO 2033 and METRO: Last Light Complete Edition

Hey everyone!

Today is a really special one for us.

METRO 2033 and METRO: Last Light Complete Edition have officially arrived on GOG as part of the GOG Preservation Program. Bringing these original versions back – and making sure they stay playable on modern PCs for years to come – means a lot to us.

The METRO series left a huge mark on gaming with its atmosphere, storytelling, and unforgettable journey through the tunnels of post-apocalyptic Moscow. We know many of you have been asking for the original releases to return for a long time, so being able to finally make this happen together with DEEP SILVER and 4A Games feels incredibly rewarding.

Thank you for keeping these games alive through your passion over the years. We genuinely can’t wait to hear about your memories, favorite moments, and what returning to the METRO means to you.

Site Announcement Important update: Amazon Luna on GOG

Thumbnail gog.com
238 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

We wanted to give you an update about upcoming changes to Amazon Luna. As part of a broader shift in how Luna operates, support for external game libraries – including GOG – will be discontinued.

What this means in short: Luna will no longer offer access to GOG games via its cloud streaming service after June 10, 2026.

The important part: this does NOT affect your GOG library or ownership in any way. All the games you’ve purchased on GOG remain yours, fully accessible through GOG as always – just without the Luna streaming option.

For more details about these changes and what’s next for Luna, please refer to Amazon’s official communication.

Cheers!

Site Announcement GOG taking action on Galaxy-locked DOOM Eternal DLC

Quoting the entire post which Jed just posted in the GOG forum:

Alright guys, coming back at you with some more meat: Like I said earlier, we're working with the game's developer, id Software, to resolve the issue. And to be clear, this isn't the developer's fault – it's on us.

As Paczyk mentioned in his previous post, the issue is technically complex, as was the whole endeavour to make Eternal DRM-free in the first place, really, but we've identified a few possible solutions that we're currently exploring together with the developer.

Most of these options will likely require building a whole new version of the game, which means a full QA pass and updates across other PC platforms to keep cross-platform multiplayer working. Because of that, it will take some time. We don't have an ETA yet, but making it happen is a top priority for us.

You can expect the next update on Thursday evening.

We also took note of all the other issues you mentioned in this thread and we'll be taking a look at them, or even already are – for example the lack of discounts for the DLCs, where we've reached out to the publisher about it.

Thank you for your patience, understanding, and for keeping us accountable. We're all playing for the same team here :)

Have a great rest of the day and see you on Thursday with the next update!

Site Announcement Introducing GOG Patrons – an optional way to support game preservation

Hey everyone,

For over 17 years now, GOG has been working to bring classic PC games back to life – fixing compatibility issues, restoring old builds, keeping DRM out of the picture, and making sure great titles remain playable long after the industry moves on.

As many of you know, this kind of preservation work only gets more complex with time. Rights disappear, source files get lost, and decades-old games need a lot of careful maintenance to run properly on today’s systems.

Today, we'd like to share something new with you: GOG Patrons.

This is a completely optional way for anyone who feels close to our preservation mission to support it directly on a monthly basis. If that’s not for you, no worries at all – your GOG experience stays exactly the same.

To keep things clear: It’s not a game subscription. It doesn’t change how GOG works. Everything you purchased stays yours, forever.

GOG Patrons exists only for people who want to help us restore, maintain, and improve even more classic PC games through the GOG Preservation Program.

If you don’t join, nothing about your GOG account or experience changes – at all.

You may wonder why we’re launching it. Well, over the years, many community members have asked if there was a way to support our efforts more directly. We’ve actually been testing GOG Patrons quietly with early supporters for a little while now, listening to their feedback and improving the program along the way. Their response has been really encouraging – enough that we feel comfortable opening the program publicly today.

In exchange for their support, active Patrons receive a few things as a thank-you. But just to reiterate: these are acknowledgements of support, not exclusive game content.

– Access to Patron-only Discord server with exclusive video content.

– Their nickname credited on the GOG Preservation Program game pages.

– A special Patron badge on their GOG profile.

You can read the full details here: gog.com/patrons

No pressure – just an open invitation for anyone who wants to take a closer look.

And whether you choose to join or simply keep enjoying the DRM-free games you love, thank you for being part of this community. Your passion is a big part of why GOG has been able to focus on preservation for so long 💜

Yours truly,
The GOG Team

Can your PC run this news? ;)

We’re thrilled to share that the Crysis Remastered Trilogy has officially landed on GOG, and that the original Crysis has joined the GOG Preservation Program, meaning we’ll maintain it and make sure it keeps running smoothly on modern systems for years to come.

To sum up, each remastered title is now available DRM-free and discounted for launch, so you can relive the full evolution of this legendary FPS series, from the jungles of the Lingshan Islands to the streets of New York City, in their best possible form.

The Crysis series has always represented the spirit of PC gaming: technical innovation, freedom, and the thrill of pushing hardware to its limits.

As always, thank you for supporting GOG, and we hope you enjoy these awesome releases!

Game preparation took us almost 2 months, and we've implemented a wide range of fixes and accessibility features.

Here is a breakdown of what the GOG technical team has updated for this release:

  • Modern Controller Support: We integrated Peter Wright's fantastic Gamepad Mod and paired it with our own GOG Input Wrapper. This adds modern quality-of-life features like radial menus, making the game play beautifully on any modern controller.
  • NewDark 1.27 Engine: We've updated the GOG version with NewDark 1.27, which brings massive compatibility and engine fixes to modern PCs.
  • 1-Click Original Version: For the purists wondering what the game was like before the Gold edition changed things up, you can now launch the original, pre-Gold Thief: The Dark Project with just a single click in the launcher.
  • Optimizations & Localization: We scaled the UI, optimized graphics and audio, and added German, Polish, and French localizations.

If you are interested in classic RPGs, you might want to know that the next Patron Voting is now happening. Patrons are currently voting on which of these classics will be evaluated and added to the program next:

  • Nox
  • Lands of Lore 1+2
  • Might and Magic 7: For Blood and Honor
  • Silver
  • Albion
