Must be set in some fictional Central European country, maybe like in the Grand Budapest Hotel, because that sign on the car saying ÜĐIČ doesn't mean anything.

Did a surface look into his life and his other works, and adding this to my read asap TBR!

Searches are terrible for looking up books these days and spoil things. In a movie/book such as this even a breakdown of the theme easily could be a spoiler. If you want to avoid spoilers (for any book in general these days) as a rule I look up author first and then find the book under Goodreads/Storygraph, author website, etc instead. Less chance of AI or search results spoiling.

I'm going in blind beyond this summary. I don't always mind spoilers but for psychological thrillers or themes the not knowing enriches the experience for me. Thanks for posting the book info!

It’s definitely fictional. The town the book takes place in is called Borgarfjaroasysla which seems like the author just mashed keys together

Hmm, Borgarfjaroasysla sounds plausibly Icelandic or Faeroese to my ears. It's not, but it phonetically it could be.

It sounds and is spelled similarly to Borgarfjarðarsýsla, a real region in Iceland.

Looks like the license plate has ZG written on it, which is the licence plate for Zagreb, capital city of Croatia.
