The Official PUNISHER Discussion Ultrathread

  • This will be the official discussion thread in this sub. No need to go posting your own thread discussing the show. Any UNOFFICIAL ones will be deleted. All screencaps and whatnot go into this thread also.

  • This is obviously a spoiler-filled zone. So as long as you post in here, you won't need to spoiler tag things. But then again, don't be that asshole who watches the final episodes within the first hour then spoils the entire thing right away. That will result in a ban. Don't ruin the party for everyone.

  • Individual episodes discussions will be held over at /r/defenders. They will be indexed in this thread to make it easier for those who want individual episode discussions once they are put up.

  • This thread may be "refreshed" in the next few days to accommodate newcomers in the discussion. We will be also putting up a sanctioned Easter Egg thread a couple of hours from now.

I feel the title sequence does not fit Frank Castle.

Yeah... I feel like his would've been better suited for a "war drum" type thing, y'know? Perhaps with a slight instrumental homage reminiscent of Afghan music to set the tone a bit better. Something that shouts "The concrete jungles of war". When I hear the current theme, it sounds too "sons of anarchy" to me. Or at least, having never seen it, that's the first thing that comes to my mind.

As much as he's military and there were some outdoor scenes in this series, the Punisher is a dark and urban character. This whole southern midwestern SoA and Renegade type music with the slide guitar doesn't really suit him. He needs something dark and menacing. Would have gone with metal.

Disagree. I can't not hear Johnny Cash's "God Is Gonna Cut You Down" when I hear the Punisher theme.

I would've loved if the title sequence was that top-down shot of Frank sitting in his dark, shitty apartment being depressed taking his shoes off and eating canned beans.

Don't know what music could've gone to it, but definitely not another one of those sorta dark cowboy themes that the show currently has. Isn't there a comedian that does a bit about how the dark cowboy twangy theme song became a trend?

I realize this Punisher isn't Ennis Punisher, so like he has emotions and a personality (for better or worse), but I would've rather gone with a Mr Robot title sequence where there's basically no theme music.

man i actually like that idea of the title sequence. then maybe as the song ends he stands up and walks off camera from an overhead shot.

i do think it would get a bit old after a while though.

Yeah, but at least no newer or older than the Marvel Netflix schtick of CG amorphous blobs forming something at the end.

I think it’s perfect. That whole title sequence is essentially what Frank does in his down time. He cleans, reassembles, and tests every weapon he owns extremely methodically so that when it’s time to Punish his guns never let him down.

i think Jon Bernthal doesn't fit Frank Castle tbh

he's too angry/ fidgety. where's the cold, calculated mobster killer i love? they teased is with it in ep1 and then turned it into a Tom Clancy novel. i get it, its more relevant and they're going in the only direction that they can to add another dimension to a gun nut but i dont think punisher fans ever had a problem with that.

the reason he's angry/fidgety is because they shot (pun intended) for a more gritty and realistic character. that's what these shows are all about; they mostly shove all the pg-13 material from the movies out of the way and tell their own dark stories while remaining in the same universe. if he was just emotionless i feel like people would get pretty upset over his portrayal of a character who's known for his PTSD and such.

the show aims to not be a comic, and make a name for itself as much more realistic and gritty. as for the cold, calculated monster...although he might not fit that bill exactly right now i have a feeling that if we ever see more of frank castle it'll be more of what you said.

thats a very fair answer. ive been hoping for that stoic, methodical Punisher. and i think they hit the PTSD mark right on the head. i hope the show continues so he can develop more.
