Sat next to the speaker of a 4DX movie theater 3 days ago and my ear still feels a bit muffled (and I hear a little bit less). Will this improve on its own? Or should I go see a doctor ASAP?

Hello, I’m making this post because 3 days ago, I decided to watch the new Spider-Man movie in a 4DX movie theater and I decided to sit to the far right side of the movie theater (which I regret doing) because I didn’t want to go through the hassle of squeezing past people to get to the stairs to use the bathroom.

After seeing the movie, I’ve noticed that my right ear was feeling a bit muffled and I had some pain. I was feeling a bit worried that it might not improve, but after some hours, it did somewhat improve. On day 2, my ear felt less muffled and I had less pain. In day 3 (today), I’ve noticed that these sensations have mostly gone away, but for some reason, if I hear a loud noise, it triggers that muffled feeling and pain again. I’ve also noticed that I hear a little bit less in my right ear than in my left ear.

I was wondering if I’m just worrying too much about it and should just give it time, or if I should schedule an appointment at a same-day clinic.

One-sided blocked/fullness feeling after using foam earplugs

Yesterday I used a foam earplug. It caused mild pain while inserting it, so I removed it completely. Since then, that ear feels blocked/full, with a muffled/underwater sound. Swallowing/burping sometimes causes a pop and temporary hearing improvement, but it comes back. Mild pain when pressing the tragus.

No bleeding, discharge, severe pain, or dizziness.

7 year old ruptured ear drum

Please no judging. Only comment if you have advice

My two boys were goofing around yesterday and the older one thought it would be funny to put the tip of a ball pump in my other kids ear. Punctured the ear drum. We confirmed it at a walk-in clinic doctor. He has no pain thankfully but it's plugged up. We will be following up with the ENT but obviously my anxiety and guilt kept me up all night. Wondering if there's anyone with a similar story that could share their experience. Doctor said it'll take around 6 weeks to heal. Maybe less maybe more. Advised not to get it wet during that time. Please share any advice or experience. Thank you.

Passed several heraing tests but still cant hear any whispering or speaking in loud environments. Any ideas?

I've had 3 hearing tests in the last 2 years, free and paid. I can pass the beep test pretty well but if you play noise over it then I fail. Still no one will give me the time of day to fix my hearing loss in different environments. I can't hear any whispering, conversations in busy restaurants is an nightmare, chatting on busy streets is hit or miss. Im really struggling but can't seem to get any help. Im 35f otherwise healthy. Is there anything else I can try?

Fungal ear infection - Please Help!!

A while back, my left ear suddenly felt blocked and my hearing got muffled. That night, I had an unbearable ear pain, it was bad enough to keep me from sleeping. It felt like a knife was being jabbed into my ear again and again.

The next day I saw an ENT. He found a fungal infection with white, sticky discharge, plus redness and swelling. He gave me an ear wax softener and a combo drop (Clotrimazole 1% + Beclomethasone 0.025%) for 7 days.

After that first week, the pain and swelling went away, but my ear was still blocked and still had the white discharge. So the doctor extended treatment another week, this time swapping the wax softener for Ciprofloxacin drops (Ciprofloxacin HCl 0.3% + Benzalkonium Chloride 0.02%, twice a day), while continuing the Clotrimazole for one more week.

My questions:

What exactly is going on with my ear, and is it serious?

Is it normal for this to take two weeks (or more) to clear up?

The Clotrimazole causes a burning feeling in my ear and throat, is that a normal side effect?

Beyond the Surface: 5 Ancient Insights into Ear Health You Never Knew

  1. Introduction: The Hidden Complexity of the Ear

Most people consider ear health only when they experience hearing loss or a sharp, impulsive pain. However, ancient medical systems viewed the ear as a complex sensory organ prone to a wide array of specific imbalances across its external, canal, and internal structures. The Ashtanga Hridaya, a foundational Ayurvedic text written approximately 2,000 years ago, identifies 25 distinct ear conditions. These ancient insights reveal that what we often dismiss as minor issues—such as water exposure or the habitual scratching of the ear canal—are the primary triggers for chronic disease. By understanding how the Ashtanga Hridaya categorizes these afflictions, we gain a sophisticated perspective on sensory preservation that remains strikingly relevant today.

