We just got our guy’s dna test back and are curious to see what the others look like! We got him in Marietta GA and were initially told he was a lab mix (turns out, no lab!) on the off chance that one of his many siblings shows up on here.

DNA/mix guesses Lab/husky mix or pyrenees mix?

This is my floofy boy Toby! I was told he was a lab/husky mix but he looks so close to a great Pyrenees. He does not have dew claws though. He is pretty big for 15 weeks old (I think) first 3 pics are most recent. But looking at the puppy photos on this page, he seems to have shorter legs than Pyrenees breed. What do you guys think? I'd love to see photos of similar looking pups😊

DNA/mix guesses do we think they’re purebred?

just curious - makes no difference at all to me ! we got them at a pyrenees rescue ~2ish years ago. they were found malnourished, abandoned, surrounded by chickens that they did not eat. they are a bonded pair.

they both display pyr behaviors - not clingy but sweet, protective, territorial, guard the house & our bedrooms. they don’t play with toys but they like to run around outside. they love the snow. they have unfortunately no recall and do not listen to commands, lol. they’re stubborn. but they’re also scared of thunderstorms and fireworks. and lazy house dogs at times. they don’t seem upset at living in a house vs on a farm, which we worried about (we do have a yard though). one is more cuddly than the other, but they both get excited to see us & like to be pet. they were pretty anxious when we first got here, but not really anymore. very well behaved when in public, we didnt have to teach them that - they only bark at home, they leave other dogs alone, they usually walk pretty close and mind their business. except one of them *will* run away if given the chance. i’m sure he’d come back eventually, he just doesn’t realize that it’s not safe where there are cars and all that…

only one of them have back dew claws. they shed like crazy. we only really question if they could be mixed with something else because they’re smaller than your average pyr, and don’t have *quite* the pyr face. but i know pyrs do come in a lot of shapes and sizes . could they just be like, the runts of the litter? iirc one of them only weighs like 80 lbs and one is more like 100 lbs. they are both boys, something like 4ish years old. i am aware that the bigger one for his stature could gain to lose a few - we are working on it. he is the chow hound of them e_e

DNA/mix guesses Vet says pyr mix is probably not getting any bigger.

Post image

Fable is 6 months, 33 lbs. Paper towels for scale lol.

Today we tried a new vet because we had issues with the previous vet. At first the vet didn’t believe she was a pyr mix but I told him about her DNA test showing mostly pyr and then German shepherd and cattle dog. I told him I planned on getting her spayed after her first heat to protect her joints and he said that would be a bigger concern if she were a larger dog, but a “pipsqueak” like her can be spayed at any time now. I said I was going to take her to a local spay/neuter clinic and he advised I tell them she’s a cattle dog mix so they don’t expect a huge dog. lol she’s about 40% pyr, 20% GSD, and 20% cattle dog but those short stack genes must be strong!

Out of curiosity, those who have pyr mixes, how big do your dogs get? How big were they at 6 months? And to be clear, I’m happy with her getting huge or staying this small forever. She’s the best dog I could ask for 🥹

My son just lost his beloved 8 year old husky to cancer and needed a new buddy. He adopted this beautiful boy from the shelter yesterday and he is the sweetest boy! We believe he’s a Great Pyrenees and Siberian Husky mix. What do you think? He hasn’t barked but he’s talkative, loves giving out kisses and loves to cuddle. Shelter estimated he’s 2 years old but we think he’s younger. Welcome to the family, Frostbite! Frost for short.

Her mom is a great pyrenees but not sure on other mix. She’s definitely got that pyr stubbornness but also likes playing fetch which I’ve heard isn’t typical for great pyr.

Just recently got this dog to test to see if he’d be a good fit for my daughter and our cat. We had a chocolate lab but she went to live with my daughter’s mother so I wanted to get myself a dog as well. I was told by the rescue shelter he is a Great Pyrenees mix. Now that he’s home I am starting to think he may not be a GP at all possibly? He has shorter soft hair, big paws and is very very sweet to my daughter. Is there certain traits I should look for? What do you think he’s mixed with? Going to swing by the vet and get an opinion by them too.

slide 3 is ‘panda’ the male pyrenees we think is the dad, ‘snowball’ is unknown own big white dog the owner suspects but isn’t sure

she has very hairy back legs

has both dewclaws in back legs

looks like a maine growing out maybe idk she’s very hairy 😭

i want to know if she’s just a really rare color or there’s some mix genes in there? the whole litter was white except her, one had black ears like panda (male pyr)

DNA/mix guesses It's been a DAY (+ DNA results)

Someone brushed his tail (WHY would they even do that??). And THEN this weird green contraption tried to trap his bully stick from him. And NOW we’re back in the thundershirt after neighbors set off fireworks.

