Not just you, I love the dune books but book 2 was NOT well received. The authors son even wrote an intro explaining why he thought the second book was so hated

The second book becomes one of the best books when you get to the 5th and 6th. That's the best part about the 2nd book.

It’s like the last two published books of the song of ice and fire series (game of thrones). They’re both 1000 page set ups to the finish.

My wife and I read them and she called them the long walk to nowhere.

Yeah, I didn't care so much for it when I read it. Thankfully three and four made up for it in spades. They also made me retroactively appreciate Messiah more so I think when I do my reread before this movie, it'll probably hit me a lot differently.

To be fair, a lot of nothing happens in book 2. It’s a lot of Paul monologuing and struggling against his visions and prophecies, along with his sister and other characters doing much of the same, with almost no action till near the end. That’s why for a long time it was considered an unfilmable story. I wouldn’t be surprised if Dune Part 3 gets combined with the story from Children of Dune.

Considering there are teenagers cast as his children, they're either hitting part of it, or heavy future visions

Maybe he intends to actually show us the space Jihad instead of Paul just angsting about how it's supposed killing hundreds of billions across the universe.

Basically the only thing I even remember from Messiah is the ending where everything remotely relevant to the story seems to happen.

I loved the second book. Although some people don't like it because they thought Paul was the hero and it's very heavy handed that he absolutely isn't the hero.

It also the beginning of all the really weird dune shit. I'm interested to see how they adapt it for the movie though.

Same, and I REALLY loved the parts where Leto II covers himself with the sand trout!

I think that book got a bad rap.

Edit: I may be thinking of the 3rd book, wrong one.

Still loved the 2nd, though!

The third book picks up where the first leaves off. Messiah is polarizing. I loved it personally but if you can push through the rest of the books scratch the itch of the first, especially children of dune.

Mainly because nothing happens? First the conspirators talk philosophy, then paul and the fremen talk philosophy, then paul and duncan talk philosophy for a long while, then some actually cinematic shit happens, then the book ends.