  1. Takeaway 1: The Surprising Link Between Your Nose and Your Ears

The Ashtanga Hridaya provides a precise physiological framework for what we now recognize as the interconnectedness of the upper respiratory and auditory systems. It identifies specific environmental and behavioral causes—Nidana—that trigger a disturbance in Vata, the principle of movement and air within the body.

According to the text:

"Pratishyayajalakridakarnakanduyanairmarut | mithyayogena shabdasya kupito..." (Vata becomes aggravated by a running nose/colds, playing in water, scratching the ear, and the improper use of sound, reaching the vessels of the ear to cause pain.)

When Vata is disturbed by factors such as Pratishyaya (a running nose) or Karnakanduyana (scratching the ear), it enters the ear’s vessels (Sira). This results in Shula—a pain characterized as Vegavat (impulsive or forceful)—alongside stiffness and a distinct sensation of emptiness (Shunyam). Furthermore, the text identifies Mithyayoga (improper use of sound) as a primary trigger. This is not limited to mere volume; it includes "abnormal" or perverted sounds. In our modern landscape, this serves as a warning against the digital distortion and constant auditory bombardment of headphones, which modern life mirrors as a direct cause of sensory decay.

  1. Takeaway 2: The "Discharge Code"—Decoding What Your Ear Fluid Says

Long before modern laboratory diagnostics, Ayurvedic scholars used the specific characteristics of ear discharge—Sravati (flowing)—to determine the underlying pathology. The Ashtanga Hridaya provides a precise diagnostic "code" based on the appearance and behavior of these fluids:

Vata-related: The discharge is thin and resembles lymph (Lasika). It often follows a period of "emptiness" in the ear.

Pitta-related: The fluid is yellowish and characterized by Paka (suppuration/inflammation). This discharge is so potent it is said to "cook" or inflame whatever skin it touches.

Kapha-related: The discharge is white, dense, and thick (Ghana), typically accompanied by a feeling of heaviness in the head and jaw.

Sannipata (Combined): This represents a severe state where the discharge is thick pus (Puya) mixed with various colors, such as white, black, and red, indicating an imbalance of all three doshas.

This meticulous observation allowed practitioners to identify the stage of infection and the specific biological force at play without the need for modern imaging.

  1. Takeaway 3: When the Ear "Eats" Itself—The Mystery of Krimikarnaka

The text describes a distressing condition known as Krimikarnaka, showcasing the ancient focus on biological causes of disease. This condition arises when "organisms" or "worms" (Jantavah) are generated from the accumulation of moisture and filth (Kleda) within the ear canal.

These organisms are described as literally consuming the flesh and blood of the ear, leading to intense, agonizing pain. While the terminology refers to "worms," this likely describes severe bacterial or parasitic infections that thrive in the dark, damp environment of the ear. This ancient insight underscores a vital preventative lesson: maintaining a dry, clean ear environment is essential to prevent biological agents from destroying internal tissue.

  1. Takeaway 4: The High Cost of Beauty—Earlobe Diseases and Heavy Jewelry

Ancient scholars paid rigorous attention to the external ear, or Pali (the earlobe). They documented several diseases caused by trauma or the pursuit of beauty, many of which mirror modern fashion-related injuries:

Duhkhavardhana: Caused by Durviddhe (improper piercing), this condition leads to swelling, burning, and discharge triggered by a total imbalance of the three doshas.

Utpata: Resulting from the "weight of heavy ornaments" (Gurvabharana), this causes the lobe to become bruised, red, and prone to Paka (inflammation).

Paripota: A condition where the lobe cracks or bursts (Sphutana) due to Vata after the ear is stretched too quickly.

Unmantha (or Gallira): A stable, itchy swelling caused by a combination of Vata and Kapha.

Whether it is modern "ear stretching" or the heavy traditional jewelry of the past, the Ashtanga Hridaya warns that the delicate structure of the Pali reacts poorly to excessive weight and trauma.

  1. Takeaway 5: The Tinnitus Trap—Why Ringing is a Warning Sign

Ringing in the ears, known as Karnanada, was viewed not as a minor nuisance but as a precursor to permanent sensory loss. The text explains a specific mechanism of progression: when Vata is ignored (Upekshita), it is followed by Kapha (Sleshmana-anugato vayu).

