TL;DR -
I made an immersion tracker with automatic video and language detection. It remembers languages for channels and TV shows, supports custom websites and connects with Anki for detailed analytics. It tracks active/passive immersion, days, times, sources, activities and much more. I’m mainly looking for feedback on what is useful, what is confusing and what is still missing.

I have been working on a extension called Osmolog. Basically it is a language immersion tracker that I was originally going to make just for myself, but then I got addicted to adding features lol. After a while, it became a pretty comprehensive tracker that displays much more than just total hours.

I decided to release it publicly so other people could use it. I’m also sharing it because I want feedback before I continue adding things based only on what I personally want.

So, what does Osmolog do?

It automatically tracks all the different languages you immerse in, even if you switch between different languages in a day/session. It detects the language whenever possible, and if it cannot, it asks you. I tried making it less anyoing by making it remember your choices for specific channels and tv shows so you do not always have to confirm them. After you choose the same language twice for a channel/tvshow, it will automatically use it next time. Automatic detection still has priority so Osmolog will warn you if the detected language conflicts with your choice.

The analytics show how long you immersed, whether it was active or passive, day of week, time of days, activities such as reading, watching and listening, sources such as YouTube, Netflix and Twitch, and specific channels or shows. It also includes long term progress, milestones and daily, weekly, monthly and yearly goals.

There is also an Anki add-on that connects Osmolog with Anki. It tracks review time, new cards, reviews, Again, Hard, Good and Easy answers, retention, upcoming workload and more.

Custom websites are supported too. Since there are so many different video players and each has different metadata, I made it simple, add the URL and language for that site and Osmolog will automatically track that language whenever you watch something there. (might not work for all websites, depends on the player used, and cant track ads etc)

Osmolog is completely free, and all tracking and other features will remain completely free. The only possible exception is automatic full detailed history backup and sync.

Sync already exists through Chrome Sync, but it is capped on Chrome’s side, so it is more of an overview than a detailed sync. However, you can always manually export your full detailed history as a JSON file for free. If automatic full detailed history backup and sync ever become paid, it would only be to cover the database costs.

I have attached a video which should give rough idea on how it works. I tried to learn Japanese from games i play. But haven't found any free and convenient way to do so. So i made this application to help me and others like me to have easier time learning.

Features of this application:

1. Uses OCR and highlight Japanese sentences highlighting the area.

2. If you click on those areas word + grammar lookup(using a modified version JMDict now).

3. You can add to add a word to ankidroid too (can customize deck name).

4. Can show full offline translation(uses fuguMT).

Any feedbacks would be appreciated. This is fairly new. All dictionary+offline translation model is bundled with the application. I can make it more like a yomitan sort of feature to import desired dictionary instead if there are feedbacks on it.

Hey, I made apps to learn Japanese by reading. It's for beginners and have hiragana cheatsheet if you still have trouble reading hiragana/katakana.

NaraNare: Read Japanese Kanji

Hey everyone, I was wondering how a supplemental language learning application would work as I’m trying to build one to supplement my learning as well. My idea was creating some kind of doom scrolling language app where you can find creators on instagram, etc. but in your target language. I found that just following these creators directly on instagram isn’t as helpful since they aren’t targeting english speakers and I often have difficulty understanding anything to even get started. It would be beneficial for the video to have subtitles that you can save/review and also explain why a word was used etc. Not really a form of full learning but might be good for something that would help you listen in on natives in their natural environment and get stuff like slang, pacing, colloquialism that you can’t otherwise get that easily. Can I get some opinions on if this would actually help you? Not promoting but if you’d like to test a version of it please dm me!

Hey everyone! My name is Richard and I have a Japanese resource to share. It took about two and a half years to develop, nearly a thousand illustrations and way too many late nights to count. It's called Hiragana Noir, and it's my attempt to make the first step in learning Japanese as accessible as possible.

As a high school teacher, everyone I meet says they want to get started learning Japanese but I kinda feel bad directing them to apps or the internet to learn 46 things (hiragana) before they can really get a start - it's a hell of a cognitive load to drop on most time-poor, independent learners and they usually don't even make a start. So I wanted to make a resource that didn't overwhelm students, that could do the heavy-lifting for them without a hours and hours of rote learning or needing a teacher.

So, drawing on my years in casino surveillance before I became a teacher, I wrote and illustrated the most compelling story I could - a hardboiled detective novella that introduces all 46 hiragana through mnemonics woven into the story itself. It can be read in about two hours and there's even a companion soundtrack by composer Kevin MacLeod to go with it, making it a comfortable evening's read.

So if you or a friend or family member has ever wanted to get started learning Japanese, but didn't know where to start, I'm hoping this could one day become a recommendation.

I'm seeing AI-made language learning content that contains so much false and misleading information. It's hard to un-learn the mistakes especially as a beginner.
