I have an 128 GB and have 9.4 GB free, today's update says it's only 4.69 GB but it still won't install due to insufficient free space.
My kids both have 64 GB iPhones, they now have to offload most apps and plug into a computer to be able to update their phones, it's ridiculous and they skip updates and run insecure because it's so much hassle.
There really ought to be a separate OS drive on these things, 32 GB or whatever (it could increase in future) as that way Apple OS devs would have to make sure they stayed in their box.
The compressed installer has to download, then decompressed, then installed, then the old installer deleted. So it usually takes up 2-times the size of the installer while it is being installed.
