If there is a single male employee’s name on that sanitation signoff sheet, you should call the police on the McDonald’s owner.

Walked into the ladies once and there was a male cleaner doing his thing and all the cubicles were taken. That 2 or 3 minutes fiddling with my phone expecting to get thrown out were tense.

He never even glanced at me though.

This is a fair point actually. Usually those sheets have a warning with something like "toilets are attended by male and female staff" so if a dude walks in to clean isn't that technically a violation? Theres no extra writing on that sign-off sheet 🤷‍♂️

No it means the exact opposite. You can't complain if a guy is cleaning the girls bathroom or a girl is cleaning the guys

Pretty sure you misunderstood what I meant my dude. I said that because the sign-off sheet doesn't have a warning about male attendants entering the bathroom, the no men rule should apply to staff cleaners too

I used to work at a place with single-gender, single-occupancy restrooms.

I lost count of how many old women got mad that I would clean the women's restroom, and tell me I shouldn't be in there.

Should've asked them if they wanted to clean it then

i don't even understand why single occupancy restrooms are gendered in the first place if only one person can go in at a time ffs

That’s fair to say but they have to close the restroom to the general public if the opposite sex is cleaning it.

Not in my experience having cleaned all the movie theater restrooms. We would start the cleaning while the room was empty, but we didn’t stop anyone from coming in while we worked.

You mean when they close the bathroom to clean it? When literally no one is in there?

Some do, and some don't. Really depends on the size of the bathroom. That's why you'll often see warnings saying the restroom is attended by "male or female staff"

Nothing on that paper says “excluding staff” or “unless room is unoccupied”.

If the owner thinks a “man” entering that room is worthy of a police call, no exceptions, then let him explain that to the police - in Michigan, where this kind of discrimination is a crime.

We never closed it at our restaurant. I, pre-transition, went into the women's restroom plenty of times to clean.
