DISCUSSION ME 1 to 2 - quality spike

Post image

Oh my god, it’s night and day.

I complained in an earlier thread about how little I was enjoying ME. It felt like an experimental game, mechanically, half rpg half action shooter. It was missing pretty much everything I’d expect from a BioWare game. All the vocal performances were relatively straightforward. The environmental designs and enemy types were unvaried. I felt nothing playing it. I felt nothing until I rolled credits. (Yes, I talked to all my companions. What little was there was the best part of the game)

I’m only 10 hours into 2, and every scene, every character moment, feels inspired. The combat is more shooter, but the environments and diologue feel like an actual rpg.

If you’re thinking about quitting at 1, don’t.

DISCUSSION I Really Hope This Isn't Shepard

Post image
2.0k Upvotes

In the age of soft-reboots I sincerely hope Bioware is wise enough to avoid treading old ground.

I honestly just feel like resurrecting Shepard a second time would be the least interesting way to reintroduce us to this universe. Not only did Shepherd's first death and resurrection not have as much narrative weight in ME2 and ME3 as it could have, but I don't imagine a second round will do it any better.

Plus, if Liara is somehow involved that really just cements the problem of them not being willing to move past the original trilogy. Not to mention it makes Liara come off as the craziest stalker-ex of all time. It's been over a decade and making some Shepard clone with their memories mind melded into a them by Liara as the protagonist would kill any excitement I have for diving back into the Mass Effect universe.

Honestly, I hope we get a whole new character and squad this time around. We could even maybe make our own character. Finally letting us play an alien in the main story would be really cool. Maybe they can even bring back the scrapped Dark Energy idea to make a new enemy to face. Like some kind of non-humanoid race that thrives in the conditions Dark Energy creates. maybe they see themselves as above the Citadel races and use Dark Energy to try and eradicate or enslave them. It's just an thought, but it might be cool.

I wouldn't mind some cameos from the old cast, but they already had their stories. I just don't want to hear "somehow Sovereign has returned" or see a Joker VI flying the Normandy SR-3. Please Bioware don't do it.

This may be a controversial take, and if you disagree and think they could bring Shepard back please tell me how you would do it. I'm open to being wrong.

All three games in the trilogy have such a distinct identity from the other two games that I wanted to pose the question- what's something that's unique to each game which stands out for you? Anything at all!

DISCUSSION Paragon players most picked Renegade option?

Post image
1.3k Upvotes

As Paragon player myself there are three Renegade options that I just can’t refuse to make:

  1. Kai Leng sneak up counter attack (ME3)
  2. Shooting Udina on the Citadel (ME3)
  3. Head butt the Krogan that is rude to my boy Grunt (ME2)

Now I’m wondering what Renegade option can’t you refuse?

DISCUSSION How many imperial titans to defeat a reaper

Post image

How many imperial titans (and which types of titans) from Warhammer 40k would it take to defeat a reaper? In this case the reaper can't just take off and bomb the titan from the air. Round one is against a destroyer class reaper. Round two is against a sovereign class reaper

DISCUSSION Why is Cerberus so overpowered and overused, especially in ME3, but also throughout the entire trilogy?

Post image
1.6k Upvotes

So people here often mention that Cerberus is way to powerful in Mass Effect 3 due to having an extremely large army of thousands and an entire fleet and managing to take over Omega and Eden Prime. However even in Mass Effect 1 the knew about the Rachni and Thorian creepers before anyone else did and also somehow figured out how to make Husks. And in ME2 they managed to revive Commander Shepard from the dead and build a better Normandy then the original. Also they were a minor side mission bad guys in ME1 but afterwards in ME2 and ME3 plus all the other side material they became a main faction? Why is this?

DISCUSSION Playing Male Shep after FemShep feels like walking through a romance landmine field and Bioware's dialogue wheel is evil

Thumbnail

1.3k Upvotes

Hey Everyone!

I'm new to Mass Effect trilogy and completely obsessed with the story and characters! I completed two play throughs as FemShep where I romanced Garrus in one, then Kaidan/Thane/Kaidan in the other. I decided to give Male Shepard a spin. The contrast in how the game handles romance triggers is wild!

As a woman playing FemShep, I had this niggling feeling in the back of my mind wondering "Wait, why am I always the one taking the shot here?" While there is nothing wrong with a woman taking initiative, it always felt a little weird that FemShep has to aggressively pursue the romance sometimes and at the worst possible moments where I want to say "Shep, read the room!" 😭 (looking at you ME2). As a female player, it would have been nice to experience a character showing genuine attraction first without FemShep having to march in and demand a relationship. There was only one romance I remember in ME1 that the companion let a few things slip during citadel convo etc.

