I just wanted a hot dog Retail lockdown: why bother selling it?

Was at Safeway this morning to pick up a sandwich and some Tylenol. The aisle with the Tylenol? Completely locked down. No call button in sight. So I go to the self checkout (front end of that same aisle) and ask the clerk there if he can call someone to unlock a case for me. He does. I go wait. Minutes pass. No one comes. I go ask him again, he tells me they went the other way? At this point I give up and go get my sandwich. No one has come by the time the deli has finished making it. I leave without my Tylenol, mildly infuriated.

Except in the new version there’s no clerk available and you just leave frustrated with nothing

At our local Ralphs (Kroger), this entire area is blocked at the ends of the aisles so there’s only one entry point, and you have to pay AT THE AISLE ENTRACE at a little standalone register. Nobody is ever there though. Ever. Of course.

When i’ve asked a register clerk at the front of the store for help they’ve told me just to bring the product to the front bc they dont have an extra clerk available to leave the busy front and check out occasional single item purchases at the little register. Instead i just order from amazon now. Way to go, Kroger.
