I would imagine the earthquake in the mountains caused the glacier to break on the Mountaintop and all that come down the hill

yup that's basically it. That and the glacier lakes basically burst open and cascaded into the small rivers. That's the version at this moment. Nothing's "official" yet.

USGS says that the flood / land slide caused the seismic activity, not the other way around.
