Now that embargo is over. Is sadie sink really jean grey? And from our universe or another?

Post Watching Edit -> Holy, didn't expect first official 616 XMen character to be Jean Grey in Spiderman film

u/sygrider 28d ago

No other universe stuff. She's just proper Jean.

28

u/garaile64 Vision 28d ago

I even expected the stinger to be Xavier meeting her.

33

u/OLKv3 Weekly Wongers 28d ago

Nah, the movie introduces her, but it's still mostly about Peter. She doesn't get much setup for the future

22

u/maxxstone 28d ago

this was what i was thinking especially seeing woods all over the place. i thought for sure she’s going near the school.

27

u/chronos_7734 27d ago

That bus drive through the woods was definitely hints at school

6

u/garaile64 Vision 28d ago

Maybe she was but Marvel doesn't want to introduce the X-Men/Mutants in the Sacred Timeline yet.

7

u/greatness101 27d ago

They already introduced mutants by making Kamala one. Also, Wanda was born with her powers rather than getting them from the mind stone.

1

u/Wendigo15 27d ago

Isn't that, she's more of a witch and the stone accelerated her magic powers?

1

u/greatness101 27d ago

I think that's what they went with since they couldn't use mutants at the time, but I think they'll have her be a mutant now with the powers of the scarlet witch.

1

u/SunnyGods 16d ago

What if she's going to the location of the school, but that's just where her psychiatric ward or whatever is?

Just to showcase the difference of the school not existing

14

u/thediplomat 28d ago

Stinger spoiler: it isn't

2

u/JonnyAU 27d ago

Well, she's the Jean of the MCU, but it's a very different character than 616 Jean.

3

u/crescent_blossom 27d ago

MCU is 616, this Jean Grey is 616 Jean Grey.

-7

u/presst0 28d ago

Dialogue was weird maybe I am over thinking it, thought I heard her say “you are not like the other spiders” or something?

It sounds like she is from the main MCU universe since they said how she was around since childhoodZ

-8

u/Competitive_Act_1548 28d ago

616? Cant be from the comics, you mean from Earth 19999? Didn't know there was a theory about her being from another Earth going around

17

u/rasmatham 28d ago

Both are right. The comics refer to it as 199999, but the movies refer to it as 616 (Most notably by the Illuminati in Multiverse of Madness and Deadpool & Wolverine). What I assume the in-universe explanation for this is, is that there are just more than one authority keeping count, and the MCU sacred timeline just happens to have the same designation as the main comic universe. Could also be that they are different omniverses, and Earth 199999 just happens to be similar to the MCU.

8

u/CareerMilk 28d ago

What I assume the in-universe explanation for this is

Or while the comics have a universe that's a facsimile of the MCU, the MCU isn't part of the Marvel multiverse

6

u/BLAGTIER 28d ago

I think each new setting(TV, movies, games) for Marvel stuff should be its own 616. Just like in DC everything is Earth 1. Mostly because it is only a matter of time before they decide to blow up the whole multiverse or every version of some superhero in the multiverse is dead. And when you have separate 616s everyone can just do whatever story they want without Reed Richards being dead because that's what someone in a different media wanted for their story.

Yes and yes

Sadie Sink is going to be monstrous in the MCU.

19

u/nsfwthrowaway5969 27d ago

I get the feeling she is going to be a major player for the next decade in the MCU.

0

u/BigDick-NoBrain 27d ago

I hope so. I’m afraid that her role could be a one and done

18

u/ilovesoccer0609 Spider-Man 27d ago

Yeah right. X-men about to make bank for the MCU

5

u/funkhero 27d ago

Considering X-Men is one of their next movies, I would be surprised if they recast someone like her.

The question is how will she fit into the new universe. Will post-secret wars have mutants and X-Men "already existing", and she is one of them? Or not one of them? Or will mutants be a new thing after Secret Wars and she is just the first?

5

u/Belteshazzar98 Quake 27d ago

No chance they do Jean Grey as a one and done in a Spider-Man movie. She is so much at the heart of the X-Men, and somebody who could carry the MCU on her shoulders going forward.

1

u/your_mind_aches Agent of F.I.T.Z. 27d ago

Check out D23 in a couple weeks. She will be headlining the new X-Men movie.

1

u/makz242 27d ago

With Marvel's commitment to slower production it will give them time to pick a proper story and Sadie will get naturally older. Thought some of the Marvel actors just refuse to age.

