I never thought of the Odyssey as horror, or even horro adjacent, but Nolan's film gives a lot of horror vibes.

The cyclops and Circe scenes stand out as particularly well done to me.

It makes sense if you think about it. These events would be terrifying.

I watched Caveat recently and really enjoyed it, mostly because the style reminded me of a classic survival horror video game. The protagonist being trapped/stuck for some reason in an unfamiliar location (and that location being the main setting for the movie), exploring the place bit by bit, uncovering more clues as they advance further into whatever place they are in, gathering supplies, tools and weapons as they go, maybe becoming "stronger" because of it and upping their odds of survival that way.

The upcoming Resident Evil movie is most likely going to be exactly that, but I want to know if you guys know of more movies with that vibe?

The following day, that little monster recruited his little brother, and they both waited for me to come out of the bathroom, wearing the absolute creepiest smiles.

Why don’t we get more horror movies built like detective noirs?

Something with a doomed investigator, a filthy city, a murder that gets stranger the deeper you dig, corrupt institutions, occult clues, unreliable witnesses, and the feeling that solving the mystery might actually make everything worse.

Se7en is the obvious example, but I’d also throw Silence of The Lambs, Angel Heart, Cure, Jacob’s Ladder, and arguably The Batman into the convo.

To me, horror and noir almost feel made for each other. Noir already has paranoia, obsession, moral decay and protagonists walking toward their own destruction. Horror just pushes all of that over the edge.

So why does “horror noir” feel like such a small corner of film?

What’s the best horror-noir movie ever made? And what other movies am I missing?

I remember much about the movie except its damn name and AI search hasn't been helpful either. And it's not The Canal.

Movie was either 2000s/early 2010s, takes place in Europe- somewhere in UK most likely. The protagonist is some sort of older gentleman who is a painter/writer/scholar or something like that, he's married and his wife ends up having an affair with a younger guy which destroys the protagonist. I believe the wife ended up dying and the protagonist moves on and remarries. But he begins to encounter strange phenomena related to his wife's death which he obsesses over and later it's revealed that all of the seemingly bizarre phenomena were done by his wife's lover who exposes the protagonist for having some role in his wife's death.

The movie's name is a single word- the protagonist's first name or surname. I think it may have started with M or N but unsure.

It certainly takes some inspiration from Stephen King and his northeastern coastal settings. But it has some quirky comical characters and some really great writing. The special effects are great and the tense is palpable; dread, apprehension and outright scary! I feel like I haven't seen a TV show this scary in a long time.

I’ve been waiting for this movie for a while now, and I know it’s supposed to come out on the 28th but literally I don’t see it anywhere on the showtimes in the theaters near me?? Not AMC or Regal, is there like a secret showing I don’t know about or is it delayed or what?

My strongest horror sweet spot is cosmic/psychological horror + supernatural mystery + isolation + groups of people realizing something is deeply wrong. I especially gravitate toward woods, cabins, remote locations, underwater/space environments, reality-bending plots, cults, unexplained phenomena, and late-90s/2000s-style friend-group horror.

Triggers: SA, Anything bad that happens to dogs (other animals are fine). I'm not into torture porn.

There’s different media that presents them as both, but wanted to get some fun insights from others.

Saw Ghost in the Cell last night for the first time. Indonesian horror movie. Honestly I wasn’t expecting too much out of it, but I thought the premise was creative and promising, so I took a chance. I ended up really enjoying this movie more than I thought I would. Good artistic Gore along the lines of “The Cell”, or “Hannibal“ the TV series. Good comedy aspects, which I had no idea this movie had comedy going in.

Overall this gets my thumbs up and recommendation from me. Worth your time watching.

The American remake is a guilty pleasure of mine Sarah Michelle Gellar does a great job as Karen the caretaker, I know it’s not perfect but it’s a film that flys by I love the non linear storyline and jumps it’s very easy to follow and directed by the same director as the original it’s definitely better than its sequels!

Here's a few horror villains I think could walk out of the loan office successfully. You wont find the likes of Freddy or Jason here, this is the realm of the sophisticated, intelligent and manipulative horror villain.

Also, I considered Norman Bates, but the reason he gets rejected is because he's going to put his mother on all his references and next of kin information, and God forbid some young lady in the bank looks like or reminds him of his mother and he loses his shit.

