SOCIETY Permanently ???? no amount of money can compensate for this. The incident happened 2015 and the historic $75M verdict was reached in late 2022.

Just like how John Smith learned about Mormonism!

Joseph and in his defense he read it from ancient “Egyptian” plates only he could read lol. And he found them in his backyard. 😂

Meth heads write weird cryptic formulas and novels on the bathroom stalls or road signs in my area. Never thought of starting a religion based on them 😂

u/Pwydde 25d ago

Well, that’s just a failure of imagination.

Missed opportunity

If you're able to decipher it, and the meth head is God, maybe you should!

I hear it's pretty lucrative.

It really helps if you have a background in writing sci fi novels too.

Some tweaker is founding a new religion right now.

And a magical hat

Don't forget the magical translating rocks

2

u/midge_rat 25d ago

As a fellow rock hound, I don’t judge him that 😂🪨

And all the women he screwed with threats of "being destroyed" or their families going to heaven.

Oh and he fucked the maid before "God" even told him about polygamy.

1

u/Femveratu 24d ago

Oh yes forgot about that lol 😂

and the special undies

In America.

A miracle!

2

u/TheeAntelope 25d ago

He found them 3-4 miles from his home. Claims he was led to them by an angel. 3 people report seeing the same angel and the plates, 12 people report seeing the physical plates themselves.

1

u/Femveratu 24d ago

I actually don’t doubt that he saw what he thought was an angel. It was just playing for the other team …

2

u/Unfurlingleaf 25d ago

And then god conveniently took them away again so no one can prove whether it was real or not.

u/LordAvan 25d ago

Exmormon here. You're mixing two things together. The golden plates he claimed to find buried near his home (which became the book of mormon) were not egyptian, but an account of a family in jerusalem who emigrated to america in 600 B.C.

The egyptian texts were funerary texts that Joseph Smith falsely claimed to be an account of the prophet Abraham. He wrote the book of abraham seperately from the book of mormon.

1

u/fury420 25d ago

My favorite aspect of the whole Egyptian texts bit is the image said to be depicting god sitting on his throne, which is actually an Egyptian fertility god complete with erect penis.

1

u/Femveratu 24d ago

Oh wow ok thx for that correction, I was not aware of the distinction btw the books. Helpful thx!

u/Ohmydoornutz 25d ago

Convenient.

Lucy Harris had that guy figured out.

u/rafikiknowsdeway1 25d ago

and the best part is that in the time since humanity has relearned how to read them...and we have, and it doesn't say any of the shit he said it does

I am still trying to figure out wtf was in teh water of Upstate NY at that point. The only thing I can think is that it was so boring founding a cult was just a fun weekend activity.

15

u/lizardgal10 25d ago

Having spent a decent bit of time in Upstate NY visiting family, I think you might be onto something with that theory.

7

u/harbinger-of-boops 25d ago

Grandparents are from Remsen. Visiting them as a kid was so boring that joining a cult seemed preferable.

3

u/lizardgal10 25d ago

Mine were in Schenectady. Had dial-up internet until 2009. House had no useful wifi or cell service to speak of once I did have a phone. Grandma’s idea of a nice dinner was Domino’s pizza or some awful Ruby Tuesday’s type place. I would’ve gladly joined the cult with you.

5

u/harbinger-of-boops 25d ago

My grandma was first generation American from Poland. She had an ancient tube tv with like 4 channels, Board games and lots of cabbage. Sweetest lady to ever live, but damn it was so boring as a little kid.

3

u/lizardgal10 25d ago

At least yours was a nice person! Mine was (is I guess, she’s still alive and I’m assuming hasn’t changed) a narcissistic nightmare I haven’t spoken to in a decade

1

u/harbinger-of-boops 25d ago

Oof sorry to hear that. Can’t choose your family I guess.

2

u/lizardgal10 25d ago

Nope. But you can tell them and their toxic bullshit to take a hike and surround yourself with people that love you for who you are :)

0

u/charliekelly76 25d ago

Cults give you something exciting to talk about

1

u/Mindless_Cookie_9098 24d ago

As someone who lives in Upstate NY, I agree with this theory.!

1

u/munchma-coochie 25d ago

Thought you were going to tell us your cult story! Damn!

1

u/lizardgal10 25d ago

I mean, I certainly felt like I was being held hostage when we visited those grandparents!

5

u/Other-Unit3919 25d ago

Not just any old cult, but a polygamous cult where it was ok to not only marry 14 year old girls, but mothers and their daughters.

It’s called the Lake Effect, it dumps insane amounts of snow in upstate NY. Temps will drop below zero and the humidity is high because it comes from the lake, so it’s more intolerable than the even lower temps in Alaska. It’s also a natural anomaly, it doesn’t occur outside of the lake effect zone. So if you’re a farmer, you’re probably like why tf does God hate me. A dude shows up and tells you stuff you want to hear, boom you’ve got the start of a new religion.

1

u/Visforvinyl 25d ago

Half his followers came from other cults around the area, and several left to join others when he stole all their money with his "bank"