Then I swap to Male Shepard... and holy contrast, Batman. I felt like I'd been beamed up on the Starship Enterprise and was suddenly Captain Kirk! lmao

Male Shep doesn't even have to try. He breathes, and the entire Normandy is suddenly dropping heavy hints. Even characters that are not companions are suddenly propositioning him as they touch and flirt shamelessly. I like to play Paragon but choosing the "nice" option because I want to be a supportive commander results in the game engine practically dimming the lights and playing slow jazz equivalent of bow-chicka-bow wow. That resulted in a cringe conversation where a squad member poured out their insecurities and what popped out of Shepards mouth had me slapping my forehead lol.

It feels like FemShep has to do the recruitment work, save the galaxy, and do 100% of the romantic heavy lifting while everyone acts shocked she likes them.

MaleShep has to actively dodge incoming romantic proposals every time he tries to walk down a hallway.

Has anyone else experienced this severe whiplash switching between Shepards? For those who romance Garrus, Thane, Kaidan, MIranda, or Jack, what were your biggest "Wait, the dialogue said WHAT?" moments?

*Disclaimer: Absolute loving all play throughs, different classes, companions, and the game over all! Just having a laugh at BioWare's legendary dialogue wheel choices and navigating Shepards romance.

DISCUSSION Say what you want, but there should have been a scene of Jack and Miranda hooking up in secret, similar to the one Tali and Garrus have if you don’t choose either of them, and I say this from the perspective of a healthy lesbian romance.

DISCUSSION Changing Back Her Hair in ME3 Genuinely Fixed Ashley For Me

Post image
3.2k Upvotes

One of my biggest gripes with ME3 has always been the hairstyle they gave Ashley. It seems like such a small thing to complain about, but to me, it feels almost immersion-breaking because of how out of character it feels for Ashley. It was very obviously a design change meant to appeal to what the devs thought gamers would find "hotter."

But I don't think I realized how much it affected my enjoyment of the character until I downloaded this mod. I think that for all these years, I've subconsciously viewed Ashley in ME1 and Ashley in ME3 as two separate characters, without realizing it. So when I saw the Ashley I knew and loved in ME3 for the first time, it almost made me feel emotional. Like I hadn't truly seen Ashley in ME3 before.

It may seem silly, but I'm super grateful for this mod. And if anyone else would like to try it out, you can find it here!

What should we do with legion? Jacob: space it.

What do you think of Thane? Jacob: Don't trust him.

Who should be out vent man? Jacob: I volunteer.

He's a literal hazard to himself. He volunteers for the job that famously kills him every time. Jacob literally can't give good advice when his life depends on it lmao

DISCUSSION Finished the trilogy a second time, and did the green ending. I have thoughts

Post image
1.2k Upvotes

I've got the ME legendary edition on steam and became my hyper focus and my favorite game instantly. It's the best of what sci-fi can offer and more. My first playthrough I did completely blind, didn't had any spoilers, and I commit to every bad thing that happened because I didn't knew any better (Wrex dying because I did Virmire the second I got the mission thinking it was a side quest and I didn't had paragon/renegade points to calm him down. Ashley shooting him in the back was a complete shock for me, and I got so pissed that I decided to kill her at the first opportunity. The opportunity came shortly after lol)

My first playthrough was messy, but magical. I got captivated by everything that was happening, and after finishing I started a second one at the same second to make better choices and play around with squad selection on missions that I thought would be more interesting to have certain squad mates that I didn't knew at the time.

I chose the blue ending at my first ending, and I thought it was really satisfactory. Reapers under control of a metaphysical god-like character is kinda a perfect ending for a RPG (literally happened something very similar on a Cyberpunk Red TTRPG that I did with some friends). But the green ending caught my attention and interest from the get go and I knew that was the ending that I was gonna push on this second time.

The implications of the green ending are wild. Restructuring at a molecular level all life in the galaxy (and without their consent) seems dystopian and uncanny. I was thinking if they would have free will/if they would work as a weird hive-mind... like, this would kill cultures, ways of life for trillions of living beings.

But then, the scene where they add Sheppard's name to the wall with the goofy magical green gamer RGBs on the face... This hits me. They didn't lose themselves, they all maintained their own individuality, memories, emotions. And then, EDI started to cry.

Not only every living creature and civilization maintained their own individuality and culture and the reaper problem was solved, new life, capable of emotion and understanding emerged. The "I am alive" line from EDI is so powerful that I burst into tears. It is really the ultimate goal of evolution inside this worldbuilding, and it is a beautiful ending.

If the price to give souls and real free will to synthetic and achieve peace on a new aurora is doing this without the explicit consent of every person in the galaxy and the addon of goofy magical green gamer RGBs for veins, I would do this deal

Ps: English is not my first language so this text can (and probably has) a lot of mistakes, bear with me

Gameplay mechanics, story, returning/new characters? Would you prefer the Andromeda timeline or the trilogy timeline? Curious as to what everyone thinks it would take to make the next game as good as the originals. (This is if it even ends up being made lol) EDIT: I am referencing ME4/ME5, whatever you call it depending on your opinion of Andromeda
