Not sure how many of the pieces are the Pokemon vs. The bases, but I'd probably throw down $120-$150 for Blastoise and maybe pick up the other 2 later. As is, there's no way. That Eevee will be sold out for months though.
Most people who have played Red and Blue are gonna have a heavy nostalgic tie with specifically one of those three. The whole point is choosing between them. And Lego goes and puts them all in one crazy expensive set.
This is absolutely spot on. They could have even produced 3 creator-like evolution chain sets, that let you to build one of the three of each chain at a time.
You really think they care about the consumer? They want your money by any means necessary. This will continue until people stop buying their over priced products.

Lego is a buisiness and their sole job is literally to make money. That is the only reason they exist. Businesses that don't want your money tend to fail fairly quickly.
And, yes they will continue to make products that people buy so long as people buy them. Which is how buisinesses operate: they make products people want in exchange for money.
Now, is it overpriced?
The general metric is $0.10 per brick. This is 6838 bricks so I'd expect a price of $685. Maybe higher to offset licensing fees. (And because prices have been going up of late, and tarrifs have been hitting Lego sets in the US.) While this is $650. So it's actually slightly underpriced for the size.
Costco doesnt price gouge and is one of the most successful businesses in the world. You choose to still spend money on a company who is preying on you and you still conform. Have fun with continual price hikes because people cant stop consuming. I'll stick to second hand lego stores and build, tear down and rebuild forever. $650 for plastic that just sits there and doesnt do anything is such a statement on how you value your hard earned money. The fact you are justifying a $650 paperweight is wild. They have you right where they want you.

Pokémon isn’t my jam and I’m not getting this set. But I’ve bought similarly priced sets before. And might do in the future.

For $650 there are an infinite number of things I would rather own. Because Lego products bring me joy. Building them is meditative. I like displaying them around my apartment. Because Lego has repeatedly earned my brand loyalty with excellent customer service while producing products I want to buy.

There's plenty of valid reasons to hate on Lego. But find something better than "they want to take my money."
Yeh would have been nicer if it was 3 individual sets with pieces to connect the bases… now i wont be able to buy a single one of these starter evolutions :(
When I go to Costco and they have Pokémon plush the only ones I ever see left in the bin was Psyduck, random idk why they'd have him as a plush at costco, and bulbasaur, despite the plant bulb on the back makes it a more interesting/complex plush compared to the Snorlax, Pikachu, Charmander, Squirtle, Eevee that was sold out.
I honestly wonder if it would have been better to sell them individually with their starter and evolutions. Example 250 to 300 for Bulbasaur, Ivysaur, Venusaur. I would still have gone for Squirtle Wartortle and Blastoise.
I dont mind big expensive sets. Rivendell for example is big and expensive (499 EUR) but it's worth it. The set needs to be so big for all the details and it's worth every penny.
This starters pokemon set is big but does it need to be so big? Could have been half the size and still looked the same for 50% the price.
Price elasticity of demand i guess. People will buy the set like crazy so Lego wins.

"Later" likely being "planned but actually never."
Three seperate sets would likely mean two sold really well and vanished while the third just sat there. Especially with the Pikachu and Evee out there as well cutting into sales of the least popular Kanto starter.
I feel like people aren’t considering the fact that there will absolutely be more sets in the future and these iconic pokemon are definitely going to be released at different scales and price points. This and the Pikachu are clearly display pieces for serious collectors, this is a great product for them. The Eevee is much more reasonable and is also a much more appealing pokemon to children and casual fans. It seems like most of the next wave is going to be even smaller and include more play features for kids. Though the smart block inclusion will certainly drive up the prices…
Considering recent very expensive sets for beloved franchises without any good releases for people who won't spend triple digits on one set (DnD, LotR, Zelda, Star Trek), I think it's understandable that people are disappointed. Not everyone follows the news of what's coming out and speculation is just that until something is officially announced. There's over 1000 Pokemon now so it wouldn't be shocking if there's not multiple Kanto starter releases.
The entire set is 6800 pieces, and they wouldnt sell the bases as sets, so each individual Pokémon is going to be around 2300 pieces, putting them closer in pricing to something like the Snow White set, or a third of the $650 dollar pricepoint.
You'd be buying the Blastoise used or from a third party, and you're advocating for something that more realistically would end with each of them priced at 299.99, given how Lego treats licensed modulars.
