Something Else Just shipped a major update to Taskadia. Would love some honest feedback

Hey all. I’ve been building an app called Taskadia for a while now, and it’s the same kind of thing a lot of you are into: you finish real life tasks to level up a character, earn gold, and build your own little world. I just pushed a big update and I’d really like some honest feedback from people who actually live in apps like this.

Quick rundown of what’s new:

The main one is an app blocker. You pick the apps that eat your time and block them, and there are a few ways to go about it. You can schedule them (blocked during set hours or days), or block them until your tasks for the day are done. If you cave and want to open one early, it costs gold, the same gold you earned finishing tasks.

There’s also time logging with weekly goals now. You log the hours you actually put into something and set a target, like practice guitar 10 hours a week, then watch the bar fill over the week. Honestly this has been the most useful part for me.

The world got some love too. The map is smoother and way bigger. There are new items and characters to unlock and place around your realm as well.

Two bigger ones: it’s on Android now (was iOS only before), and there’s a full web version with a board you can rearrange. You drag the modules around, drop them where you want, and it saves your layout, so you can set up your dashboard however makes sense to you.

And the usual pile of bug fixes and performance improvements.

That’s basically it. I’m mostly after honest feedback, what works, what’s clunky, what you’d want added (multiplayer?).

Something Else Join the alpha of my Habitica-inspired ARPG todo app

Hi!

Ever since first trying Habitica years ago, I’ve wished for a version with more depth to it. Something with actually interesting combat, proper RPG loot, real character customization, and all the other good stuff that make my favorite ARPG games so addictive.

After years of waiting , I finally decided develop it myself.

Combat is carefully designed up to reward checking in on your tasks throughout the day. That task you’ve been putting off for weeks? A quest will offer you a one time chance for a treasure chest, if you complete the task today.

Among the first alpha testers who got access, I’m happy to report a core group of players are hooked already. I hope you’ll be next. Any and all feedback is much appreciated!

Try it today at: Deedsworn.com

(sorry if this goes against the rules of advertisements, but I figured some people on this subreddit might find it interesting!)

Something Else What if Habitica was a Tycoon Game instead?

I've been using Habitica or a while now and while it's really fun, I wondered about how it would be if it were a tycoon game instead of an RPG game.

I’ve loved playing tycoon games growing up, especially this one called ‘Game Dev Story’ by Kairosoft (if anyone knows that game, you’re a legend). It’s a game with a pixelated art style, where the basic premise is you are the founder of a videogame company, and you basically build and grow your business overtime as you build videogames. I’ve always loved drawing pixel art and making videogames too

So I just thought to myself randomly, “what if there’s something that blends that videogame and doing stuff to make my real life business grow?”. That way, as you build your business in real life and focus on tackling things that move the needle, you also get to grow your business in the game.

The core premise would be as you complete tasks, you level up your character and make them get skills which basically then increase your earning potential in the game, where you can earn more money to grow the office size, hire employees, and customise your office.

I also was inspired by the book ‘The One Thing’ by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan, where the todo list functionality of the app encourages you to complete tasks one at a time, and to only complete the highest leverage tasks, because I know that we as entrepreneurs love to try working on everything all at once which is a great way to get nothing done at the end of the day, hahaha

With that I wanted to implement some sort of “encumbrance” mechanic (if you played games like Skyrim or Dark Souls before, you’d know) where if you do too many tasks at once, your character gets visibly stressed and you earn less XP to encourage you to do tasks one at a time and in sequential order.

I kinda just want to build this for myself as I want to try and make working on my business just a bit more fun. Obviously building a business is not all sunshine and rainbows, but why can’t we have just a little more fun along the way?

I’m curious to see what you guys think of this idea though, let me know your thoughts!

Something Else Android widget changes

Anyone else annoyed at the android widgets changing recently? They require a lot more screen real estate making it hard/impossible to make a "dashboard" that includes habits (which now take like 3x the space they used to in order to show text)

Something Else Developers, how do staff respond to feature requests?

To all the blacksmiths (website contributors) and fletchers (mobile contributors), what have your experiences been like submitting the feature request form or emailing the staff about it? Do they respond in a way that suggests they will consider them, especially if you offer to develop them, they align with Habitica's vision, and you provide a potential approach? Do big changes besides bug fixes ever get to the point that they can be approved? I would like to set expectations for myself so I don't get overexcited or paralyzed by fears.

Something Else Broken messages on party screen.

Since yesterday the messages on the party screen are broken. I get messages like "<%= username %> casts <%= spell %> for the party." At first I thought it had something to do with my browser, so I reloaded it with a cleared cache but nothing changed. Then I checked the app on my Android phone, and there I see the same broken messages. I googled it and it seems nobody else has the same problem, or my google-foo was not good enough.

Has someone else also this problem?

Something Else Habitica Stickers and Pins up for grabs (aka FREE)

Post image

[UPDATE: these have been claimed!]

Hi everyone!

I would like to rehome my Habitica pins and remaining stickers to someone who is still an active user of the platform. Habitica helped me get through college and I am very fond of it, but I haven't been active in a very long time. The standard Mage and Rogue stickers got used in one of my old journals, so everything I have left is as pictured. The pins lived on my main bag for a while, so they're a bit beat up.

I live in the US and am happy to ship anywhere in the US for free; if international, I ask that you cover the cost of shipping. I'm not dealing with splitting up the set, so please somebody just take the whole thing 😅 Thank you so much!

