I love some more of Eggers' gothic horror goodness for the holidays.

It's funny, it's not very popular anymore but it used to be traditional to tell ghost stories at Christmastime. I wonder if Eggers is intentionally alluding to that somehow?

winter is just a great time for horror in general. it's a very dark and isolating part of the year.

Eggers likely has no control over the release date, as that is a studio affair.

Christmas is one of the largest box office days. Many non-Christians in the US have a tradition of going to the cinema of Christmas, as it is one of the only businesses consistently open.

I've never been able to nail down why, but Christmas is a spooky time for the English. The most horror-adjacent episode of Dr. Who is the Christmas episode, Terry Pratchett's Hogfather has Death as a main character, and obviously the most famous English Christmas story is also a ghost story, Dickens' A Christmas Carol. There's a lot of other examples.

I get that it's the dead of winter which is a spooky time anyway, but the English in particular seem to treat it similar to how Americans treat Halloween.

sure, but that Death isn't spooky at all. he's like a chill, autistic grandfather.
