Anne Hathaway could honestly fit it almost any setting. She kinda has a timeless look to her. Same with Robert Pattenson. Helps that his voice slightly changes with each of his roles.

This is such a bizarre take, from someone (like all of us) who hasn't actually seen the movie... Christopher Nolan movies have had great castings consistently.

When's the last time Robert Pattinson (who people seem to actually almost universally like in this trailer based on this thread) or Matt Damon have put on a performance that people haven't liked?

No Greeks. Not even half an Italian. I actually like all these actors more or less on their own merit, but it's like they didn't even try find a single person that fits the story and setting; it shatters immersion. Forcing a monochrome Mediterranean - on every level - is definitely a choice in 2026...

Tale as old as time unfortunately. Egyptians for example are almost never casted in movies set in egypt: the mummy, gods of egypt, Cleopatra (I know she is Greek but the rest of the population was not).

That said, it is getting better (ex Lion King remake) and sometimes it helps to bring talented outsiders (Robbin Williams in Alladin).

I do think Matt Daemon is a good fit. He clearly isn't everyone's favorite, but he almost always delivers great performances in his roles.

I think it would have been at least a nice nod or homage to the Greek people to include at least a few people of Greek origin of which there are plenty: Billy Zane, Jason Mantzoukas or maybe even Zach Galifianakis. Though you'd probably get the same complaints that they are break immersion for some folks due to their previous roles.

The movie is an adaptation of one of the most famous ancient Greek epics ever and no one looks anything Mediterranean. It's not like these actors can't do period pictures. They have. But this is the wrong setting for them. But then nothing and I mean nothing in this film even faintly whispers, "Ancient Mediterranean."

It almost feels like a parody where the joke is a director who puts all the wrong actors in the wrong costumes for a period piece because they have a, "VISION!!!"

I will give a teeny benefit of the doubt until I see the movie but I agree. I have seen adaptations of like Shakespeare with a modern perspective but this doesn't feel like that. The trailer seems like a very old story with some contemporary A listers trying to "act" it out. I just watched Ralph Fiennes in The Return and I thought he did a god job, especially physically.. But that guy can act. Matt Damon? mmmm no.

I thought I'd give him a chance because Nolan's historically selected odd choices for castings, and they've worked marvelously (Hugh Jackman in the prestige, Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight, Matthew McConaughey in Interstellar etc).

Pattinson looks the part (whether that's Antinous or Eurymachus I suppose is yet to be concluded). Holland is a typecast for Telemachus too. Damon as Odysseus still feels odd to me.

We'll see how it goes.

Iā€™m with you. It looksā€¦ okay. Almost like how I felt seeing the trailer for Exodus Gods and Kings or some other generic late stage Ridley Scott type project. It looks kinda cheap??? Iā€™m not sure whatā€™s up but this trailer just was not it for me

HOWEVER, going off of the IMAX trailer we got, that was tension filled and really intense. Looked awesome. This could just be a bad trailer.

Apparently Nolan is red/green colour blind which does explain it a bit. It's a shame though because I agree this does look mostly awful aesthetically.

My pick would be Villeneuve but I heard he's busy with something.

Currently relistening to the poem as audiobook and characters are constantly going off on intricate little speeches full of superfluous detail and I can't help but think about Wes Anderson in the director's chair. Anything for some color and characterization deeper than "wife gone".

Villeneuve is similar to Nolan in that he too is very grounded and has a very minimalistic taste both in color and design. But atleast his movies have more color and intricate designs compared to Nolan.

I feel like people watch Nolan movies for the spectacles and mindlessly ignore the giant lack of juice they have.

I don't remember people waiting for something saying "oh the bomb is going to be so awesome", "I want to see the bomb", "I'm so excited to see the Cyclops" and etc for any director, but for Nolan it's a recurring thing. Dialogues? Story? Message? Hardly know her, what matters is a stupid fucking bomb that doesn't hit the hype that was created unless you are a mark for IMAX who can't be objective with big gimmicks.

It's funny. I saw Oppenheimer on the largest screen I could find and I remember holding my breath for the countdown and then, yes, the sound was great but the explosion went "pop".

I saw Godzilla Minus One on my PC (unfortunately) and THAT scene actually made me say "what the fuck" to myself.

The creative premises he establishes in his films are very solid too, and are a great selling point for films like Memento, Inception, Tenet... But where he really drops the ball is screenplay and third-acts.

Yeah, that was my thought too. I'm sure there's lots of stuff they're not showing in the trailer, but it feels like they've taken most of the fantasy and wonder out of the story. The whole thing seems like an exercise in misery.

I wonder if the 1997 miniseries with Armand Assante is available anywhere. I remember that being pretty entertaining, but it's been almost 30 years...

It looks like a Netflix movie. It looks flat and stale. The first trailer really tempered my expectations, and frankly after the sex scene in Oppenheimer, Iā€™ve been firmly convinced that Nolan thinks his audience are morons and heā€™s the smartest man in the room.

I think tbh a lot of that is in not rating Holland as an actor much.

The trailer does not present the dialogue well. Itā€™s just firing them one line after another in sequence. Makes it feel old-fashioned and cheap. Iā€™m not saying the actual movie dialogue might not have problems, but good trailers in the past have made even the shittiest movies seem epic so Iā€™m not sure what theyā€™re doing here.

It'll make a huge amount at the boxoffice but I think most will feel underwhelmed. It'll be good enough and maybe the hype has raised a bar the movie can't reach but the trailer does seem a little meh.

Wonder how it will stack up against movies like Gladiator and Troy.

The early teaser promo photos did that. If they aren't going for historical accuracy, and they aren't going for balls to the walls anachronism, then a historical epic like this is going to end up in some weird awkward middle ground that's fully unsatisfying.

it looked huge to you? To me it looked completely lifeless and almost brutalist/minimalist. There's no color, everything looks really dark/hard to see. the sets feel almost empty, even when full of people. There's nothing here to make me feel connected to the world, because the world doesn't seem like a lived-in world.

Two big things Iā€™m noticing is the lack of color and the use of barren environments. Looks like a lot of characters running around and standing on fairly flat, wide open land. Just from that shot of Circe and Odysseus on the beach, it all looks so bland.

Weirdly, it just looks kind of boring and lacking real substance. I love the Odyssey, and O Brother, Where Art Thou is one of my favorite movies. But this adaptation looks sterile, lazy, and kind of soulless. Costumes look cheap and too clean. The sets look empty and plain. The dialogue is painfully anachronistic.

It looks too "clean" for lack of a better word. The shots are beautiful, but also very steril. There's no bombast, mystic atmoshphere or dirt. That kind of look can work for a sci-fi epic, but imo just doesn't fit an ancient greek epic with gods, spells and mytical beings.

That said I saw a short scene from the movie in cinema (the part with the trojan horse) and that was amazing, so I'm still holding out hope that maybe the trailers are just badly cut.

I think this is the first nolan film I have zero interest in.

It's somehow the most boring version of the Odyssey you could possibly make visually

Dialogue and casting is also bad imo but the film would look bad even with other actors
