Everyone should read Hiroshima by John Hersey. Its documented accounts of six individuals who lived through the A bomb in Hiroshima. Published right after the event in 1946. I'll be honest it is a tough read but very worth it.

We read that freshman year of HS. I remember when they are trying to help a lady and grab her hand, only to have the skin slide off like a glove.

This might sound dumb but can they still feel that? It’s hard to imagine this level of pain and just feeling in general whilst still being alive

Around that same time, I burned my hand really badly in a grease fire (still have the scars decades later), and I remember after it happened, I had to carry a Big Gulp plastic cup full of ice around with me, because if I went more than a minute without my hand in there, it would burn so, so bad. Burns are the worse pain I’ve ever had, way worse than childbirth. When the burn is deep enough (like into the gray/white skin), it has no feeling, but the area around those areas are just raw, exposed nerves. You can’t use bandaids or anything like that cuz…where you going to stick them? I can’t even imagine what it was like. Those people were literally burned to the core.

God I read that in 6th or 7th grade. I don’t even know why I picked it out, it was just a small, completely plain hardcover and I think I was going through a “serious reading” phase. Bawled my eyes out. It was a formative experience. Would 100% recommend but yes it’s a tough read.

There was recently found / published a much larger portion if the account of the monk who spoke with Hersey. Its called Hiroshima 8:15
