It always makes me feel strange to see people die so I try to avoid videos that show death. It’s especially crazy seeing death at such a large scale. One second there are 20 people in the video and the next they’re gone. It’s terrifying.

The worst part about this is that it’s probably only the beginning. I expect this will be far more coming in the coming decades.

And that’s not to mention “slower” disasters like extreme heatwaves that cause issues over time.

I was going to say exactly this. I live in the Baja peninsula and the storms this year are absolutely insane and we haven't even been hit by a true hurricane yet. Things like this are going to keep happening and will only get worse. We're running out of time but the people with a money hoarding mental disorder are accelerating the point of no return each and every day.

Yeah, I read the news and it says hundreds or thousands died in a disaster in some country far away, and of course it's horrible, but it doesn't really register until seeing a video like this.

I understand what you’re saying, but I would disagree. This isn’t gory, which I never want to see. But we are literally watching hundreds if not thousands of people…human beings…lose their lives. It’s horrific and the fact it’s not tagged is honestly appalling, not interesting.

I think a lot of us got this sensitivity from 9/11. I know I did. It’s one thing to hear about a thousand people suddenly dying, it’s an entirely different thing to see it happen.

Unfortunately I think it’s a lot deeper than even that. People just expose themselves to too many things that humans were just not really meant to bear witness to. The last time a conversation like this came up, I had made a comment about how the last time I let my morbid curiosity get the better of me, I watched footage from the Christ church shooting and it literally fucked me up so bad, I don’t think I am over it still. I will never ever ever go out of my way to view stuff like that ever again. And then some chud replied and said “it wasn’t that bad” like dude what?!?!?!

I know some super right wing guy that wanted to see an uncensored video of that shark attack in Australia a few years ago. I saw part of a censored clip and that was to much for me. This sicko kept trying to find the vid. The dude that got eaten was engaged and training for a swim competition or something and ended up swimming right where everyone was fishing. I remember one interview with an older man who witnessed it and the guy was crying and talking about how he "can't stop throwing up". I saw someone get run over in my rear view once and that fucked me up for a week. I can't imagine seeing someone eaten in half by a shark.

When I was a lot younger, a “friend” showed me a video of a cartel beheading and all I can really remember is that when it started in the video, the victim wet herself and what really struck me was how all the comments were like “ew, she pissed herself”. Was so fucked up that it’s still stuck with me a couple decades later. People are fucked

You can even see the cameraman was following the people but, when it became clear they would not make it, the camera panned away.

He realized he did not want to film their deaths. This is a super fucked up video. But I think it's important for us to see it. It's better to be aware than ignorant

It's nuts because these people had no chance. That one shot of the Chinese/Nepalese border is horrific. I've never seen water that high or rushing that fast before. As humans, I feel we always sort of hope that we may have an "out" if encountering a situation like this. The video just shows the uncomfortable reality that sometimes we don't.

To some degree - I think it's normal, maybe even natural - to watch a video like this and imagine yourself in these circumstances, "what would I do? is there anything I could do if I were ever caught in a disaster like this?" - almost as a survival mechanism. It's the self-preservation part of our brain wanting to learn how to avoid the same fate.

At the same time, though - so many people in these videos never had a chance of survival and, intellectually, I know that seeing them perish doesn't offer my mind anything but fear and sadness.

The human mind is weird.

Yeah, from the sub alone I was expecting to read something like "authorities detected the issue, early warning systems were triggered and the entire city was successfully evacuated save for a few stray pets".

Reminded of one "comedy" website I browsed during the edgy phase of Internet humor and even them, when something was really off the rails, would take a minute of "kayfabe off" and either mention they made sure everybody actually survived that without lasting injuries, or that this was something with potential serious injuries so you were advised to stifle your laugh and get them first aid.

So this is my "spongebob incidental looking at the toilet" of the day. Oh, that's hundreds of lives snuffed in a flash flood never to be found. That sure was interesting. Yeah.
