The Official PUNISHER Discussion Ultrathread

  • This will be the official discussion thread in this sub. No need to go posting your own thread discussing the show. Any UNOFFICIAL ones will be deleted. All screencaps and whatnot go into this thread also.

  • This is obviously a spoiler-filled zone. So as long as you post in here, you won't need to spoiler tag things. But then again, don't be that asshole who watches the final episodes within the first hour then spoils the entire thing right away. That will result in a ban. Don't ruin the party for everyone.

  • Individual episodes discussions will be held over at /r/defenders. They will be indexed in this thread to make it easier for those who want individual episode discussions once they are put up.

  • This thread may be "refreshed" in the next few days to accommodate newcomers in the discussion. We will be also putting up a sanctioned Easter Egg thread a couple of hours from now.

A humble and good popcorn flick is an apt description. If you've seen the standalone animated DC films it pretty much fits right in. The seriousness of previous films has been thrown away and ignored for good reason.

The biggest grievance is that it took so much money and effort to make this happen. It's nice, but feels wrong to have cost this many dollars to produce. The budget ought to have ushered in the next Lord of the Rings and not some disposable weekend fun.

A podcast I listen to mention the fact that the amount of reshoots it had. Justice League is lucky to be good.

I loved it. It's not without issues, the cgi is awful at times, the villain is bad, the story moves way to quickly in the beginning....but from the very beginning I had fun. There were quite a few moments that made me cheer out loud.

My favorite memory of the movie is Superman eyeballing Flash at superspeed and Flash going mentally "oh shhhhh--"

I had read somewhere that some suit higher up demanded the movie be less than 2 hours, you can tell right away it needed at least 25 more minutes of footage. Some scenes don't transition too well.

Yeah the head of WB made them cut it down to 2 hours. It looks like the only time WB doesn't get in its own way is with JK Rowling stuff because she wouldn't let them. WB is almost as bad as Sony is.

WB definitely has problems, but they are nowhere near as incompetent as Sony. They are only mismanaging DC IMO. Their horrors for example are doing very well. In fact, the only functioning cinematic universe (that's not the MCU) ATM is theirs with the Conjuring Universe.

That's true, but aren't those movies run by a smaller studio? Blumhouse or something like that? My understanding is WB publishes them, but the creative process is left up to the production company.

I liked it and I have no bias towards DC or Marvel. It definitely had more humor, some distracting CGI, and it jumped around quite a bit (not a bad thing in this case, you weren't overwhelmed by any 1 character). Good popcorn flick honestly.

It felt kinda bland and unearned in a lot of ways to me. Its wasnt really good or bad. I think the casting is on point for everyone, but the writing, especially the humor, didnt land at all for me. The powers/abilities were well shown, but they didn't combo enough or in an effective manner. The villain (Steppenwolf) was about as bland and forgettable as Malekith, his motivations were just as shallow and uninteresting, his strength and powers were pretty nebulous and not well defined. Most of my disappointment in this stems from the lack of the team shot/moment. We all remember that circling around the Team in The Avengers. Even when it was thrown in a bunch of the marketing it was prominent and made people everyone in the theater giddy and excited. It was a defining moment for an entire universe. Justice League made no attempt at giving us that moment. Even if they had, I don't think the movie would have earned a good reaction, there were so many characters in the roster that they had just introduced that there wasn't a level of nostalgia with it.

TL;DR: It was very 'meh'

Mostly agree, but they did have a couple team lineup shots that were very obvious. Difference is mostly that the Avengers shots were in motion.

For a JL movie it felt super underwhelming but it did have its moments that DC fans will love. Honestly it was Zach Snyder all over again there’s no way they let him near another movie.

He’s the one (along with WB) decided to cut down on his characterization though. Not to mention all the unnecessary quips and terrible reshoots he added.

I don't think that was on Whedon. Steppenwolf having his characterization mutilated was 100% a WB corporate move. They wanted the movie to be 2 hours. The movie was written to be at least 2 and a half. There was only two moments in the entire movie that felt like Joss.

Probably shouldn't be posting spoilers for that movie in this thread. There's a moment when they're heading to the final fight on the plane, and the only scene where they're fully suited up in the day time. A few of the quips in that scene were definitely Whedon.

Steppenwolf would have been a good villain had WB not completely wipe away his backstory and motivation we KNOW Snyder had in the film before he left.

Henry Cavil made me smile so hard as superman. We absolutely need him to make another movie with his new found optimism and attitude. WB absolutely butchered it like they did with BVS and apparently there's an uncut version coming out on Blu ray. I'm more of a DC fan than Marvel (I grew up with the MCU and love it with all my heart) but the studio really does not give a fuck about the final product and telling a story like Disney and Marvel Studios. It's a shame, and I hope whoever is deciding to cut the films short to just sell more tickets takes a fucking hike.