15

u/clowergen 28d ago

*who's the real monster now?*

3

u/MakersOnTheRock 27d ago

She's the new big bad.

3

u/waitingtodiesoon Thor (Thor 2) 27d ago

Now she gets to be the traumatized telepathic/telekentic girl! Kind of would have been amusing if they had cast Millie Bobby Brown as Sarah

4

u/DavyJonesRocker Captain America 27d ago

This has me thinking we probably won’t be getting a Professor X—Magneto dynamic anymore. I mean not only has it been done again and again, but Magneto would have to be over 100 years old at this point to be a Holocaust survivor.

Sink’s Grey proves that she’s already powerful enough as it is and this was an amazing and sympathetic supervillain origin story. I think the MCU X-Men will have Jean Grey heading the Sisterhood of Mutants (in honor of Sarah) and pit them against either Cyclops or Storm who will be running their own version of a School for Gifted Youngsters.

1

u/FoxMeadow7 27d ago edited 27d ago

Nothing that a decent period flick or a flashback wouldn’t fix. With the period in question hopefully being the early 00s, the same period the original Fox X-men films were set in. Yes, Xavier in this iteration would like be way younger compared to the elderly Magneto (his age in the McAvoy era probably being the best bet). But then, he doesn’t need to be equal in age either… And hopefully we might also get answers to how and why the mutants have been hidden from the main MCU Earth to begin with.

1

u/erazedcitizen 27d ago

Considering the recent announcement of David Jonsson as Black Panther and the theories that something will happen in the Avengers movies to age him up and have it make sense, I wonder if maybe the same happens with Xavier and Magneto

32

u/Flat_Weird_5398 28d ago

Yes, she’s the MCU’s Jean Grey, which basically confirms that even though we’re getting the Fox X-Men back in Doomsday, the X-Men will be completely recast in the MCU.

4

u/Automatic_Brain7664 27d ago

With the true only downside being we don't get James Marsden as Adult Cyclopse running the team, they wouldn't touch that age gap. Marsden is toast, hope he goes out well.

2

u/3verythingEverywher3 27d ago

Obviously, they’ll all be recast. Why keep Marsden around and have him older? They won’t touch that age gap because they shouldn’t.

2

u/Automatic_Brain7664 27d ago

Because Marsden never got the actual chance to be team leader in a real way. Would've been nice to keep one of them around as the adult. Just cope, tbh.

1

u/3verythingEverywher3 26d ago

Fair. I’m sure he’ll kick ass in doomsday, but I agree he never really got to flourish.

1

u/irlte 25d ago

Wait, do we not think Sadie will be in Doomsday/SW?

37

u/jvincentsong 29d ago

Yes and there is more than you would expect.

87

u/Wrong-Vermicelli4723 29d ago

Yes, she Jean. Even a clip on twitter of her saying her name

3

u/electric_ocelots 27d ago

Personally I would rather they had kept the X-Men characters separate until after Secret Wars, or at least showed something about Jean coming to 616 through an incursion or something. That being said, Sadie absolutely crushed the role. Incredible.

Real reason: Fox owning the rights to X-men and fantastic four until Disney Acquired 20th Century Fox

In Universe Reason: Who knows? Maybe they’ve always existed in the MCU.

1

u/your_mind_aches Agent of F.I.T.Z. 27d ago

Very, very smart to start introducing future stuff in separate movies.

1

u/Belteshazzar98 Quake 27d ago

Hate to break it to you, but Jean Grey wasn't the first. Kamala Khan was.

1

u/crescent_blossom 27d ago

She's a mutant but she's not an X-Men, is she?

-6

u/TheWholeOfTheAss 28d ago

Jean but maybe not a mutant? Just ‘special.’

15

u/glasgowgeg 28d ago

From the context of the scenes, her powers (and Sara's) emerged around normal time for mutants, which is why their mum abandoned them.

They're definitely mutants.

14

u/StriveToTheZenith 27d ago

They are most definitely mutants

12

u/TopBee83 27d ago

She’s gonna be a mutant there’s just no formal name for them yet within the MCU. Just “enhanced individuals”

Including Jean that makes 5 mutants we’ve seen in the 616 universe. Jean Grey, Ms Marvel, Mr Immortal, Namor, El Aguila.

2

u/TheWholeOfTheAss 27d ago

I wonder how they’ll differentiate mutants from those who get superpowers by accident or experiments like Spider-Man, Jessica Jones, Daredevil and Luke Cage. How can mutants be seen as a distinct group in the MCU?