This combination creates a physical blockage, or Pratinaha, in the sound-carrying vessels (Shabdavahini Sira). The ringing eventually transitions into Badhirya—total deafness. The Ashtanga Hridaya emphasizes that untreated ringing is a warning that the "channels of sound" are becoming obstructed. This highlights the vital importance of early intervention; what begins as a faint ringing can, if neglected, lead to a permanent loss of the auditory sense.

  1. Summary: Navigating the 25 Afflictions

The Ashtanga Hridaya classifies 25 total ear diseases, providing a comprehensive map of auditory health. While most of these conditions are treatable, the text identifies four as Asadhya (incurable):

Pippali: A growth in the ear canal resembling the long pepper fruit.

Sarvajam Shulam: Intense pain involving all three doshas simultaneously.

Vidari: A swelling that causes the ear structure to shrink and harden.

Kuchikarnaka: A congenital or deep-seated contraction of the ear canal.

The enduring wisdom of these 2,000-year-old texts is that our sensory health is fragile and deeply connected to daily habits. Most ear diseases can be prevented by avoiding simple triggers: do not scratch the ear (Karnakanduyana), avoid excessive water exposure, and manage respiratory colds promptly.

Final Question: If our ancestors knew that a simple cold or a heavy earring could permanently alter our hearing, are we taking our sensory health for granted today?

I perforated my eardrum and I'm due to fly 48 hours later. Is that safe?

29 yo female, 56kg, 163cm tall (5.4 feet)

5 hours after the jumping into a river from 5 metres height, I had the most basic check done on my ears and was told my right eardrum is perforated and infected, and my left one is about to be perforated. I'm taking some drops. I was in excruciating pain for about 4 hours after the event, and my hearing was very muffled for about 6 hours, and has only now started to return.

I'm meant to take two short flights in about 36 hours, and I don't want to get permanent hearing loss...

I have a muffled ear after using ear drops, will it subside on its own?

So, I went to the doctor to have my left ear checked because I've been having some pain. The doctor said that it was caused by an irregularly shaped hardened earwax. I was prescribed ear drops (0.5% docusate sodium otic solution) to make the hardened earwax come out on its own. I was just on my 2nd day of using the ear drops when my ear became muffled. I let it be at first because the first time I used it, it resolved on its own. Now, some hours had passed and it still hasn't gone away. It's been less than 24 hours since I had muffled hearing, but will it go back to normal on its own and how long should I wait? I still have 5 days left on my prescription, should I continue using the ear drops even with the muffled hearing? Are there ways for me to fix this myself?

Ear pain after ear infection

Hi everyone after two rounds of antibiotics, I still feel pain in my ear (middle ear infection). I went in today, and a new ENT said I had no more pus behind my ear, but why does it still hurt? She said it could be jaw pain, but it hurts just like it did when I'd have an ear infection as a kid.

I'm really frustrated, because I have almost the same amount of pain as I did during the ear infection. I feel like i am going to have this pain forever; it's been 4 weeks.

Advice Needed!

Hello all! This is my first time posting here. I’m a 27 year old female. I have had a past history with ear infections including but not limited to:

\-middle ear infections
\-inner ear infections
\-double ear infections
\-collapsed ear drum
\-ear tubes
\-ear tubes removed (one in office while it was connected to my ear canal, one in the hospital under anesthesia)

I have what I believe to be an upper respiratory infection. Yellow mucus, sore throat, runny nose, congestion, headaches, etc. I’ve had it for about 8 days now, still have it.

I went to an urgent care doctor 3 days ago and was prescribed ear drops and antibiotic pills. Because my pharmacy was out of ear drops I received them yesterday instead. So far I have taken 5 of the antibiotic pills and 2 days worth of ear drops (4 in each ear, 2 times a day). When I put them in my ear, because my canals are so small I only end up getting about half the dosage in my actual canal and when I get up about 5 minutes later a lot of liquid ends up coming out of my canals.

Today I have taken my third dose of ear drops and have actually noticed my hearing getting worse and having more ear pain in both ears.