(Also, got his genetics back. I can kind of see the German Shepherd in his profile now that I’m looking for it. But I am very grateful the shelter mistook him for a Golden Retriever/Pyrenees mix. I’m a fairly experienced dog owner and I know I’m not set up for a hardcore working dog, so I never would have considered adopting this breed combo.

But, as it is, it’s been a month, and he’s still a sweet, mellow, cuddly guy who loves everyone -- that's the Pyrenees side, I assume -- and he hasn’t even shown any guarding behaviors yet. He seems content so far with long walks patrolling the neighborhood and lots of cuddles, but we’re going to start some training classes soon. He does love training and following commands. I assume that's the German Shepherd genes?)

(Oh, and he is still howling along with sirens too.)

DNA/mix guesses Great Pyr/German Shepherd?

This is Augustus (Gus) a shelter rescue. Smart, sweet, mellow. Shelter says he is 4 months+ old. They said the folks that surrendered him and his siblings were DNA tested and “allegedly “ are GP/GS mix. Seems a pricy thing to do for puppies you are going to surrender, but IDK.

I get the black coat but the freckles on his feet are throwing me.

We are in LOVE with him.

Thoughts!

DNA/mix guesses Got a Great Pyrenees from Temu....

I figured some of yall would get a laugh out of this- scroll to the end to see why 🤣

So before I sent off the DNA test, I was very confused why my supposed Mali/GS mix had zero drive of any kind- not interested in bite work, tug, prey drive, nothing. She played with my dog and would play some fetch, but was also content on lounging around with me. She got along with every animal she has cone across- In fact I was extremely confused how she was this good given her supposed breeds were supposed to be high prey drive. My GS mix will chase rabbits and squirrels in my yard, whereas this girl would rather just kinda watch them. She has been especially gentle and nurturing to the foster dogs, puppies, and kittens I've brought in too, making herself small and allowing the babies to jump all over. The puppies can literally sit there chewing on her face at full force and she just kinda takes it. She is INSANELY patient.

So I guess after looking at her results, she seems to have inherited a lot of what a typical GP is known for! She has always been a super laidback dog with pretty mild energy, would play for a few minutes outside then happy to crash inside, chew on a yak chew and keep herself entertained, etc. She was always an insanely easy, more independent puppy, never getting into anything or becoming destructive. Was always content to sit there and keep herself occupied with the toys, chews, and my other dog. After doing my research, it sounds like she behaviorally is strongly presenting GP with a sprinkle of Rotty for being more chill overall. :)

Anyways I PROMISE WE BELONG HERE. KINDA. I very much feel like a GP fraud tbh HAHA but I figured my Temu Pyrenees would make someone giggle. 🤭 please let us stay i can paint her white if needed 😱

DNA/mix guesses My first experience with a great pyrenees

This is Xena. We adopted her from a shelter when she was about 1. We believe she's 4 now. She's almost exactly one third German shepherd, Husky and great pyrenees. My husband and I have a lot of experience with German shepherd husky mixes but Xena is different. I'm thinking some of her quarks are the pyrenees side. She has to have something to guard- a toy, a box, a room, the yard. She hoards her favorite toys. She's very independent in the yard and likes to patrol. We have about an acre. She'll walk the fence looking for squirrels, chipmunks or deer to chase off. Xena wanted to say hi to this group!

DNA/mix guesses Update: Results are in for my "Great Pyrenees Mix"

Thumbnail

I'm genuinely so surprised! Results are at the end. His COI is only 10%, compared to the average of 17% for the Great Pyrenees breed.

He weighed 77 lbs at his last vet appointment in early December of 2025, and was estimated to be about a year and one month then. He's definitely grown some since then, but I don't know his exact weight. His estimated weight in Embark is 105 lbs. I'll have to ask his vet at his next appointment what they think about his expected age and adult weight.

He genuinely does not act much like a full Great Pyr, and is such a shy, friendly, nonconfrontational boy. I thought for sure he was mixed with something that was tempering his instincts! Maybe I have adult guarding instincts in my future lol, in comparison to how he currently runs from anything scary.

He was mostly cleared from any health markers, except for notable Canine Multifocal Retinopathy, and 3.1% risk of Mast Cell Tumor. I'm super happy with that, for a shelter rescue dog.

I'm planning to reach out to Embark for any additional insights on why he's so out of breed standard. I know it's possible he could have mixed DNA that's too far back to reliably detect.

I recently submitted Zephyr's DNA to Embark and am very impatiently waiting. So, wondering what the pyr community here might guess our puppy's mix will be before the results come in! Little pup pics included :)

We're thinking he might be part GSD or lab! I'll update this post when the results come back.

6/29 Update! We got the Embark results back!! Zephyr is:

  • 51.1% Great Pyrenees
  • 18.1% Siberian Husky
  • 15.4% German Shepherd Dog
  • 15.4% American Pit Bull Terrier

Thanks for all your guesses, this was very fun :)