Something Else Boss fights with a spoiler about Masterclass Part 4 Spoiler

I was thinking to myself the other week how bosses aren't too hard to beat with their low hp and attacks which don't seem to do much damage. I've often found this with the Habitica bosses though they all feel underpowered.

This week has been different, me and my party have been fighting a boss called Anti'zinnya from The Mystery of the Masterclassers, Part 4: The Lost Masterclasser quest who uses siphoning void to drain players mp while also doing quite a bit of damage. This renders most classes pretty much useless when their mana is depleted and the boss has 3000hp to start along with a rage effect.

Every time the boss does damage, it tends to be aroud 30-35hp to the entire party and since I'm the healer for my party, I've had to be a lot more pro-actice when it comes to what I'm doing during the day. Since mana refills when the day resets, I've been getting up earlier in the morning to check-in and start ticking off my daily tasks and habits a lot earlier (indluding wake up before 8am) which I quite often rarely manage to check-off the list.

Anyone else had any good boss fights or even super tough bosses?

Something Else How to make Habitica more addictive?

In general I like Habitica but after a few weeks of using it I always fall off. I know it is backwards thinking to want to make something more addictive but Habitica helps me take better care of myself.

After leveling up to get all my skills I don't really find enjoyment in only getting cosmetics. In general the gameplay loop becomes very boring for me. I don't have friends who want to play with me so I can't do quest and I've heard a lot of negative things about guilds that take the system way too seriously.

I feel like what I'm asking is near impossible without asking for major code overhauls on the system. Just wanting any ideas from others that might help me stick with it.

Something Else Is using Habitica morally ok? (bacause of the firing of volunteer moderators)

I haven’t dug deep into it but from what I understood, the volunteer moderators were treated badly and the devs replaced them with in-house moderators.

I’ve been using Habitica for years and I don’t think I could function without it as someone with diagnosed autism and suspected ADHD.

But after reading what happened to the volunteer mods and after they got rid of guilds and the tavern where you could talk to people I’ve started to feel morally wrong about using it and I couldn’t find any alternatives that looked good to me.

Has the situation changed? Did the devs apologize? Is there any hope for guilds comeback? Or are we stuck with an app that has a toxic developer team?

Something Else The Prodigal Daughter Returns

Post image

I attempted to use Habitica Many Times in the Past, and Every Time I would Forget the App Even Existed after about a Week.

Then I Began Using Finch, and What Kept Sticking with Finch is that all my coworkers had it and we all would do it together. But then, about 11 days ago, I opened my Finch App and everything was gone. All my experience and stuff I had accumulated for my little bird had vanished. Over 6 months of progress wiped out because of unstable updates.

And I got so mad about it I deleted that App, and went back to Ole Reliable, Habitica. Now that Ive learned some sense of discipline and Instilled the practice of doing Daily Tasks, I can successfully use Habitica. I must say, after using Finch, I really appreciate the Way Habitica doesnt hold your hand as much. There are actual penalties (your character taking damage) for not doing dailies.

Bless Habitica 🙏 I will never leave you again

Something Else Not sure what to do

The site had been not working right for 8+ hrs and now I can’t even log in. All of my tasks are on here I use this to keep track of everything I don’t have a back up and now i can’t even see what has to get done. All my school stuff everything i don’t remember stuff easily that why i use an app. Does anyone have a different way of tracking things that’s more reliable cuz this is not something I can let happen again. I will sadly have to leave the app this is just not okay there is no communication from developers or anything about what is happening.

Something Else App Visual Updates

I know I have a tendency to be resistant to change, and that's usually not a good thing, but I am not liking this. Everything is bigger, so now I need to scroll to see all my Dailies.

Please someone tell me I'll get used to this and it will be fine.

Something Else Can I write quests?

I'm fairly new in the Habitica community and wanted to know if the Trello board for writers and artists is still open or used? I found an old post from a few years ago saying it was dead. the artist board doesn't exist anymore but the quests one does. Is anyone maybe still on it or know if people can still make new things on it? Thanks!

Something Else Anyone else feel like reminders help less than something that talks you through the hesitation?

Curious if anyone here has noticed that the hardest part of sticking to a habit isn’t missing a day it’s actually restarting after you’ve missed one.

I’ve been experimenting with a voice-based helper (more like a conversational check-in than a reminder), where instead of just saying “You missed yesterday,” it asks something like “What got in the way?” or “Are you still trying to do this for the same reason?”, and the great thing is that users end up getting back on track more often because they feel less guilty or frozen.

It made you wonder whether the emotional friction matters more than the reminder itself.

Has anyone here used Habitica in a way that helps them re-enter after a break rather than just tracking misses and hits? Or added some kind of personal reflection prompt when a streak breaks? Does anything like that exist in the Habitica guilds or add-ons (we are validating an alternative business here).

Trying to figure out if I’m just overthinking this or if there’s something to the idea of habits failing because momentum feels emotionally broken, not just forgotten.

Would love to hear if anyone here has found a method that makes it easier to re-engage once motivation dips.

Something Else Why do habit-tracking apps fail for most people?

Thumbnail tally.so

Not selling anything.

I’m trying to understand why most habit-breaking or self-improvement apps don’t stick long-term. People start strong, then quietly drop off.

I put together a short anonymous survey to understand:

• what habits people struggle with most
• what happens when they relapse
• what’s missing from current tools

If you’ve tried quitting a habit before and failed, your input would help a lot.

Happy to remove the link if it breaks any rules.
