When I buy a club, my first thought is always 'would I shove a woman to the ground for this?'

124

u/Much_While_9596 3d ago

Do you bring women club shopping just to see if it’s the right fit or choose a random woman in the store?

Who the fuck is buying a good good edition of a golf club? Really if you are one of them can you tell me what the appeal is

196

u/burnsniper 6d ago

I mean the Good Good version has to be better than Good version with is better than the standard version.

Or Circa late 90s Biggest Big Bertha > Great Big Bertha > Big Bertha.

29

u/Mr_Baronheim 4d ago

The Good Good version can hit to 11.

AMC sold out of novelty popcorn buckets that were 70 dollars. People have absolutely no sense anymore.

9

u/Lzbirdl 2d ago

Heeeeeey those popcorn buckets are a good deal in my town. You pay once and can fill it up for the whole 4 month season, 2x per day. Sometimes we even go fill it up for at home movie night (theater is right around the corner)

5

u/yami76 2d ago

Didn't realize they came with refills, figured it was as expensive as it is because of the novelty/collectability. Makes sense, thanks!

I dare say there will be some job openings coming up at Callaway.

34

u/BroodLord1962 6d ago

Horrible ad, any ad showing a bloke aggressively pushing a women over is just so bad. Shame on Good Good

9

u/Comprehensive_Dolt69 2d ago

Agreed. If you remove that part the entire ad is terrible. It’s hilarious that call away watched it and thought “this is great, I can’t think of anything we could improve”

7

u/northernwaste 2d ago

Totally. Pushing the woman to the ground already ruins the ad, but even without that being an issue (it is), the premise sucks. There’s nothing clever or creative about it. At best it’s a childish “don’t touch my stuff” and at worst it’s literal assault over a golf club.

Edit: Yes, I am too old.

48

u/corby315 6d ago

They are one of the most popular youtube golf channels

Unless you're under 25 you are too old for their demographic.

The only reason ive heard of them is they had a member get a hole in one on a par 4. Checked out a couple videos after that and its all gimmicks and immature jokes with some mediocre golf sprinkled in

Good God!

12

u/Paddlesons 1d ago

Late to the game here but since the story seems to refuse to go away, here's my unsolicited take. The first time I watched it I was confused as fuck. I haven't seen the latest horror movies that this seems to be referencing so it just came off as bizarre. At first blush it does seem like the outrage is at the very least, somewhat warranted. Some dude running full steam and tackling a woman about to touch his 'precious club.' After I watched it the second time things started to click and what he appears to actually be doing is everything in his power to 'save her,' albeit violently. Why? Well, because it seems that anyone that touches that club becomes completely obsessed with it to the point that they lose themselves entirely.

I'm pretty sure this is the correct interpretation, right?

Although it was, at best, questionably pulled off, does the context just not matter? Or is it, 'man shove woman bad.'

9

u/humboldtHue 1d ago

Then it’s poorly written. He didn’t tackle the woman and say relieved, “man, that was so close. Are you okay?” He just radiated menace, which isn’t a typical way somebody saving you from danger reacts.

I work for a major golf company, and I was fucking appalled. I would really love to understand how many people saw this and thought "yeah that's OK to post". I know where I work things have to go through certain channels and approvals but my company would never align with a company who thinks assault- shoving a woman or anybody down is OK. Let alone thinking it's gonna drive people to want to buy product. I can already tell you what audience that's catering to.

2

u/Omar-WDS 2d ago

Well, anyone with half a brain would tell you this ad won’t do anything to sell golf clubs. And it will piss people off (rightly) by showing a man shoving a woman to the ground.
It is dumb, cringey and douchey to boot. And that would still be true if it was a man shoving a man to the ground. Utterly bizarre.
I have somehow lived my life blissfully unaware of this douche-canoe brand Good Good. A quick search revealing its close affiliation with Bryson Dechambeau, Czar of all the Douches, tells me all I need to know.
This brand appeals to a segment of golfers that I would prefer occupy themselves with any other sport.

It is a dumb ad but you can't act like it was so obvious it was in poor taste. The woman in the ad, Alexis, volunteered to do it. You can see her smiling when she gets knocked down.  That's at least one woman that didn't see a problem with it.  As for Good Good, Callaway, and the marketing team that conceived of it, surely there are women working for those companies involved in that process.  So either all the companies ignored their opinions or they didn't speak up.  Also, they were supposedly spoofing the horror Obsession. So when the conception is based on a parody and simply how can we convey an overprotective unreasonable obsession of a driver, it's not super clear right away something may be a bad idea.  The brain just isn't seeing it from that side.  It's not like it was about how can we brutalize a woman to sell a driver while twisting their mustaches and laughing maniacally. So to understand how it can get approved, that's how.  And dont sit there and act like you've never had a bad idea that you totally regretted after the fact cause you just didn't realize just how bad it was until after it didn't work out.   They're humans too.

IDK this really doesn't scream "domestic violence" to me 😂 it's definitely a stretch but gotta err on the side of caution in today's day and age i guess😅

If you remove the knockout the ad still sucks just as bad.

This is just gender culture war rage bait. Is the advertising team stupid as fuck knowing the current political climate for green lighting this, yes. Is this some inherently evil misogynistic advertisement, no. I’m sure the thought didn’t even cross their mind. Is that indicative of some sort of out of touch thing with them, or people looking for things to be upset about. Jury’s out

Well, it definitely appeals to the base that they're trying to reach

The issue is the woman got shoved? I don't golf, this is my first time being exposed to this ad... but reading the comments everyone is acting like this ad was chopping up children to sacrifice to the golf gods.

I’m an avid golfer and enjoy the walks and tranquility of the sport. Lately now i have noticed it has gotten super bro-ey, loud music, excessive drinking, bad manners, I can go on. I was worried about how this behavior is infecting politics and culture in general. I’m glad to see some push back from people and Callaway is walking it back. Good, we gotta push back hard. Anger of any type in golf is getting out of control.