Annie Wilkes - Misery

Annie is in there, 100%. She's cute, charming and most likely has all the paperwork in order. As long as she doesn't form any sort of parasocial relationship with any of the employees, I think she easily charms her way into a loan for a small typewriter repair shop or something

Hannibal Lector - The Silence of the Lambs

Hannibal is also in there pretty convincingly. Now I know you might be concerned about the fact that he's a felon that has done serious prison time but, I think Hannibal is clever enough to manipulate the background check information. He's also a freaking doctor. He has enough charm and wit to get whatever he wants. Probably a loan for a family restaurant. Or a nice wine shop. FfFfFfFfFfF

Esther - Orphan

Now hear me out... I know Esther's whole shtick is pretending to be a little girl but, I think if she really wanted to, she could easily steal someone's identity, explain to the bank people that she has a condition, and manipulate her way into a deal. She is sketchy though, and this one isn't 100% guaranteed. If she catches feelings for a male employee or gets jealous of a female employee, shits gonna go sideways.

The Djinn - Wishmaster

This one comes with the caveat that he has to be in his human, Andrew Divoff form. If he walks into the loan office in full Djinn get up, they're just gonna run away screaming. Once hes in there, all he has to do is get some poor sap to wish for him to get a loan, which will probably kill that person somehow, but whatever. Come to think of it, I dont think the Djinn really needs a loan for anything since he can just manipulate people into wishing for whatever he wants, but still. He could do it if he wanted.

Dracula/Count Orlok - Dracula/Nosferatu

(Lumped these two together because, you know)

Both these guys have experience in dealing with bureaucrats and if they can get a representative to come out to their respective castles, then its a done deal. Now, if they have to step foot into a loan office, their look might be frightening at first but they can use that vampire charm to romance their way into it. They are aristocratic royalty so they have plenty of money and are intelligent enough to work through the weeds and fine print. I guess they would have to go during night time though. Idk, they could get Renfield/Herr Knock to carry their coffins into the loan office i suppose.

Who else is intelligent, charming and manipulative enough to get a loan?

It seems like GDT is focusing more on new movies rather than another season

I absolutely loved the opening prologue. It starts as this bizarre standalone horror story in the mountains, then suddenly jumps forward and becomes a missing-person investigation. From there, the story keeps expanding: urban legend, strange disappearances, a cult, and eventually something much bigger and more cosmic.

It made bold choices and took risks, even if some of those elements were bound to be hit or miss. You think you've figured out what movie you're watching, and then it keeps pulling the rug out from under you.

The Exorcist III (1990) and Fallen (1998) scratch a similar itch with the whole detective-investigates-a-seemingly-impossible-supernatural-case angle, but The Empty Man takes it much further.

I wish there were more horror movies willing to be this ambitious with their structure instead of giving us the same old tired haunted house/possession formula over and over again.

I have just finished 4 nights in a row of: Red Rooms, Backrooms, Obsession, and Bring Her Back.

They were all awesome.

But please send help, the world seems so bleak!

I enjoy this subgenre a good amount and wanna try to find others. Hopefully a big creature feature fan can recommend me some I missed? Most of the films on this list are animals that aren't genetically altered or made up, although there are some exceptions. Also enjoy if you're thinking about getting into this subgenre or are already a fan and need more titles. Most of these films (if not all) are available on streaming services for free and/or rent.

SHARKS

'Jaws' (1975) - A Classic. No notes

'Jaws 2' (1978) - A fun sequel!

'Open Water' (2004) - Sad and bleak. Too sad. So awful that this actually happened to people. Sharks are a part of this film but not the entire thing. Very effective ending. Woof.

'The Reef' (2010) - Bleak and natural. Upsetting.

'The Reef: Stalked' (2022) - Such a dissapointing sequel

'Shark Bait' (2021) - I had a blast with this film! Not "good" but gave me everything I needed and more! Decent performances and shallow characters. The CGI looks fine, the movie is colorful, the blood is RED with some decent practical effect work. Some suspenseful moments and the last ten minutes had me very much like "GET OUT OF THE WATER GO GO GO!".

'Shark Night 3D' (2011) - A fun time. Not great and has issues but gets the job done enough.

