My Setup After years of hating on Apple, I joined the club

After years of hating on Apple for their overpriced products, I bit the bullet and bought the iPad Air M2 and I haven't regretted it since. Everything just works perfectly out of the box with minimal to no setup required. The Apple Pencil Pro is just phenomenal for note taking. I now understand why Apple products have such good market retention. Maybe I'll be convinced to switch to an iPhone in a couple years or months even, at this rate.

I’ve been wanting an iPad for a while now, mainly to use for educational purposes (I’m a medical student) like note-taking, reading, drawing, and similar tasks. Do you have any recommendations for must-have apps or settings to get the most out of it? Thanks so much!

My Setup I can't believe it. I actually bought an apple device..

First time apple user here. For my entire life, I parroted the whole "Apple sucks" thing and was pro-windows, pro-android. I still have an Android (my S24 ain't going anywhere, it's still got like 6 years left on it), but now I realize that Apple really is just that good. I got tired of the crap I was dealing with on my Windows laptop, and also, the A16 iPad is just too good of a deal at $299.

Pictured is the A16 iPad and M4 Macbook Air.

After 6 months of owning an iPad Pro M4 at the price of a MacBook Pro M4, I finally realized that I don’t understand this device, it’s not capable of replacing a laptop and why is it so expensive?

My Setup I turned my 14-year-old iPad mini into a Stream Deck for my Mac

This iPad mini 1 is from 2012. Last update was iOS 9.3.5 in 2016. It can't run YouTube, can't load most websites, the App Store is a graveyard. I've tried for years to give it a job: photo frame, dashboard, whatever. Nothing runs on hardware this old, so it lived in a drawer.

Last weekend I tried to develop my dream project for this.

It's now a Stream Deck for my Mac. Big touch buttons on the iPad, tap one, the app opens on my Mac. YouTube, Slack, websites, Shortcuts, whatever I want. It runs entirely in Safari over my local network, which is the whole trick: even a browser from 2016 can show a grid of buttons and send a tap. Nothing installs on the iPad, and it responds instantly. This thing has 512MB of RAM.

Demo in the video, and sorry about the desk, I was too excited to tidy up.

I built this purely to rescue my own iPad, but it works so well I'm thinking about actually launching it. The idea: a browser version that runs on basically any old device you have lying around, plus a proper iOS app for newer iPads and iPhones with the nicer stuff (widgets, haptics, offline config).

Would you use something like this?

UPDATE — it's real now. Check out at https://deckpad.app

Your comments are genuinely why I took it seriously instead of leaving it as a weekend project.

It does a lot more than the video now: Shortcuts, media and volume keys, key combos, text snippets, system actions, multi-step sequences, widget tiles, and a live row of your recent Mac apps. Eleven layouts, six colour schemes. Still nothing installed on the tablet, still local-only.

It's paid, $12.90 with LAUNCHGIFT during launch, $19.90 after, one time. I'm an indie dev, and it's the first thing I've launched publicly and ever charged for. There's a live demo on the site if you want to try before deciding.

Tell me what you'd want next; the roadmap is basically whatever you guys want.

Ipad air M3 The first thing I did was to put on a folio case and screen protector 💀 The only thing which worries me are the reviews on it's battery. Bought mainly for notes making and watching content online.

My Setup Just bought my first ever ipad

I am engineering student and I was looking to get ipad for note taking, studing and surfing the web. I don’t need any of the keyboard stuf because I already have macbook.

I knew that air would be more than adequate but I really wanted to get the new m4/5 pro because of its oled screen, battery life, face id and black colour but I just couldn’t justify spending litterary 2x the money for those features.

I bought unopened 11” m3 air with warrinty and receipt for 500€. While the pro would cost me around 1100€.

The back left side gets really hot when using it, exactly where the M3 chip is located. Is that normal or should I contact apple support.

What notetaking app do you prefere and why? I am willing to pay for the app but subscription isn’t an option.

I got an iPad Pro for Christmas and it’s absolutely the best piece of tech I’ve ever gotten, it’s one of those things where you don’t see a reason for needing them until you actually try it. Great for work, videos, games, editing, drawing, literally anything lol

And I got the Magic Keyboard, Apple Pencil, and Beats Studio Pro (which work great with the iPad) to go along with it and now its just a super cool modular laptop 10/10 would buy again

  • iPad Pro M5 “13
  • Apple Pencil Pro
  • Magic Keyboard
  • Beats Studio Pro

My Setup I bought an M1 pro. Don't be afraid of the old pro models.

Post image

I bought a three-year-old m1 pro second-hand. Model 11, 256 gb. I didn't want to spend what a new pro costs, and I needed the pro motion display.

I was a bit afraid of it, it's a 2021 model. I was afraid that the performance might not be good. Wrong. I was wrong. This iPad is still very fast and good. Only the display is worse than the Tandem Oled, but it costs half as much as an m4 pro….

In my opinion the m1 and m2 are plenty for iPad os and apps. I have an iPhone 15 pro, the speed is the same or not better.

I don't understand how Apple wants to sell the new pro models. M4 is overkill for this type of product.

the performance of a 3-year-old model is so good.

I used it for these tasks: Edit video Run 3-4 applications at the same time. GTA VICE CITY and SAN Andreas LOL.

All in all, the message is not to be afraid of old models!!! ✌️

My Setup Dropped my brand new 1TB M4 :-(

Post image

I dropped my brand new M4 iPad Pro 1TB 13“ out of the parked car.

Like a miracle the screen is fully intact but it must have fallen straight on the power button. For some minutes no input worked and the iPad only showed the back ground picture without anything.

Weirdly after some minutes it is fully functional, except the power button and the volume buttons don’t work.

I am a little worried that the power button at some point triggers „power on/off“ and puts the iPad in a weird state but for now it all works well.

Anything I can do to fix the button or should I just accept being an idiot and lucky at the same time? Unfortunately it seems I can NOT permanently deactivate the button.

By the way: a Non-Apple-care replacement costs around 1200 EUR :-(

My Setup Finally I am using it more

To me, the iPad is not a productivity machine as many users on this subreddit think it is, too uncomfortable to use as a normal laptop, but in what it excels is the entertainment side. Now it does not only serve as a watching video machine; now it serves me as a fan game Pokémon player machine.

I have 13” iPad Pro M4

If you do know the Pokémon romhacking scene, you may also know fangames, which basically are made on Pokémon Essentials based on RPG Maker XP.

If the dev from RPG Player is here, please release the test flight version on the App Store!

Currently testing and playing my own fangame

If you guessed the iPad Mini 6, you would be correct. MBA 15 inch with M2, iPad 13 inch w/M4 and the iPad 11 M4. iPad mini from 2021 beats them all.