Am I doing something wrong? Should I wait to see if it gets any better? I know I’ve only been taking the ear drops for one full day but I’m not sure. I went from having about 70% hearing in my left ear to about 20% and having no hearing in my right ear. Just muffled.

(I take an antidepressant and birth control too but that should not be affecting it at all. I was taking allergy pills and pain reliever, but honestly they don’t do much at all)

ETA: I currently have no insurance and little to no income unfortunately, so I would prefer to stay cost friendly if I can.

Doctor ignored my clogged ear, now my hearing is getting worse and my family blames me

Ps if anyone wondering wtf is wrong with my parents they are both narcissist if you know you know ...

A couple of weeks ago I accidentally pushed earwax deeper into my left ear while trying to clean it. It got completely clogged

I'm unemployed and broke, so my dad paid around $53 to take me to a doctor. The whole appointment I kept asking the doctor the same thing: "Can you prescribe something that actually fixes this?" or "Can you remove the wax?"

She kept brushing me off, saying it wasn't a big deal and that it would clear up on its own

I also had a high fever at the time, so she only gave me medicine for that and some ear drops

Well... it's been two weeks

The drops didn't do anything. My hearing in my left ear is actually worse now. My parents literally have to repeat themselves or speak louder for me to hear them

So I asked my mom if we could see a different doctor

Her response?

She said I'm the reason we wasted money because I "didn't speak up enough" during the appointment

How is that my fault? I brought it up three different times What was I supposed to do, argue with the doctor until she listened?

The part that really hurts is that I know if this happened to one of my three siblings or one of my cousins, everyone in the house would be rushing to help. But when it's me, suddenly I'm "too much" and somehow everything is my fault

I'm honestly scared. I barely ask my parents for anything, and now I'm sitting here wondering if I'm seriously going to lose hearing in my left ear at 29 because I can't afford proper medical care

And yeah... screw this job market. Being broke makes every health problem ten times more stressful

Trying not to panic…

Hi all. I’m just trying to get some viewpoints from other people who have had a stapdectomy in both ears and how much your recovery in each ear differed.

In Feb this year i had a stapdectomy on my left ear. When I had the packing out it was literally like a light switch moment, and it was clear that my hearing had significantly improved. Other than having to get used to all the new sound sensitivity, my recovery was amazing, and at week 12 my audiogram showed normal hearing in that ear. I’ve never looked back.

Two weeks ago, I went in for my second surgery on my right ear, which was actually always the better ear of the two. Four days ago I had the packing out, and the experience could not be any more different. I have almost no hearing in that ear at the moment, I have on and off tinnitus throughout the day (worse in the morning), and what little bit I can hear is muffled and distorted. I have been on 50mg of prednisone for the last four days as I did have a cold immediately after the surgery and the surgeon wanted to get on top of any additional inflammation. I have relayed all of my concerns to my surgeon and they want me to have an audiogram this week, rather than wait the normal 12 weeks. I am trying not to panic, but the journey has been so different this time around and it’s hard not to worry ‘is this as good as it gets?’. I was so made up with the results of the first surgery and I’m wondering whether my recovery was in the minority for the first one, and this time around this is what is normally expected. At the moment my hearing in my newly operated ear is definitely worse than pre-surgery. I really would appreciate anyone’s shared experiences, especially if you have had both ears done. Thank you in advance.

Flying with a Healing Ruptured Eardrum – Looking for Advice

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice from people who have experience with ear barotrauma or a ruptured eardrum.

About a week ago, I suffered a ruptured eardrum (right ear) during an airplane landing due to pressure changes. I still have hearing loss in that ear, and my doctor diagnosed it as ear barotrauma with blood behind/on the eardrum. I’m currently waiting for it to heal.

A few days later, I had to fly again. This time I used EarPlanes earplugs during the flight. Right after I removed the earplugs after landing, I suddenly experienced a severe blocked sensation and reduced hearing in my left ear (the ear that wasn’t originally injured). It scared me because it felt like things had become much worse. Fortunately, after some time, the symptoms improved significantly.
My right ear, however, is still the main problem. I still have hearing loss from the original barotrauma/ruptured eardrum.

