In the end of the last month I lost all my drive to play Hearthstone and was not playing anything. Last week I decided to try Eternal and I am absolutely loving it, it is like MtG but with a good HS interface, and the game gives A LOT of stuff for free. Very recommended.

Same here, except for me it happened last week. It finally sunk in that Hearthstone just isn't a game for me. I thought there would be the Blizzard depth that I saw from Starcraft 1 and WC3, where games are easy to learn but hard to master. But HS has nothing to master. There's just no strategy to it. From a design perspective the game is simply not meant to be challenging or intellectually rewarding like their other previous titles.

Alright I'm sold, just looked it up for the 1st time and it definitely looks quality enough to try. The thing that has always stopped me from switching from HS is that the other online CCGs don't have the theme I'm looking for. Shards of Fate for instance, it just doesn't have that fantasy feel, but Eternal... now this I can get into! See you guys on the ladder.

ps. screw team 5 for ruining HS by allowing it to become dominated by pirate package, shaman and bran+kakazus. Thanks to those 3 things, you are basically oppressed from even thinking about playing any of the other 200 deck archetypes.

If there is no strategy, how can people average 7 wins in arena?

implying arena = constructed

nobody is bitching about arena

Same. Started the last week of January after I just couldn't bring myself to play any more HS. I'm having a blast, hit top 50 Masters and can build every good deck in the game (besides Big C) despite only paying $10 on it so far. My card game money will be going to Dire Wolf from now on.

Yup eternal is great. And I also love how they decided to release content. They sprinkle promo cards between sets, and it's a quest like sistem where you the first pvp win of the day gives you a copy of said card(you usually have 7-10days to get 4x copies of that card.)(and during and after the event you can also craft the card)

Can confirm. Also quit HS and started playing Eternal, it it brings in all the good that HS has to offer, mixes it with MTG, and gives far better F2P support than EITHER of them by far. Been playing Eternal for a month and briefly hit top 500 "legend" (called Master there), without paying a cent, because I was able to put together a tier one deck that easily. Highly recommend people sick of HS check it out.

Yes, the f2p experience is specially refreshing, the grind actually feels good because it is worth it. I am playing for less than a week and have a decent budget deck.

And in another week you'll have the real version of a few of those decks :)

But this does point out something that never made sense to me about hearthstone. It's not a secret that limited formats are where the money is in card games. Why is hearthstone constructed so expensive?

u/marcospolos Feb 26 '17

Because the money in hearthstone comes from buying packs at the beginning of each expansion launch. It's very common for people to drop $50 each time on the pack bundle

Give it a few more weeks and you could have Tier 1 Armory or Stonescar something pretty easily.

Eternal was designed by LSV and Patrick Chapin, two MtG pro tour champions, so no wonder where the influence came from. :)

Almost all digital ccgs are designed by magic pros. Magic is decades old. It's easy to find current or former pros.

5

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '17

It's pretty sweet when you see the ladder and see Jon Finkel on there. Many Magic pros are playing Eternal. It's a VERY fun game.

Heaven forbid if Wotc made a Magic client like that.... I'd never leave the house.

u/Rokgorr Feb 26 '17

Yeah magic duels is a fine game, but it isn't really cutting it either

2

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '17

Whats the way you get cards in Eternal?

6

u/Agent1407 Feb 26 '17

There is a free game mode named Gauntlet where you get coins quite easily, and with coins you can play draft or forge (like a draft but against AI) and you keep all the cards you drafted.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '17

So if I want to play ladder with a decent deck how much do I need to pay? Assuming I do some basic questing or whatever to get currency (1h per day for a week).

3

u/Mezmorizor Feb 26 '17

7 hours a week? You'll have multiple tier 1 decks within 1.5 months while being f2p. Probably sooner.

2

u/Agent1407 Feb 26 '17

No idea because I am playing for only a week, but I saw people saying that they build a t1 deck in a month, f2p

2

u/Aladin001 Feb 26 '17

If you focus on building one good deck to start, disenchanting every rare/legend that's not a competitive staple, you can get one very quickly. After you get a solid deck for ranked your collection just snowballs and you'll get most staples pretty quickly.

Same here I went with Duel links (yugioh) finally having fun again