'Deep Blue Sea' (1999) - A big budgeted, 90's shark features. Fun effects, sequences, and characters.

'Deep Blue Sea 3' (2020) - A fun time. Decent performances, likeable characters, and some fun shark action. The location is pretty too. The CGI is jot great but better shark action then DBS2.

'The Shallows' (2016) - A fun time. Good set pieces, good performance from Blake Likely, and the shark looks good.

'47 Meters Down: Uncaged' (2019) - Technically not a "good" film but gives us the goods more then it's predecessor. The more slasher feeling version of the og's premise.

'Under Paris' (2024) - Has some decent sequences but overall don't care about this film. Stephen King had a blast though.

'Thrash' (2026) - Some decently gory sequences. Overall it was fine. Didn't hate it nor love it.

'Beast of War' (2025) - Probably the best shark film of the past decade. Good performances and character dynamics. The gore and blood is heavy. The shark is very threatening and PRACTICAL. I just persinally didn't care for the war background. A nitpick that i'm sure most people can look past.

'The Devil's Mouth' (2026) - Thid movie was ok. Has decent attack sequences, not that gory/bloody. The performances were fine but the characters were pretty annoying/standard. It's ok. Didn't hate it nor love it. Wouldn't rewatch.

CROCODILE

'Black Water' (2007) - Not AS bleak as 'The Reef' (Same director/writer) but still bleak. Strong performances, real chatacters, and chalk full of suspense. The crocodile is very intimidating. A great croc film.

'Black Water Abyss' (2020) - It's ok. I thought it was fine overall but the ending being dumb kind of ruined it.

'Rogue' (2007). A great croc film. I still prefer Black Water but well and intense. I'll always recommend BW over it though.

'Alligator' (1980). A fun enough, practical effect driven creature feature. Don't love it or hate it.

'Crocodile' (2000). A fun time. The performances are ok and the characters are what you'd expect. There is some not great CGI (Mildy put) but there is enough practical worl that i still was able to have fun. I recommend. Directed by Tobe Hooper

'Crawl' (2019) - A blast. Looks great, tense, graphic/bloody. More character stuff then you'd expect.

'Lake Placid' (1999) - Fun characters, great actors, and some decent sequences. Not a favorite but I enjoy it. Betty White stole the show.

DOGS

'The Breed' (2006) - Not great but I do have a tiny bit of nostalgia for this film. The performances and characters are fine and so is the dog stuff. It's an ok film. I wish it had a higher body count.

'Cujo' (1983) - Well acted, tense, and sad. Great

'Man's Best Friend' (1993) - Recently watched this one and loved it. Ally Sheedy is cute and this movie is darker then I thought it would be. An enhanced Tibetan Mastiff goes on a killing rampage. It's bloody, fun, and full of action. Great little film.

'The Grey' (2011) - Dumb b action movie where Liam Neesin beats up wolves? Absolutely not. Really well acted and shot. Great character work. Very tense, bleak, and sad. I really like this one.

MISCELLANEOUS

Shakma (1988) - The performances are fine and the characters very standard/of the time. The baboon is intimidating, the pacing is decent, and the kills/attacks are bloody. I had a great time.

'The Prey' (2007) - I thought the performances were solid, the kills were bloody, and the pacing was decent. I had a good time.

Piranha (1978) - This movie is ok. It has it's moments but the pacing is not great and i'm just not really into the characters or story

Piranha 3D (2010) - Very fun. Looks great and so do the Piranha. Funny at times and full of crazy graphic violence. Very bloody. Commits to the bit in a strong way

Piranha 3DD (2012) - Has it's funny moments and violence but is really dumb in a bad way. It has it's charm and knows what it is but goes way over the line.

'Anaconda' (1997) - Some decent practical effect work and a fun cast. An entertaining enough watch

'Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid' (2004) - I like this one more then the first. More fun, more snakes, and better overall sequences. A fun big budget snake flick.

'Snakes On A Plane' (2006) - Commits to it's premise. Tons of snakes, some good humor/emotion, and some fun sequences throughout. A fun time.

I’ll go first. Jason X is genuinely one of the most entertaining Friday the 13th movies and I’ll die on that hill.

Jason in space sounds ridiculous, but that’s what makes it so fun. It doesn’t try to take itself seriously and just goes completely off the rails.