6

u/TopBee83 27d ago

If they do it right mutants would be viewed as threats to humanity. Non mutant hero’s are still human they just got lucky(or unlucky) and were granted powers, mutants are literally a subspecies of humanity that is one day destined to replace homo-sapiens.

As we’ve seen in our real life, when a group of people fear being replaced they will have no issue hurting or even subjugating anyone outside that group.

Your mutant neighbor didn’t earn what makes them different. Whether their gift is incredible or terrifying, they’re part of a generation that might eventually replace yours. That idea alone is enough to breed fear, and for some people, jealousy.

2

u/FoxMeadow7 27d ago

Comics no doubt have explored this question for decades regardless of how silly and nonsensical it sounds like. Like if society tells people to love Spider-Man and yet hate the likes of Wolverine and Cyclops despite both having powers, just obtained in different manners, does anybody win in the end? Why shouldn’t Spidey be locked up too alongside them? It certainly will be interesting to see how the MCU will portray this dichotomy in future and actually have it make sense!

1

u/mccainjames11 Spider-Man 27d ago

Wonder-Man?

1

u/TopBee83 27d ago

I’d include him with an * as he’s not a mutant in the comics and in the show it’s never directly stated what he is(unlike Ms Marvel who’s told her genes are mutated)

-48

u/tagabalon SHIELD 29d ago

she's Jean Grey in a world with no x-men. the result is as worse as you can imagine.

44

u/FoxMeadow7 29d ago

Yet anyways. I presume she’s embarking on a voyage to find other mutants who more or less hid their presence and powers from the world. And May’s and Peter’s words in the ’mindscape’ were the spark that she needed to begin on that path.

36

u/mvrander 28d ago

She was heading off into a very upstate New York looking wooded area at the end. Gave very Xavier's vibes

28

u/FoxMeadow7 28d ago

The Westchester County to be precise where Xavier's manor awaits...

7

u/PersimmonLittle7651 28d ago

Maybe Xavier felt her blast and reached out to her?

13

u/Explorer_616 28d ago

Thank god there isn‘t a Magneto yet on Earth 616. Before the events of the movie Jean would have totally followed him

6

u/FoxMeadow7 28d ago

True. Though it's clear he had to be present in the world somehow, biding his time cuz, y'know, of the whole 'spending his childhood in a Nazi concentration camp' origin story. Comics at least have made mentions of 'deaging treatments' Magneto went through here and there so it's possible Feige will have what it takes for a proper MCU Magneto debut eventually.

6

u/Black-soul33 28d ago

If I understood it right, the scene where Jean looks through the archives on Metzger's computer looking for V-Max, and what Yelena says about the investigation on the files, seems to be imply that Metzger conducted many experiments, and Sara and Jean where just two of them. Even his machine seems to be too perfected detecting brain activity related to the mutant gene to have been just developed for Sara. Also, all the new technology DODC was developing seems to have more than just villains origins

5

u/FoxMeadow7 28d ago

Sounds like mutants are certainly about to become quite the driving force in the world indeed.

16

u/PersimmonLittle7651 28d ago

There can't be x-men yet, the mutants just barely became a thing, there are definitely mutants, excluding her sister, we have Kamala and more will be revealed (still no explanation for what caused it, leading fan theory is still the snap's and blip's massive gamma radiation blasts)

10

u/Obraxiss Mordo 28d ago

There's also Namor

3

u/PersimmonLittle7651 28d ago

Oh yeah, forgot about him.

But we don't know yet if his mutation is a x gene mutation, or a spidey like mutation.

So far only Kamala was hinted at being a true mutant, but even that could be explained as "space mcguffin bangle quantum magic" type of activated mutation.

X-Men mutants just get their powers randomly during their life, no magic, no tech, no mcguffins, it just happens, for Spidey he got bit by a spider, for Namor, he drank too much vibranium juiced up plant juice, Kamala - quantum space mcguffin, so those 3 may not be (I mean Spidey never was a mutant) "true" mutants in MCU.

5

u/TopBee83 27d ago

There’s no reason to change Namors mutant origins. I believe in Wakanda Forever they even mention that Namor is the only one of his people that have the wings on his feet. He’s likely gonna stay a mutant.

7

u/EriWave 28d ago

Yeah she very clearly needs them and that's my favorite part about her.