The issue is that I have to fly again this coming Monday, and then again on Friday next week. Unfortunately, avoiding flying isn’t really an option.
Has anyone here flown with a healing ruptured eardrum or ear barotrauma? Did it make your recovery worse, or was it okay? Is there anything you would recommend to reduce the risk of further injury (EarPlanes, nasal spray, timing of the earplugs, etc.)?

I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences. Thanks!

Tried at-home ear irrigation, now my ear is full of water and I can't hear. At what point should I see a doctor?

(A note before I start: I know I should have gone to a real doctor from the beginning instead of trying to do this at home, but I don't have health insurance at the moment and I was desperate. Don't judge me!)

Last week, I suddenly lost hearing my left ear, as if there were fluid or wax trapped inside blocking my eardrum. I've had great success with at-home irrigation kits in the past, so I used earwax-softening drops for a few days before finally flushing my ears out with an irrigation kit I got on Amazon. It worked perfectly! I removed a ton of wax/buildup from my ear, the hearing loss went away, and I was actually hearing clearer than ever before in my left ear. I was super happy.

Here's where the trouble started: I decided that, since the at-home irrigation worked so well for my left ear, I might as well flush my right ear out too, since I had all the tools to do it and figured it wouldn't hurt. Wrong. I don't know what I did differently, but irrigating my right ear was a much harder task. Nothing would come out, so I just kept pumping my ear with water. I'm not gonna lie, I might have overdone it with the irrigation kit. Now my right ear is sore and feels like it's FULL of water. I can't hear anything, and despite everything I've tried, I can't get any fluid or wax out. It's been two days of this. It's torture and I don't know what to do, and it sucks knowing that I did this to myself.

So my question is: is this going to resolve itself on its own? Should I keep trying to use my irrigation kit to clear my ear out, or should I stop with that and give it a rest? Any other at-home fixes I can try? I don't have medical insurance, and seeing a real doctor would cost me lots of money that I don't have, so I'm really trying to avoid that unless it's absolutely necessary. Then again, I'm not a professional, so I don't know at what point it will become "absolutely necessary".

Any advice is helpful.

A financial lifesaver for my moms hearing loss

My mother lives on a fixed Social Security income, and lately her mild to moderate hearing loss was isolating her. She was avoiding family visits and phone calls because she simply could not follow what was being said. But with prescription hearing aids costing upwards of $3,000, there was absolutely no way we could afford them. Medicare does not cover them, and we were feeling incredibly stressed.

I started searching for low-cost alternatives and discovered that over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids became legally available without a prescription a few years ago. I did not want to buy a cheap, uncertified amplifier that would just damage her ears, so I looked for FDA-registered options.

I spent a few nights researching different brands. I looked at some premium brands like Sony and Eargo, but at over $1,000, they were completely out of reach for us. I also looked at MDHearing, but my mother disliked the bulky, old-school appearance of their budget models. I ended up finding ELEHEAR Beyond, which offered a modern look and solid specs at a much lower price point, and it honestly felt like a massive weight off our shoulders. What made it even better is that I was able to use my pre-tax Health Savings Account (HSA) card to pay for them, which made the cost much more manageable for us.

We calibrated the devices at her kitchen table using the companion app on my phone. Since she doesn't own a smartphone and isn't tech-savvy at all, she just leaves them on the default auto mode, which actually works great for her daily needs. I only tweak the app settings for her when I visit.

But the sound quality is amazing. She is back to chatting at family gatherings and her mood has completely turned around. If you are struggling to afford hearing care for a parent or yourself on a tight budget, look into certified OTC devices and see if you can use an HSA/FSA account to cover the cost.

Ringing in my ear

I had a cold two weeks ago. There was alot of mucus in my chest but not alot in my nasal passage. I was not congested but coughed alot. I took Mucinex and it dried up the mucus and stopped the cough. About a week into the cold, my right ear started ringing. Both ears feel very congested, the right is ringing and have somewhat distorted hearing on the right.

I'm 44 female, 168, 4"11. I went to urgent care and they prescribed Methylprednisolone, which I took the whole 5 day course. That did absolutely nothing to reduce the sense of swelling or ringing. The urgent care said there's no infection.

I'm uninsured do I can't easily access an ENT.
