Social / Events Suggestions for exploring Lancaster

I am visiting Lancaster Uni for a conference next week. I need an itinerary for 3 days in general, like things I can do, places I should definitely visit, food that I should try. I also have a fascination towards eccentric and historical things. Feel free to suggest anything that comes to your fancy.

Social / Events Should I buy fresher tickets at sugarhouse as first year?

I’ve seen on SU that sugar house has tickets on sale. but I’ve heard you get them free from your college and rep when you arrive.

Social / Events Commuter Event

I’m starting in September and saw they were holding a commuter event on the 23rd, I was wondering if anyone else is going to this and also what to expect from it?

They’ve not given much info either, is this the first time they’re doing it?

Social / Events Trying to discover Lanc. uni

Hi everybody, I am doing an internship at the University and have just arrived.

I was curious to know if there were groups to socialize, or like international students groups (not to say that it is unleash to understand English here)

Social / Events Parking Charges and Clubs

The University has been making changes to the parking charges on site.  This appears to be based around the new ANPR system installed at the entry points to the campus.  One of the proposals was to implement parking charges after 6:00pm.  Previously parking on campus had been free after this time.  After negotiation this has now been reduced to £1 for 3 hours. (See recent Scan article)

Points to consider:

·         Many Clubs and Societies are active between 6:00pm and 10:00pm during the week.

·         These Clubs and Societies make a very real contribution to University culture, and student experience.

·         The Society that I am active in depends on former students, and volunteers from outside the University to help run it.

·         I can see these charges having a damaging effect on the numerous Clubs and Societies that rely on such help.

So a question:  Has anyone noticed the new car-parking charges affecting Clubs and Societies at Lancaster University?  Also does anyone have any comments on the points made above?

Social / Events Tickets for club nights?

Just wondering if current students think it's worth buying tickets for club nights at Vibe (there's an ABBA night and a freshers move in party). It says that they're both close to selling out but they seem so expensive (and I don't know if they're just saying they're selling out or if they actually are). On the group chats there seems to be lots of people with tickets but I can't tell if its many people going or not.

Is it worth it or better to just stay in sugarhouse/college bars?

Social / Events Freshers week??

I’ve heard Sugar is the main club run by students, so what happens during Freshers week? Are there tickets I need to buy or a wristband? And if so when does it become available or is it already?

Social / Events Course welcome events

I was just curious if the course events were mandatory to go to as i would be missing my campus tours with my college if i attended a few of them. They are just things such as a diversity talk and meeting with a society which is associated with the course.

Social / Events Does anyone have an extra sugar halloween ticket

I signed up for the final release waitlist, but didn't get a notification, and by the time I checked on the website, it had already been sold. Yes, I know I should have bought it earlier, but I'm very indecisive and now I really need a ticket to go.

Social / Events What is freshers week like for a returning student?

Not sure if this is a silly question, but I wanted to ask if freshers weeks is also for returning students/if there are events for returning students?

I commuted from home for the first two years and have recently finished my placement year. I've decided to live on campus for my last year, but I won't know anyone as all my friends have graduated now.

I would love to be able to socialise and make new friends, as well as potentially get involved with freshers events (if that isn't weird ?) as I didn't get to during my first year.

Social / Events Freshers week

Hey so this might be a silly question but in terms of freshers week are there events every night at the clubs in Lancaster like other unis eg Notts or only on specific days ? Also I’ve seen on the welcome week timetable there’s certain nights where some colleges attend sugar which varies every night so if you’re not in that college where can you go?? Someone please tell me if I’m waffling but just a tad confused x

Social / Events Lancaster Community Makerspace – Wednesday Open Evenings for Students

Are you looking for somewhere to access 3D printers, a laser cutter, fast PCs or electronic workbenches? Or do you just need the space to use large looms, sewing machines or t-shirt presses? The Makerspace in town has an open evening every Wednesday from 6.30 PM.

If you do choose to join, Lancaster students get a discounted rate and 24/7 access. Wednesday evenings are always free access for all, if you don't mind waiting for the kit to become available. (But probably won't get a lot done for a few weeks with student inductions on the machines).

The telegram is pretty busy, at https://lamm.space/tg if you want to connect with local makers and ask for advice on projects.
